Looking Good can't wait to see some track laid. Although I think you are right to be worried about the heater's position though, I beleive that type of heater relies on convection which will be limited with the baseboad just above it and yes will make the baseboard just above very hot !. Adding a ventalation grill / slot in the baseboard to allow the heat to rise up might help, or leave a gap bwtween your baseboad and the wall. Heaters are best under windows to help reduce / prevent condensation. I have a couple of 500w flat panel heaters (500mm square) mounted on the inside of both my doors that work quite well and don't take up any wall space. Other than that everything is looking good. Dave.

Thanks mate, same! I'm itching to get the track laid and start running some trains but I want to ensure I take my time and ensure it's all done to a high standard. The heater is an issue, but I do have my own Dyson heater, which does hot in the winter, and acts as a fan in the summer. I'll probably stick to using that in the garage. The baseboards getting damaged is probably the worst thing that could happen! Thanks again :)

It's been a while, very glad to see that you've managed to make lots of progress! Hope you manage to recuperate the money from the guy who ran. Following with interest to see how the layout comes to life.

Been a nightmare tbf, I did think about packing in at one point but I am glad I carried on. Can't let them win I guess. He is currently paying us back in instalments, but I'll be very surprised if he pays us the full amount back.

I did think about giving up, but I've always wanted to build my own layout since I was a kid, so I just carried on till I got to a point I could get the project restarted! Thanks mate!

Glad to see it’s coming together. That looks like a fantastic layout space. I had no idea the Pendolinos were originally 8 cars. I thought they were all delivered as 9 cars and some were extended to 11 cars.
@houndog13724 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, I'm lucky to have the space I do, I just want to get track down and trains running now lol. Yes, the first few Pendolinos delivered were only 8 coaches long, however they all got extended to 9 in the end. If you watch some videos from the WCML (around 2003/2004) you'll see 8 car Pendolinos! Thanks!

Great progress on your fantastic railway room, its going to be an excellent layout for long trains. What is it with nobhead builders that makes them think it is ok to rip people off, still the happyness in your voice says that you are enjoying your new room.
@houndog13724 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! That's the plan, full length Pendolinos/HSTs and Freightliners ect. They're awful people, the previous builder in particular showed no remorse for his actions, and even had the check to ask for more money! It might be an overstatement, but I'm in love with it now it's starting to take shape. Been a dream to start a layout for years!

Hi, saw the last video about conversion and you could hear in your voice how gutted you were. Great that the Phoenix moment happened and it now looks great. You should name and shame that B******. Just wondered , is the garage single skin walls? I've just finished building a single skin outbuilding for mine and looking at what I can do for the inside walls. Obviously don't want any damp coming through if posible and was wondering what your guys have done and if it's working ok. Looking forward to your new build ( hope I won't be far behind you lol). Stay safe, regards Bobby 'T'

Hi mate, I would love to share the dudes name, however I risk him failing to pay us the money back. From what I have heard, he's done it to quite a few people. The garage is indeed single skinned. To insulate it, a frame was built around the perimeter of the garage, with insulation being installed within the frame. There is a couple inch wide gap between the frame and the bricks to allow breathability. So far, so good and the difference is remarkable! You too mate, cheers

First of all I know how you feel, we had the same issue with our builders just walking away and not coming back, years later I am still playing catch up and doing it myself, as for the money, gone. But it has not got me down and I have now done the loft myself which they were going to do, and now planning on the next stage for my layout. Your garage conversion is fantastic, I am so envious, mine is great but I worry about getting older as I am not a spring chicken anymore. Is that just an electric heater fixed to the wall with no vent attached, if so I would simply remove it from the wall and put it above the layout having extended the cable. My other suggestion is that you do not need that huge area in the middle and in later years you will only want to make the sides bigger. At this stage with the coronavirus a bit more relaxed I would purchase more wood and extend both sides another foot giving you three feet of base to work with, it will be worth it in the long run and you will not regret it. Otherwise you have a fantastic layout room for a fantastic hobby and I can only wish you all the best and watch your progress. Regards Chris

It's been a nightmare with the builders, a small minority seem to think they are above the law and can run away with peoples money. It's crazy and should not be allowed to happen. Being honest, I have no idea how the heater has been installed (I came home from work and it was installed by the electrician). It shouldn't pose too much of an issue, I have a mobile heater which I can move about if need be, and the garage is now pretty warm anyway. Extending the sides is something I have thought about, but it shouldn't pose an issue with our current track plan. They say a model railway is never complete, so who knows, we may choose to extend it in a few years! Keep at it mate, you can't let these rogue builders win! Stay safe Matt

Very interesting, shame about the heater installation. You should try it now before you lay any tracks to see if there is any warp whilst the investment is just wood and a lot less time!
@houndog13724 жыл бұрын
I don't plan on using the heater is I'm being honest, I have my own that I can move about if need be anyway. The entire frame is now up, and with another lockdown looming, I don't want to risk causing damage lol. Thanks mate

So what was the deal with the build then? Last video update had the walls lined with a thin studwork and that was it. Now you have a completed building with really thick walls... care to detail what your new builder has done to give you this exceptionally modern train room ? - Did you manage to get any redress from the previous builder ?
@houndog13724 жыл бұрын
It was rather hard to get any filming done whilst the garage was being finished off, working lates meant that I only saw it when it was dark, and I had no lighting installed then. Basically, the frame work you see in the previous video remained, however the side with the windows was not straight (Bodge by previous builder). So, that needed to have a metal frame put over that frame, before it could be insulated. Then, it was just a case of add insulation, plasterboards, plaster and paint. The electrics were fitted a few months later by our own electrician. Regarding the previous builder, its proving rather difficult to get the money back. Courts and Solicitors want more money to even look at the case, with no guarantee we will have any success. The builder in question is known for ripping people off, he has been doing it for a few years and knows how to get away with it! (Wish I knew this at the time!) Hope this helps, Matt :)
