You can fill gaps around and behind the castingss simply by pouring liquid hydrocal that's close to curing behind them and around them. It works. Or, slather some into place like mortar and quickly stick the castings into place, support for a bit, and then it will hold. (Pre-wet the back of the casting first so that it doesn't wick up too much water from your new pour....or the new stuff won't set well). Also, you can crumple aluminum foil sheets somewhat to make great molds. Lay the opened up sheet in a bed of sand or even some ballast (for the tracks since you probably have some). Place 1 cm or more of the sand/ballast in a 9X12 pan, or a smaller one, and then lay the aluminum mold in a depression in the sand. Pour in your hydrocal. Weight several hours, and then peal off the foil from your new rock casting.

Hello I have a question for you wanted to know if you have any videos on showing how you make your stands to hold your mold can't not find any videos on it???
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 10 жыл бұрын
It sounds as though your rock castings are not fully cured….meaning they need to dry longer. High humidity, cool temps, etc. can affect drying time, you could add a fan to the area to speed up the process. You should wait until they are fully dry before you attempt to add them to your layout. If you do not feel that they fully cure, mix another batch of Hydrocal and try a little less water in the mixture.

Bought some of these today and messed up by making the plaster too runny and didn't think to add a support structure underneath the mold. Checked KZbin and of course there's a bunch of tutorials.

Is the Hydrocal Plaster nontoxic? Ive used it before and don't recall smelling anything but just want to be safe.
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert Жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you for your question! Lightweight Hydrocal Plaster is not toxic, however there are cautions to be aware of that are on the packaging. This would also apply to the other Plasters as well.

Is it possible to dilute the latex rubber so its can be sprayed on with a spray bottle? So instead of 3 or 4 heavy coats it could be a couple very thin coats to start with then a couple heavy coats afterwards.
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 2 жыл бұрын
Hello there! It is best to not thin the Latex Rubber. Adding water could change the make-up of the product. It is thick by design to adhere to vertical surfaces. Thank you for your question and for your interest in our products!

2 things. 1 . How do you clean them??? 2. They sometimes break, should I use water / soap solution in mold first?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 6 жыл бұрын
To Clean Rock Molds: Use a damp paper towel to wipe out excess plaster flakes. Wash Rock Mold in warm soapy water. If excess plaster is caked into crevices, use a plastic brush (like an old toothbrush) and some soapy water to release the plaster. Excess leftover plaster from previous castings can cause new castings to crumble. Be sure to clean the Rock Mold thoroughly after use/before next use. Prepare the Rock Mold for a new casting by spraying or brushing it with “wet water.” Wet Water reduces surface tension, reduces bubbles and can help with cracking. To make Wet Water: Add 2 drops dish soap to 1 cup water.

You may want to try to spray your mold with a release agent. Before pouring plaster into the Latex Rubber mold, spray the mold with wet water (mix 1-2 drops liquid dish soap in 8 fl. oz. water). The issue could be also curing time. Weather and environment definitely affect this, so you may need longer than we say due to your areas conditions. Another thing that may help is to add a little less water (about 10% - 15% less) for a heavier plaster, and then to double your stirring time before pouring into the molds. If you continue to have problems then we recommend using Shaper Sheet™ Plaster (C1180) or Super Strength Plaster™ (C1199) instead. Let us know how things go, we will help in any way possible.

Matt is freaky talented. Check out his waterfall video bone of the best I seen. Question. I have a heat surge fireplace with a fake rock mold inside. It is about 15 inches long. I want to creat the same look for my layout. Can I buy a Product to create that mold then pour Hydrocal inside it. Just bought the Riverpass HO bit looks Awesome!

I like the rock molds, but, for me, the creek bank molds are a waste of time.... I cannot get them out of the molds without breaking them. I've tried every thing - longer curing times - different mix ratios - nothing works - they still break...

I have been doing that..... It is pretty cold weather here at the moment, I figure, that maybe the plaster is not cured completely when I remove them from the molds... I will let them cure for a much longer period and see if that is the cure... I'm getting pretty frustrated with it....Cheers

I am so sorry for your frustration. The weather may be a factor. Here are a couple options as you try again... Your suggestion for a longer curing time will likely help. Another thing that may help is to add a little less water (about 10% - 15% less) for a heavier plaster, and then to double your stirring time. If you continue to have problems then we recommend using Shaper Sheet™ Plaster (C1180) or Super Strength Plaster™ (C1199) instead. Let us know how things go, we will help in any way possible.
