Good luck finding a cheap X58 board. Even the cheapest ones (not counting chinese ones) cost more used than my B350 AM4 board cost new. CPUs to suit on the other hand can be found cheap.

I've done this mod many times and have several rigs running still. I completely recommend just cutting the plastic pieces off the motherboard socket. So much easier. Just take an exacto blade and push straight down takes 2 seconds and you don't have to worry about accidentally screwing up the processor. Regardless though this is a great mod and great computer when matched with a decent video card.

I had an older Core 2 duo celron based machine that the specs stated that is it was compatible with a "newer" Core 2 Quad and so I purchased the Core 2 Quad. I updated the bios and installed the "new" processor and it would not post. Just beeped. I put the older processor back in, I used the guide at the delided.com site and updated the bios with the newer microcode and reinstalled the "newer Core 2 quad now the Core 2 Quad is running like a champ! This was a great video and a great subject to touch on. I'm glad you were able to put it up. I was super happy with my conversion, though I'm running it on my old Maximus Formula, and that X38 chipset limits my options for CPUs, or at least from what I've read. It runs the 3xxx series processors, but not the 5xxx series. Kind of a bummer, but still much better than coughing up 200 bucks for an old QX that you have no idea what it's been doing for the last 10 years. lol.

I have done this mod for one person who had very little money. He had Phenom X4 with 4GB of ram and wanted to play GTA5 on it... LOL =) He also bought 4GB stick which was useless for him because he did mistake and got DDR3 variety. At work I used LGA775 board with 4GB DDR3 in one stick with some Pentium Dual-Core so we agreed to do an exchange. I bought very cheap 4 core 3GHz Xenon and did the mod to the board and got his Phenom board with him paying some small amount of money, just enough to cover price of processor. He got vastly better performance with 45nm C2Q running at 3GHz compared to old Phenom 1 at 2GHz. On my side performance didn't really improve much if at all... but I got more cores and most importantly chance to use original Phenom :))))))))))))

When I did mine, I cut the notches out of the CPU socket which was actually pretty easy. You can set a CPU you don't care about into the socket while you cut the notches. I will have to try modding the BIOS like you showed since the BIOS I used only supports socket 771 CPUs.

HEY ! That's my favorite LA 771 CPU. Cheap and efficient and runs like a Q9650. Build two gamer PC's already and awaiting one more CPU in the mail. Only issue is they are not compatible in a X38/X48. But the P35/P45 is still very good. Also works fine on P31/P41/P43. Actually this chip can work in a nForce 780i very good, and *okay in a nForce 680i (*keep the chipset cooled down - the Quad FSB1333 is a big challenge for this old HOT 680 chipset). (Celeron's as practice CPU's.. haha.. I like that - and agree):) Good video Phil. Like the microcode update toturial. Thumbs up!

As with most of these X54** CPU in 775 socket videos, there is no mention of installing better cooling. Going from a 65w CPU to a 120w CPU can create issues if the stock cooler is used. In addition to that, finding an adequate cooler may be difficult depending on clearances and case size. I'm not saying this is a bad mod, only saying that there is a significant final step left out of almost all of these 771 to 775 mod videos.

Few months back I found the L5420 for about 12 USD to be really good buy. I took 2 of them for my parent's computers, modded the BIOSes (both were gigabytes boards, but one with G41 and DDR3 and the other is P35 with DDR2) and they work flawlessly. Since the L5420 has TDP of only 50W, it is practically cold and with 8GB RAM and cheap SATA3 SSD, their PCs are still up to the usual tasks and pretty usable nowadays.

As I mentioned in your other video, I did this in my laptop (Clevo D901C). The performance is awesome, but even more the power consumption/TDP are usually FAR superior from a measurement perspective of the consumer variants. Perhaps they’re higher binned silicon in general. Awesome video!

I cut the board slot doing mine. I was fine, but I made sure to use a brand new razor blade. My friend who told me about the mod however, he used an old one when he did his and ended up actually bending some pins and had to really carefully bend them back again. So if you do cut the board tabs, make sure to use a sharp/brand new blade and be careful about the pins.

I did mod my e6400 back in the day to 1333 FSB, for a grand total of 2.66 ghz. 25% more powerful CPU for next to no work. But in the case of Xeon, I would pay someone that way I am not burning up chips. I had a Pentium e5500 I almost damaged pin modding. It was a next to free CPU, but thats not the point. Neat video, as always.

This video was watched on my LGA771 modded system. When I did this mod 4 years ago, pre-modded chips didn't start showing up on ebay until about the time I was finished with playing around with the mod a few months later, mostly then it was pre-stickered chips. With proper cooling, voltage tweaks that 5450 will top out at about 4.5Ghz, but stability wise 4.2 - 4.3 is where it should land. I was more worried about filing too much of the CPU away ( E5450 cost a little more then that now ) so I modded the sockets instead.
@blakecasimir

Indeed, some precise cutting of the plastic stubs in the socket with a small razor blade could be a lot easier than filing the CPU.

This is a cool mod.. I remember seeing it mentioned/covered years ago. Seems like a good use of existing hardware. The closest I can come to this performance for the price on US ebay for a mobo/cpu combo is a Gigabyte mobo with an AMD Athlon II X4 620 for $50 shipped- which isn't a powerhouse, but can be OC'd easily iirc. But add in ram and HDD and Power Supply and Windows... Just shows buying complete used desktops are a better value that used parts to build with.

My system already has an SSD and I recently upgraded from 4GB ram to 8GB, so it will still be a quite decent system for a while (at least for webbrowsing, playing videos, simple office tasks). I'll probably use it until Windows stops supporting it.

Any workarounds you know of to get to work on the Q45 boards? I'm reading into for my HP Compaq 8000 Elite Small Form Factor AU247AV mobo.

Nope. Just tried. DC8000 786G7 mobo. reverted to W7 to put 1.4 BIOS on but it doesn't recognize X5450 and don't think the BIOS can be tweaked. Someone send me a microcode link if you have one please!?

HI, I have a issue with a Xeon i just installed on older ASUS P5QL SE MB which has quads in its specifications so can handle 4 cores. Windows 7 installed, socket 775 Put a modified Xeon in and its stable and working ok at about the same speed as my old core 2 Duo but CPU-Z ect is only showing 2 cores and 2 threads?. I went into Msconfig and advanced/boot and only 1,2 cores are there to change; shouldnt 1-4 be available? I have original BIOS and also if this makes a diff the bios is set to IDE not ACHI but i tried changing it to ACHI and it wouldnt boot so put it back to IDE and its fine and working. Would that setting need to be changed or is it only for security ect eventhough ACHI is more up to date?. would i have to have loaded windows fresh set to Achi to use ACHI? and do i need to worry as the computer is Win 7 anyway? So do the settings in BIOS make any diff to 4 cores being seen? Thanks for any assistance you can give Tim

would q9650 work on a modified motherboard for the xeon e5420, or motherboard must be restored to the old version of the bios to accept q9650 again?

The 9650 should work with the modded BIOS!

Thanks for the demonstration. How to download award bios from motherboard to do this mod? I don't have the bios update for the motherboard anywhere as its a unknown brand but I have the award flasher awdflash with me. I also have CBROM v1.95. tool. Can it make a backup of bios from motherboard as a bin file?

It seems that this processor mod is not supported by G31 motherboards with Q35 and some other graphics chipsets. It was the reason for the processor to not boot. The procedure seemed to work with latest xeon micro codes added to the bios file. Viewers may try asus or gigabyte motherboards which are supposed to work. There is a long list of graphic or board chipsets which don't work with some lga 771 xeons so buyers beware of those chipsets when doing this mod.

Good Video Phil! Meanwhile we can call you Xeon Butcher :P :P..nahh...This gigabyte mobo does no go past 400-410 fsb so the E0 80W needs a better mobo, maybe in a future video!!

If that Gigabyte motherboard tries to recover from the backup BIOS, perhaps the backup chip needs to flashed as well to version F8. Although I wouldn't recommend it if you still harbor doubts about that particular BIOS version.

I think removing those plastic pieces from the socket it's safer and quicker then creating the 2 notches on the cpu, plus you only have to do it once, after that u can insert any 771 cpu in the socket, after aplying the sticker 2 it ofc.

Just saw your video on my recommended list of videos. I think your easy way of doing such videos is a nice alternation. By the way, are you a native German speaker? Because I can hear a familiar accent :P
