Knowledge is power! As with anything unknown it seems a mystery until someone comes along and explains the simplicity. Thanks! Now I can take down my 99.

Awesome, been looking at father-in-law's collection to clean, and couldn't figure out why this takedown model looked different than everything else I was finding online. Didn't want to unscrew the unique piece on the forend without knowing what it was or if it was necessary to clean the rifle, and now I know what it is and how it functions. Many thanks.

I used to have one of these in 303 savage. I also had the .410 barrel as well. The barrells change out rather quickly. That is reasoning behind the barrel coming out that easily. Most never bought or have long lost the 410 shotgun barrel.
@CJs_DIY5 жыл бұрын
I wonder if you could get a 410 barrel made for one of these rifles
@joes.45608 жыл бұрын
I just purchased a 99 Take down like those you have. Manufacture date is 1911, based on the serial number. I found that it only takes a quarter turn and the threads line up with gap-groves to lift the barrel out easily. A pin in the fore stock locks the barrel when reinstalled. What a neat rifle! Engineering is just right.
@chrisblake19185 жыл бұрын
Mine corresponds to 1918/19. I wish it had that quarter turn!

my father loved the 99 and before he died; I gave him the original 1899 made for this cartridge. Checkered trigger, perch belly stock, tang sight and takedown.

I’ve got one of those that came to me from my mother’s uncle when he passed in 1950. It came chambered in 250-3000 and has the quarter twist take down which is a little sloppy, I’ve never sighted it to see how this affects accuracy.

Back then in Quebec they were popular for Moose in 300and for deer in 22hp because it was easy to carry in the woods and the rifle is easy to protect against snow with one hand

@ Gordan Grimes thx for the info... as you can see the rifle is in need of repair... its actually not mine its my cousins he just left it at my house for awhile. I would love to have a takedown model 99 it would be even cooler to have the 410 barrel with it.

These things should be easy to take apart. The main reason they get difficult (the for-end included) is rust or old age. People do not take these apart or don't know so they let them sit and corrosion sets in. I have one in great condition which is carefully maintained and I can take it apart with minimal effort. I use a very small amount of Remoil on the release and a bit of high tech teflon grease on the barrel threads the key is to prevent corrosion/rust and minimal oil so you don't damage the fore-end. The take down was a give from my step dad well cared for but I don't think he was aware of that feature. I was able to remove and had to have a friend with a plastic jawed vice remove the barrel. It took me several days of brushing with a tooth brush and cleaning oil to get the corrosion out of the receiver threads without messing up the bluing or marking up the receiver. I'd need a couple pages too detail all the work. Once it's correct snug tension is all you should need. Thanks for the video (mine is .300 savage by the way.)

yes the take down version of the model 99 is far more rare than other like models. The non take down models were widely used in prison guard towers until sportsmen realized its potential as a light weight yet dependable rifle. Just slightly smaller than a 30-30 the 250-3000 packs just as much punch. The take down should not require any tools other then your hands. savage arms built this product to operate smoothly Do not use parts of the gun itself to remove other parts

@Roachmanster I wouldn't sell that rifle but if you are selling it let me know how much. Is it a model 99? It will definitely be worth more if its the takedown. They produced those rifles for 99 years so it depends on when yours was originally made the 250 3000 came out in 1915 (I think) so It could be pretty old. That being said there are a lot of those rifles around making them pretty common. What type of metal is your rotary magazine made out of?
