That came apart pretty nice. Working on old cars is always fun but can be TOTALLY frustrating sometimes when things simply REFUSE to dis-assemble. The last thing you want to do is start breaking bolts !!! That's EXACTLY what's on the agenda for today. It's taken to "Friday" but we have finally reached "work on the car" day. 👍👍👍👍

Kingpins were common on most vehicles until they went to ball joint suspension. The last time I changed kingpins was on my old 1971 F150 pickup with Ford's Twin I-Beam suspension. Not so much a problem with "Death Wobble" but noticeable play in the vertical axis with the wheel off the ground and tire wear problems.

How are the brakes actuated? I didn't see a line or cable coming off. I see some kind of connection at 1:14. What is that?

90% of the time, death wobble is caused by to much toe in with worn out parts. I have eliminated death wobble in vehicles that had completely worn out suspension by adjusting the toe in to 0... Not real safe but it got a few more miles out of them before they had to be repaired... And I have also seen bad death wobble on completely brand new vehicles that had too much toe in... I figured this out long time ago when my Jeep had a half dozen shops try to fix it and none of them could ever figure it out. Every suspension part was replaced several times and it cost me over $2000. But then they would align it to specs and still had death wobble. I drove down the road with my head hanging out the window and watched what was happening and this is how I figured out it was excessive toe in..... I could give an explanation but I have already typed more than I should...lol...

A lot of the video had the parts to high on the screen when you were handling them. Great info. Wish you were a little slower on the removal process.

Thanks for the feedback. That was partly my error. These were filmed alone using an Iphone and I was not aware of the crop that would be done so it could be uploaded. It's something I've taken into consideration on future videos!

Consider yourself very very lucky. After 90 years my king pins were frozen in place. Had to drop the whole front assembly and press them out.

I can't put my nervousness diving into this project into words. I went in hoping for the best but planning to need a lot of heat and a press. Watching that kingpin move with the first hit of the hammer sent me over the moon!

Kyle Smith Nothing to be nervous about. The Model A is about as simple a car as you could find. They are wonderful cars. Have been helping my father-in-law restore his 31 coupe that was involved in a wreck. I started a channel to document the process, but have had to put it on hold for the last few weeks as. Channel name Modelabungalow. Can’t wait to see more progress on your A!

Dad's... Always getting it done, and if not done yet their probably working at getting it done. Now since you measured the King-pin's. Did you also measure the Axel mounting point to see if it also needs to be sleeved and reamed to fit that new King-pin???
@Flatlanders_Garage
@Flatlanders_Garage 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I did measure the axle as well and was surprised that it was in good shape too. I got lucky here in that the bushings seem to have done their job and were the only thing to wear out. Or maybe I just changed everything before it got too bad. Either way, I'm gonna take it!

As is just dropping the measuring of the king pin and the bushings to determine where the failure was. I guess we didn't need to know that.

OMG I hate you so much! I had to torch the hell out the kingpins on my old ford pickup. Then pound on them for like a day! Also had to ream mine too. Steering was a dream after they were repaired though!!
