Mode Door Replacement 03-08 Ram - the RIGHT (and easy) way!

Detailed video on how to fix the mode doors on the Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500's. A common problem in these trucks is for the mode to be stuck on vent. This is due to a broken door inside the HVAC. There are many videos showing people cutting holes and bending metal brackets to access and replace the mode door(s), but TRUST ME, the way I am going to show you is FAR easier, and it is the RIGHT way to do it, with no cutting. It will probably take about 2 hours to do it, if you have a helper and the proper tools.
Also, in the end I show how to adjust the shifter linkage if it will not go fully into park. Sometimes it won't light up any lights, other times it thinks that it is in reverse, even though the shifter is in park. Skip to the end if you would like to see that.
Special thanks to my uncle Jerry, who helped create this video!
The replacement doors used in this video can be found here:

I believe this covers 2003 through 2008 Ram 1500's and 2004 through 2009 Ram 2500 and 3500's without dual-zone climate control. My years could be slightly off, but I know that I have done them in 2003, 2004's, and 2005's.

Thanks for the video. This helped a lot. I did this in 3500 with manual transmission and did NOT pull the steering wheel completely off. I removed the brackets and unplugged the connectors on the steering wheel and let it drop down. I did not remove the coupler. There was enough room to drop the wheel column down with the seat slid all the way back. The truck has the manual bench seat with the center console for the stick shift

Thanks for the step by step instruction. I was able to do this by myself. Did this over five nights, hour each night, less frustration for me. Mine was 2004.5 2500 Cummins and the top mode door was broken. Can't believe Dodge has not recalled this crap. Mine failed in no defrost mode. Only deviaton to excellent video was to not completly take out the dash. Moved the dash on to front seats over moving pad, then slid partially out the passenger side. Also check the rubber boot for the steering shaft when you reinstall steering wheel. Mine got crumpled and partially came off on the other side of the firewall. Thanks again for most helpful video.

Thank you so much for this video. I have to do a heater core in the near future and will do the doors also which i know some are broken. i am an amateur shade tree guy that is retired now but this gives me confidence to do it myself. i have a great mechanic but he charges everything by the book and upcharges parts to boot. I will attempt this myself soon but will leave the steering wheel and lay back the dash but you guys did a very professional video. Thanks

I used this video and it worked perfectly! Glad I did, because there are 4 doors and 4 actuators. If I would have cut a hole behind the glove box I wouldn’t have accomplished anything but making a hole. The dash removal gave me access to the entire unit. I was able to test and TS all doors and actuators and resolve the issue. It really wasn’t that bad removing the dash and it went back in even quicker. Thanks for the great video!

Great video. Got all five of my HVAC doors replaced using this method, although it would have been easier for me to pull the entire HVAC box to replace all five. If you’re missing floor heat and plan to only replace that mode door, this video is hands down the technique to use. Pulling the dash ended up being very straightforward after taking some notes from this guy!

That’s normally what you would do you only want to do the job once so while your in there you replace ALL the doors and replace the heater core wether they need them or not you don’t want to get it all back together just to take it all back apart to do something else and I don’t recommend replacing it but at least flush the evaporator too and MAKE FOR DAMN SURE you get ALL the doors AND SPEND THE 300 TO GET THE GOOD STEEL DOORS don’t even screw around with ANY others they are junk too

@@natticus_prime yeah do it right I’ve found that cutting the box actually takes more time and more of a pain in the backside, and to mention that the tape they give you to cover the box back up doesn’t last that long in a automotive environment, cutting the box I assure you will cause issues in the future and sometimes to rectify the issue you have to do the job all over again

The only thing I would say is; if you're mode doors are in need of replacement, and you're going that far with it, you might as well pull the HVAC box and replace your heater core, at a minimum, if not the evap core as well. It's a lot of work just to get to the box, and with it out of the truck you have much easier access to everything. Plus... you don't have to pull the steering column to get the box out. Just drop it in the seat, pull the dash out and rest it on the column. The passenger side will pull out and rest in the seat. You have plenty of room to get the whole box out from there. It would really suck to get all that done and have coolant puking on your carpet a few months later. If I had known about the mode door issues when I replaced my cores, I'd have put new stuff in then. As it is... I'm going back in to do the doors now... Great job with the video! You can get in over your head very quickly pulling a dashboard. With a video like this, you can get yourself straight easily. Thanks for a great job!!!
@cmcken1
@cmcken1 5 жыл бұрын
Yup. I gutted my dash, down to the frame, redoing the whole thing down to the closed cell foam. Once you've gotten this far, yank the entire HAA or HAD box out, open the entire thing in half, R&R the cores, all doors, and all servo (some call them actuators) should be replaced. Blend Door USA sold me a super nice kit made from solid Al complete with the correct PU foam. You just have to ensure the use of OEM Mopar servos which can be had at Mopar Giants dot com. Well worth the money to avoid hearing clicking after she's all back together and ya find out the aftermarket servos don't apply the same force as OEM due to engineering employed a work-around for those broken shafts by reducing the force applied. OEM actuators and servos apply more force and work with the solid Al doors without issue.

You've done all the checks that I would have done. If the hoses going to the core are hot, then your problem is definitely in the HVAC unit. Did you check the actuators? I have a 2014 1500--is the proceedure basically the same ? The heater fan works fine, I get only cold air. I have removed the glove box and found the blend door is stiff to move, but though the actuator motor does not turn, the door does move by flipping the white plastic tab with a screw driver, and then it gives 'some' heat---what causes this stiffnes and why do I not get full heat? Both the heater core feed tube and the return tube in the engine well get hot to the touch, so i'm thinking the blend doors have issues? Comments please.

I'm not sure if this will be the same. Ram switched the 1500 to the 4th gen in 2009 so they could be different. The doors in this truck weren't stiff - just broken inside. Maybe you have some leaves or debris inside?

Hi, K Jack. Unfortunately I don't have the original recordings anymore so I can't send you the normal speed of that process. I can tell you that the screws holding the HVAC together are in pretty obvious locations, and there was at least one small bolt holding it to the firewall that we took out too. Once you get in there and start splitting it, you can feel where the resistance is and look for a screw that way. HOWEVER, since you have so many broken doors, I don't think you can do them all with the clam shell method. I honestly believe you would really be better off pulling the entire HVAC out so you can split it on a bench. Once you get the dash out of the way it really isn't hard to get the HVAC out of the way. The AC lines are held onto the evaporator by a bolt at the expansion valve (easy to remove - have your AC system evacuated first), and the two heater core connections are usually spring clamps. I find the heater core lines the most difficult to remove. Squeeze the clamp and get it out of the way, then turn the hoses back and forth with some good pliers to "break" their seal that happens over time so you can pull them off. Once those are disconnected there are a few more nuts on the engine side of the firewall holding the entire HVAC in place. I have had to pull the HVAC from a couple trucks for the evaporator and removing the dash takes the most time. While you have it open, take a good look at your evaporator and heater core. They are relatively inexpensive parts so if they look anything but new it would be a good idea to replace them as well since you are already in there. Best of luck to you. Sorry to hear that all of four of your doors are broken!

On my 03 3500 if the ac is cold on drivers but only cool or warm on pass is because Freon is low. Supposedly the engineers route the air to the driver side first then from there go to the pass. I added Freon and both sides were even as far as temp but in your situation it is reversed with heat I dunno. At least check your Freon lvl and go from there.

I can adjust temp control and it's always hit and miss or a mixture (hot blows cool, cold blows warm or mix of both. In my experience, the "control modules" don't really go bad. It's almost always broken doors. Watch the part of the video where I show what each door does and see if that lines up with your particular failures. It is likely that all of your doors have failed though.

2002 1500? Yes. 2002 2500 or 3500, no. I could be wrong but it sounds like you may have a bad/plugged heater core or low coolant. Low coolant is easy, but if it's a bad heater core you'll pretty much follow this video to get the dash out, but then you'll need to remove the entire HVAC system (disconnect coolant and A/C lines under hood and remove nuts on the engine side of the firewall).

Hi, James. The blend door is separate from the mode doors that I replace in this video. If you freeze the video at 27:14, you can see a 3rd actuator in the middle of the HVAC right up front towards the top (near that old barcode sticker). That runs the blend door, which is what you're looking for. I don't recall exactly, but you might be able to reach in and check that door through the opening at the top of the HVAC unit where I'm taking out one of the mode doors. I suppose that it is possible to have some sort of blockage or broken door, but I can't say that I have ever seen that before. Hopefully this helps. Good luck!

K M I’m not a mechanic but it does sound like a heater core could be the problem. The mode door one controls vent or defrost and when it’s on defrost the door will open and send the air to mode door 2 which then controls whether it’s on the dash or floor. Is your heat hot when you have it on both the floor and dash at the same time?

If I took this job to the dealership, how much does this fix typically cost?
@3DayWeekend
@3DayWeekend 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, James. A dealership is likely going to follow the book and will take the entire HVAC system out of truck. This would require them to evacuate and recharge the A/C system, and they will need to drain some of the coolant and refill. From quick searches, this would probably be a 6-7 hour job by the book, and I wouldn't be surprised if the dealership charges $100 per hour. I would also speculate that the parts would cost twice as much from the dealership as they would in my link. All in all, I wouldn't think it would be out of line to expect somewhere around $1000 for a dealership to do this job.
