Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Scales & Tales with a special 'Modal Modulation Workout' that will challenge your technique, your maneuverability across the strings/fretboard, your awareness and knowledge of scales/modes, and much more - so let's dive in!
This workout has been with me for a long time and I've shared it with a number of private lesson students over the years, so I figured it was finally time to share this challenging idea on the LNL channel to unleash one of my "secret workouts" for the viewers out there.
This idea revolves around a modal modulation shift occurring between F Aeolian and E Lydian. This modal/tonal shift creates an interesting/inspiring sound, and the workout itself is a huge challenge to your technique and ability, as we're incorporating legato, gradual frethand stretching, moving across the strings, moving along the fretboard, and much more as this workout unfolds, so if you're ready for a great exercise that will keep you on your fingertips and boost your technique while also supplying a treat for the ear - this is what you're looking for!
Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

The first modulation sounds so smooth because the 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th degrees of both scales are the same note. I haven't watched more than that yet myself, but keep an ear out for when and witch notes are the same from one to the next.

Cool… u just cleared out some clouds related to the ‘mixing/matching’ of modulating…! Thx! Had to add that after practicing/understanding/playing this aeolian/lydian exercise, i came upon playing to the 3rd and 5th intervals of each scale/mode… thx again for opening a door!

You've done it again David! I swear you are one of the best guitar teachers out there. I don't know that I can prove it, but I'm pretty sure that exercise is the background music for Final Fantasy X. While you played through it, all I could think was Final Fantasy X. Kinda cool to find out how game designers come up with the music to go with their games. Thanks man!

"Thunder Plains"! I heard the exact thing here too. That particular song starts with alternating C Major and minor chords. Melody churns between C Mixolydian and C Aeolian.

Hey what up man. Hope your weekend was good. These are some of my favorite lessons you do, can't wait to see what tricks and concepts you are going to show this week. The one from last week was really helpful I added the exercise of playing the key of c on the 5th fret of the G string to the octave on the 8th of the high E string. Very helpful. I'm going to show it to one of guitar players in my cover band, he just started playing a few years ago, definitely will help him with dexterity and moving around on the fret board. Thanks 🙏🙏 again your knowledge and lessons go way further than just this platform.

how interesting. I always thought modal chances would simply involve shifting over the scale's positions without key change. my theory ignorance hurts haha! there is definitely a soundtrack that comes to mind and does precisely this. quite eye opening to get to see the cogs of the clock on those techniques. top notch lesson as always \m/

Well, for that, they just arpeggiate the add2 major and minor chords. And I think the only modulation that happens in Prelude is towards the end when the key changes once.

David. It seems u can understand all guitar music. Try some of the licks of Ollie Halsall. No longer with us. A big influence on Allan Holdsworth. A perfect blend of jazz and rock. He was in a band called Patto. Give it all away is a standout solo.

Pretty cool lesson Dave. I'm assuming you dropped the 2 and 6 from the Lydian scale to make it "pentatonic", correct? It got me thinking on why this sounds harmonically viable even though the two scales aren't. Then I remembered that, at least according to Rameau in his 1722 Treatise In Harmony, any shape can move from one to another in half steps, whole steps, minor 3rds, major 3rds, etc., and as the pattern develops the pattern itself becomes the harmony even though the two voicings are not typically considered to be in harmony. So the motion of the two roots a half step apart, F to E and so on, creates the harmonic motion the ear will perceive as harmony. The potential here is endless of course. I'm going to try Bb Hirojoshi and A Hungarian minor and move them in a whole/half diminished pattern descending and ascending. Should be pretty weird.

F Aeolian and E lydian are not diatonic of course, so how did you arrive at the progression, if I may be so bold to ask? I'm trying to think of another modulation kinda based on the non diatonic "logic" behind F Aeolian to E Lydian. Sounds wicked though and that two note per for the Lydian... thats a handy idea. Superb lesson, thank you.
