You have the right idea! I myself has been commissioned by a local military installation museum to build their 1/72 scale aircraft exhibits, and I've used used Testors Model Master FS and Military paints but I cut their paint 1:1 mixture of paint to lacquer thinner, because the lacquer thinner makes the paint have a better bite to the primer coats, but my lacquer thinner is the Wally World brand! It's cheaper than brand names and the Testors paint doesn't have all the flaws that the Testors thinner cause when painting with an airbrush, but now since Testors went Woke and screwed over every modeler that used their brands by stopping the production of their MM brand of paints, now I had to move to Humbrol, Mr. Color and Tamiya brand paints.

I wouldn't have thought to use auto body clear coat. I built a de-greasing oven similar to your model oven out of a 35-gallon metal garbage can and four 100-watt light fixtures. I use it to get heavy grease and oil out of wood furniture parts, old rifle stocks, basically anything wooden that has soaked up too much grease and won't take a finish. That you re-purposed an old oil drill bit case is even cooler. Fantastic work!

Hey my brother, Thanks for the cool vid, I like when you take time to share with all us diecast junkies. You are my hero . Ive been restoring cars for about 30 plus years, but Never to the level that you do. I have now replaced all my old and decrypted paints , brushes, ect,ect ,still had a few of the old and hardened body shop kits they used to sell with body filler 2 tubes of the testers good old glue. That used to make my dog stager around when i was done. Never thought about the dog hanging out. He prob had a headache like i did. Didn't even Have bar codes on it.lol. think it came from two guys. ( the walmart of the day) even came with sand paper. Any way, think im having a flash back, i got in the paint section and got lost in all the pretty colors, hobbie store came a long way since i way last there. Spent about $200.00.. You sir have inspired me to really get into it again, and for that i thank you! Till the next time.. 🤘 🏴☠️ 🎃 🏍

I've tried several different scale model clearcoats and none worked that well, probably at least partly from user error, but from my limited experience what worked best for me was plain old rustoleum gloss clear sprayed into a plastic cup then poured into an airbrush. Although it did take like a week to harden.

Excellent video! And add me to the list of people who want to see that Magnum turned into a cop car (RCMP?). I lived in Saskatchewan for eight years and our local RCMP detachment had the most amazing unmarked vehicle for undercover work/catching speeders. It was a pickup truck, complete with a snowmobile in the back! First time I saw it, I was like, "Yeah, so?" Then I noticed the red and blue lights.

Thank you so much for sharing. I use a dehydrator to speed up drying.
@lucydunford59011 ай бұрын
Any advice for using a dehydrator? I’ve just bought one but haven’t been able to find much info online. Wondering what temp to use for clear lacquer and how long it needs to be in there? How long does the car need to be in the dehydrator after each layer of lacquer, and how long after the final wet coat of lacquer for it to fully cure? It’s very cold and rainy where I live at the moment and I’m tired of waiting forever for it to cure so I can sand/polish
@jaydsdiecastgarage11 ай бұрын
really depend on the dehydrator mine is a glass bowl and I find the point where the heat bulb turns on and back it off just a bit and run it for 90 minutes some longer trial and era mostly to hot it boilsthe paint or burns it. hope this helps. Jay@@lucydunford590

The Redline Shop paints are awesome, as well as their black “vinyl top” paint. I actually have all their colors from the Spectraflame to their 70’s and 80”s muscle car colors! Their clear coat is the best I’ve used. I’m glad that I found this video to just make my own, it’s definitely way cheaper! On my 1:24 scale models I actually use Minwax floor shine, lol! That makes a great wet look for larger scale!! I bought a cheaper airbrush gun just for it!! You could brush it on, as many people do but it looks better and it’s faster!

Great video! I bought auto clear to do some old die-cast figures. Brutal trying to find 2 part clear. I ended up getting from Caswell, which are great. But, I used the regular 4:1 with a lot of varsol and ended up getting the exact issues you covered. Had to strip 4 figures and start from scratch. Sucked even worse as I had got a decent chrome finish that was ruined. Thanks for sharing, as this is going to really help my next attempt. You the man, Sea Bass!

The 1/24 model car community uses “Mr. Color Leveling Thinner” @ 4:1:1 (One part). “Leveling” indicates retarder and the ingredients are; 2-Pentanone, 4-methyl-2-Pentanone, and 4-hydroxy-4-mehyl. I’m going to try it because I had the exact same results as your first spray. Do you have an opinion on this, please, Sir? Thank you.
@olo3985 ай бұрын
thank you, been looking for this answer. I saw a car YT try this and other 2k videos by YTers showed how they only used reducer. I build gundams MG and wanted to do a chrome candy with 2k clear. I use a linear compressor (L10) so doesn't hit high psi but i have an AB that comes with .5/.7 needle/nozzle combinations. I had the problem in the 4:1 ratio, need to spray thin coats for black base>2kclear>chrome>lacquer color clear>decals>2k so I'm glad you can thin with Mr Lvling thinner since I have a lot of that. I have seen Korean Yters do this with great succes that I want to emulate. Thanks again.
