Thank you for this excellent video. I could not get Chimp working in my Crystal Xbox so I used the tool to replace my 8GB HD with a spare 320 GB HD using the USB tool. Apart from an issue where it took a long time trying to create the partition which I resolved by cancelling and trying again it was painless. My Xbox is happily upgraded and working as the old HD seemed like it was on the way out. Thanks once again for the great video.

i was able to do the 3rd option once but now whenever i try to select primary ide master and lock the drive it says drive not found. when i select secondary ide master i can select stage 2 and stage 2 will recognize the drive on hda and i am able to install the files however when i try to lock the drive on hdc it says the drive is frozen and to disable automatic detection however my pc bios has no such option and my motherboard only has 1 ide connector on it

I get to the part where it says "partition 0 start... partition 6 start" (5:56) and then it just hangs forever. Never says [OK] and continues. I've left it for hours twice now. How long should the process take? Maybe my IDE to usb2 adapter is too old? I can't seem to troubleshoot it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm using XboxHDM 23 USB, to get a blank 2TB hdd ready. I've got my EEPROM.bin in the directory, and I've copied over my premodded and nulled C contents via FTP, to the xboxhdm23usb folder. Drive is detected.... Not Frozen, and its unlocked... Step 1, set up from scratch.... Seems to be taking FOREVER... Right here: 5:48 So I left it overnight, and it had some error which I should have screenshotted... JP103-5 PATA IDE TO SATA.... Hard drive is a... ST2000DM008 Set to Master.... Not sure what else I've missed? Any advice on what to check? Thanks EDIT: I see my error in your video! its at 19:48. I will try the Nuke option as advised! ....Although, I currently cannot boot up my xbox, because I messed up some files via the ftp on the stock 8gb, but I saved my C before making those changes... So I'm trying to get this 2TB to be my replacement drive. Is there a similar kind of wipe option available, that I can do from a windows 10 pc with my USB IDE To SATA setup. Ps. I have a mac available, and an old pc with IDE.

Thanks for all of the great tutorials. I'm trying out the ide/usb method with a 1tb sata WD drive w/ a startech ide -> sata adapter on it, but its been on the "Building partitions part" for over an hour now. Is this normal because of the size of the HDD im using or did something go wrong?

I believe it is normal, I typically only ever rebuild using the stock hard drive but I would probably leave it overnight to see if it finishes.

Good evening, what I did to achieve the softmod in my original xbox, was the usb method, only that with the original hard disk of the console, without the blocking step since it is blocked for the console, with that I achieved modify it without having another xbox or original game of it, what if I tried was to put a different dash but I did not get it, so I only changed the config.xml of the unleashx for one with the language in Spanish and it was excellent, thanks for so good material for this fantastic console, excuse the google translator.

disk management is telling me to "initialise a disk before Logical disk drive manager can access it" it gives me the option MBR OR GPT , and it says select disk 8 to be initialise. on the xbox hdm it comes up with 3 different usb device ones which one would be the xbox? none of them look like the one in the video

I really, really wish I ran into this earlier today. I had trouble finding a suitable guide for a USB bootable drive, and I had to go through trial and error and ended up installing an old softmod (thanks /r/originalxbox wiki). It's all good now! Upgraded and everything, just need a new HDD.

@@techhoarder3010 Your method doesn't seem to be working for me, I decided to try it on another HDD and the C:\ has the instal~ thing you mentioned. Using another set of C:\ files obtained elsewhere booted me into UnleashX and from there, I used Rocky5's softmod upgrade kit and the tool took it from there. What's causing the aforementioned issue?

Thanks for the guide, I was wondering if there is any way to back up the files that are already saved on the xbox beforehand then boot them through XHDM. I'm relatively new to modding and I'm trying to repair my old modded xbox that has error 16.

Not 100% sure what you mean. If you are asking about your game saves then yes, they are located on your E drive. You can copy them to your E folder in xboxhdm and they will get copied when you build a new disk. You could back up your C drive also and do the same thing but I believe depending on the kernel of your xbox, those files may not work with every xbox. That's why it's better to use xboxhdm files from Rocky5 as they are compatible with every xbox.

I had a lot of problems with chimp because of a bad disk drive and not having a first party controller I'm pretty sure I can do this but should i? I even have my own eeprom file

I would build a new disk with xboxhdm and lock it. Then you know for sure you are building the disk properly as compared to cloning a bad disk.

No you don't need the eeprom for a hard modded xbox. You can build the new disk and skip the part about locking it.

Hey, so that “Launch Xboxhdm” option isn’t working. It’s not booting up that “Qemu” window as you would usually see it in the video. Any solutions?

What OS are you running? You may need to check your bios and make sure Virtualization is enabled. Might say VT-X or something like that.

Windows 7 for the laptop, Win10 for the main machine. Trying to use the laptop, but I can use the main machine if you recommend it. And where would that option be?

Yeah use Windows 10, Every bios is different so its hard to say where the VT-X would be. Typically you don't have to set it but I would try your W10 Machine and see if that works.

i spend 4 days every day every night.. cant find a way to fix my xbox..i replaced dashboard and now it doesnt boot it stucks on xbox logo..i try to find a way to read the drive on pc..i even have the eeprom..i have 1 usb to sata adapter and sata hdd usb case but both of them dont recognize the hard drive( i can see it on hdd managment of windows) now i ordered other adaptors from amazon to try...really dont know what to do..i just need to find a way to rebuild my drive or add the missing files on it..i even hot swap it on the dvd cable of another working modded xbox but didnt help.i cant see the files

Yes, but you will need a usb to ide adapter to fix it.

I have Unitek IDE to USB adapter and I have no luck in the XboxHDM program. The Hard drive shows up in Disk Management but not the program. I have check the HDD and it is one of the capable HD on the website. Western Digital 1TB

Does your stock hdd work? If so you should use chimp to clone it rather than xboxhdm for building a new disk. Xboxhdm is very picky on disks that are larger than a few hundred gigs.

Oh okay, Something is wrong with the dashboard files on the hard drive, If you have xboxhdm setup, you can run the command xbrowser when starting up xboxhdm or select the option to view hard drive files. Delete everything on the C drive and copy the files from the C folder in xboxhdm to your C partition on your hard drive. Lock it back up and it should be good to go.

Tech Hoarder how would I get the hard drive to read on my computer, i have this IDE to usb (unitech) i plug the hard drive in computer seems to read it. But i cant access it , wont show as connected hard drive in XboxHDM. Do you have a tutorial on this matter by chance? I have the eeprom.bin as well but wont let me access it. Something with the files on the C drive is missing. Reconnect it to xboxhdm when it launches, type the command xbrowser. This should give you a list of what is on the hard drive, open the C partition. At this point I would delete everything from C and copy the xboxhdm files back using the copy command in xbrowser. Did you use the files from the xbhdm folder on rocky5s softmod?

Yeah, you don't need anything on E. Error 13 is an issue with the dash, so something on C isn't right. I would recommend you download rocky5 softmod installer variants xbhdm files version 1.1.8. Try those files for your build.

usb version has a dead link but i found it here if you don't mind grub: netix.dl.sourceforge.net/project/zenglox/zenglOX_v1.0.0/grubinst-1.1-bin-w32-2008-01-01.zip hdm: sourceforge.net/projects/xboxhdm2/files/latest/download edit: i used rufus to install grub to my usb since grub installer resulted in a missing mbr helper error. to fix this i enebled the advanced options section in rufus and chose the grub 2.6 option. hope this helps somebody

I'm following this excellent tutorial. How long to build a 320gb hdd from scratch? I think mine it's stuck before the part to format partitions. Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table, it shows the partitions 0 to 6 and the sizes. Is it stuck or does it take a long time to finish the process? it's been an hour, the cursor is still blinking.

Xboxhdm isn't the greatest with larger hard drives, it will stall often if the drive is too big. if you can, use a stock hard drive to get your xbox going, then use chimp to clone your stock hdd to the larger drive for softmodded xboxes. Hard modded xboxes with a good dvd drive you can use hexen 2020 to build a new disk.

If the eeprom has been nulled in the xbox the hard drive is going into, is there any reason not to use the eeprom.bin file that was included in the download?

I’m assuming this method can be used even if your original hard drive is still working? I want to install a new SATA drive in my soft modded Xbox without hot swapping the dvd drive to the new SATA drive. Would this be a good scenario to use one of these methods?

You can, but depending on the size of the hdd, it may take quite a long time to format the partitions. Your best bet on a softmodded xbox is to use Chimp. But give xboxhdm a shot and see if it works for you.

Tech Hoarder is there any real danger in hot swapping from the dvd drive?

As long as you don't create any shorts, everything should be fine, Don't touch the power supply while it is plugged in, Just a few weeks ago I accidentally touched it and got zapped. Blew me back a few feet but I was fine. There is a piece of metal that sticks up from the power supply that has a yellow lighting bolt on it. While picking up an ide cable I accidentally made contact with it. Makes you respect the equipment a little bit more. I would say just be careful with how you connect it to the sata to ide adapter. I believe that adapter is slightly fragile, Use electrical tape on the hard drive side and verify none of the pins are making contact to anything metal. Best of luck.

I have tried 3 different HDD. They are compatible. I keep getting the error when checking status of HDD. Unknown error. I am getting error 6 and can't get my eprom from my HDD. Anything I can try. I did try the BIOS method and it didn't work.

Are you using a stock drive or upgraded drive? Some upgraded hard drives can not be locked.

Error 13 would mean something is wrong with the files on the hdd. Don't format it in disk management. It's good that you see the disk in there but you should use xboxhdm to format it.

Download the tool hddguru low level format. That should fix your issue. Then you can rerun xboxhdm to build the disk. Do you have the eeprom backed up? Or is the xbox hard modded?

After having error 13, I tried to rerun xboxhdm to fix it but it is giving me "invalid argument" when when building partitions C and E. That's my reason why I actually am looking for a way to wipe the whole HDD so that I can restart the while process from scratch

@@techhoarder3010 Hey bud, using the IDE USB method I realized the wire that supplies power to the IDE adapter is too short. Would I just be able to program the drive without the IDE adapter and then put the IDE adapter on when installing it into the original Xbox? Hope that makes sense.

It will, but if your dvd drive works, you can build a new hard drive using hexen 2019 or newer. If the dvd drive doesn't work, you can use xboxhdm to build the disk and you don't need to lock it.

@@techhoarder3010 My dvd drive doesn't work, so I went ahead and used xboxhdm as per your tutorial. The process was succesful but when I put the hdd in the console, it shows the boot sequence and after that i get a blackscreen, with the light around the eject button flashing with the red-orange-green colors. I tried 2 different hard drives built with xboxhdm, one locked one unlocked and the result is the same. Any idea what went wrong?

Yes, did you use the xboxhdm files from my download? If so those won't work for an xbox that has been tsoped, only for unmodded or softmodded, I have a disk with the appropriate files for a hardmod, If you can't find them online, let me know and I'll upload them.

If the hdd is locked to a nulled eeprom than yes, otherwise you can unlock the hdd with a computer or another xbox then relock it with your current xbox's eeprom.
