What's the difference in meaning between "can" and "could" when we want to express ability? In requests, invitations, and suggestions, when do I use "can", "could", "will", or "would"?
@JeanietheEnglishTeacher4 жыл бұрын
In regards to ability, the answer is easy: 'can' is present and 'could' is past tense. For the others you mentioned, it would take a much longer explanation. Maybe I can make a video about that soon!

@@JeanietheEnglishTeacher Thanks God you replied. Actually I was not concerened about the content of the reply as much as I was concerened about your well being considering the Covid situation. Thank you for your reply anyway.

Hi, when I write "he ought to be home" or "she has to be riding her bike" then I am using a phrasal modal with "be" . But you said in your video that ought to and has to... Are phrasal modals without be? I am confused 🤔
@JeanietheEnglishTeacher3 жыл бұрын
The "Phrasal Modals with Be" use the 'be' verb IN the phrasal modal, in all cases at the beginning: be supposed to, etc. 'Ought to' does not include the 'be' verb, and neither does 'have to.' You gave examples of using the verb 'be' FOLLOWING the phrasal modal: ought to + be, has to + be. All phrasal modals can potentially be followed by the verb 'be'.

I'm sorry to hear that! I can see it quite clearly on youtube, so perhaps there is an issue on your computer. I'm not sure how to help!

Hi teacher jeanie, could you recomend me any book or website where i can find all this phrasal modals with their rules and uses. please.
@JeanietheEnglishTeacher3 жыл бұрын
I don't have a strong opinion about this, but I do like the Azar Grammar series, published by Pearson Longman. The highest-level book, "Understanding and Using English Grammar," does a good job of explaining modals and phrasal modals.
