Hey I am from Philly and I have decided to give it all a go again. Build a modular setup but I wanted to thank you for posting these easygoing videos. Kudos to you man. Thanks

Very nice! I use pastel chalks to weather with and works great. Prepping the surface with dull coat, works really well to allow the chalks to adhere.

So much talk about rising prices and sticker shock. I fully agree. I still remember when $10 would buy a decent structure kit. Then a few years ago, that same $10 would have purchased a few detail parts to embellish a $30 structure kit. Earlier this year, I spent $10 on foamboard to mock up a few structures before cutting up styrene kits that would cost me $100's if I had to replace them today. Unfortunately, with the changing economy, I can't even earn as much today as I could back then. What I used to be able to buy for an hour's pay in the year 2000, now costs me more than a day's pay. Fortunately, there are still some areas of the hobby that can be done cheaply. Did I hear someone say "more scenery, fewer trains"?

NEW SUBSCRIBER!! Enjoy all your videos, well at least the ones I have watched, but I'm positive that I will get to all of them. I have N scale layout in progress set on a door plus added few extra inches on both Length and Width. You are very creative and enjoy the scratch building and kit bashing videos the best!!! Keep up the great work and look forward to NEW videos!

DJ, great work. I like the weathering techniques. However, that facility is not a cement plant. The true cement plant (production facility) would have one or two rotary kilns, and several aggregate processing buildings associated with it. What you have masterfully built is a cement storage area. Love the videos, tips and insights.

As an aside I've used the pvc pipe for my model of a cement plant also. Have to get around to finishing it, life got in the way. But as far as paint I used a cement textured spray paint on the silos. Came out nice. Cement silos for a cement plant. Lol

DJ: Great tips and excellent video! This will help me as I build a cement plant for my layout. I, too, use chalks for weathering and find the results fantastic without a lot of mess. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thanks!! --John (Wash, DC)

One bottle of white paint, mixed with any of those powders, and it is easier and cheaper than mixing expensive bottles of paint. I bought those chalks like 3 yrs ago, too.

WARNING: Scratch building is addictive. Once you see that you can make anything you want, and not have to settle for whats available, it becomes an addiction, lol.

Very nice DJ. Wish I had the patience & eye sight to model in N scale, but just a bit too small for me. Guess I'll keep going with the OO Gauge Cement plant looks fantastic. Keep up the good work & keep the videos coming. Cheers Ian.

I'm a recent subscriber. I noticed that when you cut the pvc pipe for your grain silos you got different lengths. If you could attach a piece of thin plywood to the saw's fence to extend it beyond the factory fence on the saw, You could then clamp a stop block on the fence extention at the desired length from the blade. This will allow you to cut anything the the exact same length. You may have gotten this advice already. I have been enjoying your videos. Lots of good tips for the modeler on a small budget. keep up the good work. Like the humor.

I am actually going to build a new one in January. I'll try that, because I want them perfect this time and working around the size differences posed a challenge. Thanks for the tip. :)

Great Job! I wish I seen your Video 1st. I went out and bought 1 inch Pvc for the Cement Plant, but should of went at least 2 inch. I painted it paynes grey, then used a Raw Sienna mixed with Burnt Sienna for rust and came out nice. Great Videos. I subscribed!

Cool. I just made a coal silo using PVC, and weathered it, and it looks awesome. I will post pics on my website under PHOTOS soon.

I committed myself to modeling an exact place and time, and unfortunately don't need one. Only thing I would change would be to measure twice and cut once when it came to the silos. Ben will have to raise the ground with sculptamold to make it perfectly level.

Thanks Dj your a lifesaver I don't have to spend 47 bucks on that HO scale cement plant at the hobby shop but I will have to spend 27 bucks on the sheet plastic did you know this trick also works on grain elevators I will use the same methods for that also since I have hoppers.

So you're building this for N scale? It looks kinda big for N scale. I use women's makeup I get from the dollar store as it sticks a lot better and is less expensive than weathering chalks. You can get just about any color you ever want. Cheers from eastern TN

I was worried that the pvc wouldn't take paint, but it took the grey primer so well. Simple rustoleum auto primer.

Question, Since I know nothing about cement silos etc. What exactly is in the silos. and can any covered hopper care be used? Are we unloading or loading the hoppers??? Sorry for such a convoluted question.
@djstrains
@djstrains 7 жыл бұрын
I'm always honest, I don't know. What I can assume is that the cars are unloaded here because there is a dump track for hoppers. I also assume that it keeps the powdered cement dry. I have found pics that show the building loading boxcars of bagged cement. It is a great question, and I am eager to see others responses.

How wide (in.) do you recommend for HO scale on the silos?
@djstrains
@djstrains 10 жыл бұрын
since I don't do much in Ho, I'd suggest looking at bing maps (birds eye) for a cement plant you want to model, that has a covered hopper next to it and then use your own hoppers to estimate the size. That is really how I judge my stuff by. I even took a freight car to home depot one time, lol!
