STEM Girls encourages year 11 girls to network with like-minded girls, to continue their study of science and mathematics throughout their schooling and into university, and to pursue STEM career pathways.
Kim Giannoni has led the development and implementation of the Career Awareness Program (CAP) since it commenced in 2011. CAP is designed to enhance the compulsory year 10 SACE Personal Learning Plan (PLP) subject. The CAP engages with secondary school students to raise awareness and aspirations for higher education and is supported by University student mentors where possible.
Kim has worked in education, both secondary and tertiary, for the past 15 years. She is passionate about making a difference in the lives of secondary school and university students, in particular, their career aspirations. She enjoys empowering the students to believe in themselves and be the difference in their life and career choices.
Deb Turley is the Manager: UniSA Connect Programs. UniSA Connect focuses on inspiring science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) study and career awareness with secondary school students. The suite of enriching opportunities and experiential programs aims to promote educational attainment and enthuse students to pursue STEM study pathways at the University of South Australia. UniSA Connect utilises academic expertise to identify current and emerging Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ideas to develop interactive experiential programs. Scenario based problem solving is used as a key approach in the programs, with authentic learning links for secondary school students. UniSA Connect delivers programs at the Samsung SMARTSchool at Magill campus, Maths and Science Centre and other specialist laboratories at Mawson Lakes campus and regionally at Whyalla and Mount Gambier.
Commencing activity in 2011, with 6 school interactions involving 600 students, these numbers continued to build, and cumulatively to date, interactions with secondary schools are: 53,000 students, 3,300 schools and 5,000 teachers.
