This sad looking stationary live steam engine definitely needed some love.
Built by Jensen in the 1970's or 80's.
Some minor challenges stripping it down but a fun project and very satisfying to have it running at the end of the video.
Thanks for watching - if you liked the video please give it a THUMBS UP don't forget to subscribe. :)

A beautiful restoration. I had one of these when I was a kid in the 1950s. Mine was probably made in the 1920s or 1930s. Watching yours, I can still smell it to this day.

Awesome restoration. Something unrelated caught my eye and I had to pause it for a while. I have a Dewalt 20V max cordless drill and it's great but one thing that bothered me is it did not have a built in hex bit holder for a Phillips screw driver like the previous models. I thought about creating a 3D printed one but had not got around to it. Now I'm watching your restoration and wait a minute, what is that thing on the side of your drill? Oh it's what mine did not have. So I go to Amazon and sure enough they sell them and there are two spots on the drill for them. Good but one more check on Thingverse and two others have already designed them for the drill. Yay! I am now 3D printing them for each side of my drill and that made my day. No more misplacing the screw bit. OK back to the restoration.

Re: the engine restoration - There's quite a bit more to getting this horizontal engine running smoothly again than what's in the video. As a retired 3rd Class Stationary Engineer, I speak of dealing with what this restored engine presents . First, is what the viewer sees actually what the restorer is confronted with? Specifically , does this engine actually come with an inside admission piston valve mechanism? Or, as is more common with these toys , is this vale mechanism simply a "block " valve with outside admission made to look like a piston valve mechanism? This would be a very important determination to make before setting the valve on this engine. Secondly, a determination would have to be made as to whether the engine 's valve motion should be timed for "running over" or "running under". It appears in the video it was decided to time the valve gear for running "over" , or twelve o'clock on the flywheel rolling towards the engine from the flywheel side. Setting the valve on a horizontal engine is usually easier than on a vertical engine in that you don't have to compensate for the weight of the piston , piston rod at the crank end of the stroke , so it would be equal lap and lead at both ends here. The problem with these small toys is the math to physical, measurable dimensions when having to represent 1/2 of a millimeter of distance in dimension and produce that measurement accurately at the valve linkage for proper lap and lead at both the head and crank ends of the piston stroke.

Just came across this video. Like you, I too bought a used Jensen 75 off e-Bay at a low price. It was in similar condition. Sadly, I did not take images before restoration, but I did take them after completion. The good news is that Jensen is still in business, and you can order replacement hardware fairly reasonably. I got a new sight glass, fuel tray, authentic rivets, and gaskets as well as some valve oil. It was also missing the stack, which you can see I also obtained. Best of all, they have a flat plate tool for getting the sight glass ring out! I used Sterno fuel for heating mine, but I would be interested in what that was that you were using. Was that a small butane tank? Timing of the engine is fairly critical to its operation. The optimal setting is when both forward and backward are identical speeds. However, you can favor one direction over the other and that engine will scream! Now to find accessories to hook up to it. Here's a link to images of mine restored: www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/wfmpxifu15z9w19xqtmk4/h?rlkey=xjsewsu43bkzhwklawdzkt0np&dl=0

I have the same model engine and it is pretty much in the same condition. And the reason is it's own story for some other time. I plan to refurbish mine, but want to mimic the bricks with mortar, to look like the original closer. And yes there is a smoke stack that goes on the steam boiler assembly the sticks up higher then anything else. And it is the same brick look too. If you want a smoke stack, I'm sure the company sells replacements... Thumbs Up!

Hi Gary. The Boiler house wasn't painted, I think it was plated with copper perhaps. I tried to clean and paint strip it but nothing came away so I blasted it instead. That revealed more of a metal discoloration instead of a stained paint which I had thought it was. Even though I would have loved to re-plate in copper I've never done that so went with the Black High temperature paint. I have seen other Jensen engines in Black, I don't know if what was an option.

Jensen supplies replacement glass and a little rectangular flat piece of metal that fits the sight glass ring. You can cut a 50-cent piece in half and file the "points" slightly to fit and you have two sight glass wrenches.

Just curious here, but is this a Mamod steam engine in disguise? The Mamod equivalent engine had an imitation chimney at the back end of the boiler, right on top of that otherwise pointless 'half-moon' imitation brick section. I'm not sure, but I think the exhaust steam from the engine was also vented up the chimney, on the Mamod version.

@Blackcountrysteam - Yes, I noticed that too. Trying to set the valve on these very small toys has got to be tough to get it correct. Dimensions and measurements are so small that applying the the math to this and then representing it accurately at the affected mechanical parts has got to be tough. Think trying to produce a half mm of distance of lap or lead , and then secure that measurement with something as small as these engines . Need a magnifying glass !!

It's quite common, especially on models made in the last 15-20 years, that are painted a salmon pink color. the paint discolors considerably after the first firing, so a lot of people use high temp black paint, as it's readily available at most hardware stores. But most Jensen owners (myself included,) will agree that the original copper plated metal is far superior.

Jensen was producing engines before wilesco was. I think even as far back as 1927. Wilesco started off making toys in the early 1900s and in the late 40's early 50's started producing model steam engines.

I started cringing around the 4 minute mark and could not watch anymore. Try to understand this. When metals corrode heavily the corrosion product expands and can chemically join the two surfaces. Sheer brute force means you have little understanding of how to undo the seized joint. Recently, I found a pair of long nose pliers completely rusted, if I applied enough opening force I would have broken the handles. Using logic, the fulcrum was rusted in and chemically bound. WD 40 does not work if it cannot penetrate the joint. The only solution was to heat the pliers. This did not work after 5 attempts. So logic tells you to heat the outside of the pliers and cool the inside fulcrum part with water. This actually worked and unseized the handles a little and more WD 40 freed them completely. Rust between close surfaces like in pliers expands about 10% causing tremendous internal pressure locking up the joint. Only heat and contraction and expansion will release it. I restore miniature engines, I'm a metallurgist and metalwork teacher.

Just use Deox-C it's a powder you mix in water, submerge the rusted item and leave it a few days. I tried it on a pair of totally seized instrument calipers and it released the 1/16th thread as well.
