I got a well loved model 37 last year as my first J Frame. I love it, but the maintenance to keep it alive is a little tedious. I'm still on the fence between the 640 and the 340pd. I think the stainless guns really show a manufacturers true ability. They can't just throw anodizing or coatings on it to cover up machining flaws. It has to be perfect, just like blued guns of the past.

This thing kicks like a mule with 357 magnum rounds. I had to shoot about 34 rounds (17 with each hand) during a firearms training class. That was two weeks ago, and my hands are still sore. Even ruptured a blood vessel. No fun. Makes a lot more sense to carry it with .380. You don't need to put a hole in your target and the next 3 people behind him.

I love guns as defense tools and target shooting as a hobby. I love revolvers too. I especially love some of S&W's guns. But I need someone to answer this for me honestly: why on God's creation would I want an 11oz gun that shoots .357 magnum? Yes, you can shoot .38 out of it, but you can get a light weight .38 for less than half the price of this thing. Nobody shoots .357 out of these things. It isn't a selling point. I'm a 6'2" 240 pound man that can soak up recoil fairly well. But I don't see a point to this. I have a full stainless J-frame in .357 that is still pretty spicy. Magnum out of these ultralights is like using a pocket knife to scratch your balls. Sure, you can do it, but why?

All J frames became .357 sized for economy of scale reasons in the 90s. The frames and cylinders of the ".38 only" guns can dimensionally accommodate .357, although they're not chambered for it. It's marketing. If you give the customer more options on paper, especially a pedigree cartridge like .357mag, they're more likely to pony up for the 340/60/640 over the 642 that does the same thing for $200 less.

However.. A lot of guys really do trust their lives to .357 (and not 38spl). In a critical life or death situation I think they would trade a couple days of intense wrist and hand pain for not dying. That's a compromise they're willing to make.

@@onseki1774 I love .357, the issue isn't really pain. The massive recoil makes accuracy and control much more difficult. Magnum rounds, while more powerful even out of that 1.88 inch barrel, are only marginally so. .357 benefits greatly from a longer barrel. So, you really aren't getting much advantage for that huge recoil.

This is yet another of countless 5 shot J frames - it's too light in my view for reasonable 357 use and in my opinion, too painful to even practice and zero various ammo. I think what you ought to do is answer the Kimber K6XS and slightly "upsize" the J cylinder on a cost effective high strength aluminum frame and make a 6 shot concealed hammer 38+P and even better yet also offer a 7 shot 32 H&R. Also, use the very likable 43C/351C style and sights as a foundation and style guide - just don't use an aluminum cylinder for center fire calibers!
