Hi, I have a Tesla model Y, and it's only 4 months old. When we picked the car up, we had a 445km available range. After the first few charges, we settled at 435km range. Recently, the range has dropped to 426km. Would you think this is normal? Cheers
@LudicrousFeed10 ай бұрын
Li Ion batteries are known to settle down after a few weeks ... Leave it a bit longer and you can do another BMS calibration at the 6 month mark (drain to almost 0% and recharge to 100% Repeat again to gain more accuracy) then check again.

How do you get ‘service mode’ with a later yr software? This service mode she be accessible to a Teslas, considering support is very vague w/battery.

On scan my tesla for 2019 SR+ reported battery capacity when new is 52.6 kWh. I started using scan my tesla a couple of weeks after I got the car and it reported Actual battery Capacity as very close to this 52.4 kWh. After 3.5 years and 90,000 km reported capacity is 46.9 kWh = 89% remaining. However, EV Database reports actual usable capacity as 49 kWh when new. My degredation is then only 95% remaining.

Great video Tom. 9% degradation for 3.5 years seems high to me. What is the % limit for battery warranty?
@LudicrousFeed Жыл бұрын
It plateaus at the 10% mark from charts available online. Tesla warrants battery degradation up to 30%

After calibrating by discharging and charging a couple of times, is it fair to say the Service Mode and Scan my Tesla Results pretty much correspond with the degradation as calculated buy looking at the fully charged estimated range on the dash/app versus the fully charged estimated range on the dash/app when new?
@LudicrousFeed Жыл бұрын
Good question ... it's a complicated matter because the range when new is often inflated because after a few cycles, the battery pack will settle into its 'rated range' and the capacity will contract. Apparently all Li-ion batteries do this. Hence why many new owners always remark on their range 'dropping' after a few weeks of driving - this is just the cells settling into their new normal. So yes, you can use the the range to do your own informal comparisons but I would be using the new 'settled' range after a few weeks rather than the number when the car is Day 0. Hence why I don't use the 'When new' number of 77kWh from the SMT app graphic and instead use 74kWh because that's the rated capacity. Hope that makes sense. I'll keep reiterating this as I do more videos
@henvan8737 Жыл бұрын
Tom the heat generation would be due to a battery with much higher than your 5% needing to wash off the battery capacity in the form of heat being generated through the stationary motors used as dummy loads.

Understood but if I hadn’t intervened I wonder if it would’ve discharged to 0% by itself? It seemed to be idle for a long time

Hi, Ludicrous, thanks for your time and it is very helpful video. I got 2019 3P same as yours. The sales guy recommended always charge until 90% and it shows 400km for the range of it. How about yours? Mine one is 51k on odometer

Yup Range loss is real unfortunately. Constant obsession about charging is an overstatement I think - most of us plug in at night if needed and then get on with life
