Fantastic work as usual Olha! So mesmerizing to watch and listen. Only thing I wish was added (beyond the video not ending of course ;P) is a brief description of what each line is for. I know you put comments in the videos and name most of the lines but when you end up with a mass of ropes it can be hard to follow where each goes at times. Other than that small issue it was perfect. Thank you so much for sharing and I can’t wait for the next video.

Everytime I watch your rigging I feel the urge to tear off the rope from my own model. You are both inspiration and nightmare. ;-) Let me ask a scientific question: on which source(s) the rigging layout is based? In parts it seems somehow archaic, so I wonder if Pavel had some contemporary artwork at hand for his design... Or have you, Olha, redesigned it on your own expertise?
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I haven't been called Nightmare yet, that's my husband's nickname)))) He is a professional underwater ship archaeologist!.. This is a design by a Croatian modeler for a Croatian manufacturer MarisStella. And this model makes my husband's eye jump - a complete disaster in design. The model is made on the basis of an engraving from a silver church plate. Therefore, everything from the lines of the ship is a complete mistake. The hull has a very shallow draft, the location of the bowsprit in the air, guns and carriages are 200 years younger than the period, belaying pins also did not exist yet)))) and so the whole design... That's why it's just an imagination of the carrack or as such models were called in the 17th century - Votive models... P.S. I use the book for re-rigging: The Rigging of Ships in the days of the Spritsail Topmast (1600-1720) by R. C. Anderson.
@torstenmay204
@torstenmay204 Жыл бұрын
@@OlhaBatchvarov Thank you Olha for the exhaustive answer. I didn't want to belittle the model or your work - it is a hobby, and everything goes. Your work speaks for itself. The Anderson book is already on my wishlist; it is time to get it. However, for the carrack it would be still too young, it should be between 1500-1550 (or even older). Kroum certainly can clarify. He already helped me with some resource on the Ashmolean model, which is the period I'm mostly interested.

What sort of fittings were typically used at the reefing points, and other attachment sites, in the sails?
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Жыл бұрын
The problem is that during this period there were no reef points. At that time, they used extra sails (bonnet) to increase the area of the sail. One bonnet on the foresail and 2 bonnets on the mainsail. But on this set, the manufacturer made all possible mistakes and the final point became the reef points))) I don't even know what to do with this mess on the mainsail...

A while ago I commented on how good your rope work is(and it is very good), and that got me thinking. Perhaps your work is too good. On naval vessels one might expect uniformity and precision in the marlins spike seaman ship, but on merchant ships the standards would be different. With polyglot crews each hand would have their own set of knots. I can always tell when certain men have been on one of the tugboats I work on, by the knots the leave behind. This doesn’t mean their knots are wrong or ineffective.Signatures if you will. I am the only guy in the fleet that ties a heaving line hitch for instance. Another consideration is the technique of putting a round turn on a cleat then figures of eight. This system is modern. It has been taught by sail training institutes from around the late 1970s,I believe. All that aside , thank you for the inspirational work!
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. Each captain adjusted the ship as he saw fit. Therefore, in books you can find descriptions of how, for example, one and the same tackle could be made and the direction where the end of the rope went, but you will never find information on which Belaying pin or Cleats... Therefore, I use the only rule "so that the ropes did not cross"... P.S. Belaying pin could not actually have been present on this carrack, they appeared much later. This is the manufacturer's interpretation. It is more likely that there were Cleats on the carracks. And it was precisely in that period that Kevells was used, which the manufactutrer completely ignored. I tie the rope to the Cleats in the most convenient way because you won't see it under the spools later...
