Good job John! Your system is of use to me. To seal ropes i use a gluemixture that i make myselfes. It's a mixture of thinner and parts of transparant grittings from plastic models. The grittings will solve in the thinner. I then use a brush to cover the ropings with the mixcture wich will harden when it dries sealing the ropings without beeing vissable.
@Johnbuildsiconic3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ron. I will have to try and make that mixture. I will have to learn all the techniques use with rigging a ship again. It’s a bit of a black spot. Not many good videos about rigging a ship
@ronkrijbolder4373 жыл бұрын
@@Johnbuildsiconic think out of the box. The general advise given when rigging is to start from the yards down. In the builds of sailing ships i did, i did it the other way around starting from the bottom upwards. In order to do it efficient i measure and cut pieces of rope and mount them on their specific place according to the lineplandrawwing. Mind you these are 20th century sailing ships (Preussen, Sedov scratschbuild) and the rigging of these ships is generally the same on all ships. Are you going to make your model with or whithout sails? When you succeed making the mixture you have to ventilate your workspace because it doesn't smell nice. I keep it in an old gluebottle.

@@ronkrijbolder437 I did the same with my Constitution, tied off the bottoms, attaching masking tape to identify the line. My opinion, a much easier method.
@ronkrijbolder4373 жыл бұрын
@@frankwilliams9706 in the scratchbuild of the Preussen wich is a five mast full ship. I went to the nearby maritieme museum in Rotterdam. They have a rather large library wich contained info and drawings of the ship in 1 : 250 scale. I calculated it to a 1 : 75 scale and made a drawing of the lining and rigging plan. In the rigging plan i gave every line a number seperating of course the main rigging and the rigging for the sails. Main rigging from the midle to the left or right. Sail rigging from the sides. I used the numbers on the drawings i made as a reference. In case of the Sedov i made photo's during a sail event in Amsterdam and used these as a reference in combination with info on drawings from a Heller Pamir model. Numbering the lines is of couse also a good idea.

@@ronkrijbolder437 Such a good idea I never thought of that! Always had a problem attaching ropes at the bottom as space is really tight to get in there. I've a new build coming up and I'm gonna try your method. Thanks!

Only an idea John, but considering the brittleness of CA glue, shouldn’t you tie a whipping kind of knot to ensure it will last forever?
@Johnbuildsiconic3 жыл бұрын
Hi the last turn was knotted. Maybe it wasn’t very clear in the video. It’s very hard when working with black parts to see the detail on film

Nice video. Did you treat the thread to help keep it in position as you added the gammoning loops, e.g. beeswax or diluted pva?
@Johnbuildsiconic3 жыл бұрын
Hi glen, I painted the lashing with diluted pva after. But I don’t think it was necessary because of the way the rope is lashed in the crisscross then bound together

Hi john, did you glue the bowsprit into the ship or did you just place it in under its own steam. That's actually my next job, I put up the Royal plates and the cherubs first, but a lovely job you are doing.

@@Johnbuildsiconic Using white glue will indeed last longer,. I have some projects concerning doing a scratch build of the 1 : 84 Amerigo Vespucci and restoring two other Mantua Panart models of this ship. In one of these models all the deckhousings and the photoedged parts where eather glued whit superglue or whith Uhu glue an these glues had totally deteriated .so i had to redo all these parts. So yes when possible use white glue. I've also seen persons using superglue for example to do deckplanking. Okay whiteglue will take a while to dry but the result is the same in looks but it will be more steady.
