I've been wanting to try this for quite a while. Recharging the magneto magnets of a Model T Ford while still in the car. Does it really work?

Nice Video... Here's another method that was developed and tested by Tom Carnegie multi winner of the Montana 500 and Model T genius! He offers this procedure, Open the HH cover and rotate the engine so the magnet screws are level on a horizontal plane. Remove the mag post and insert a insulated bolt directly to the solder connection. Run the leads to a welder or the battery setup if no welder available. Make a striking contact Away from the motor. It is Not necessary to find a N or S the magnets will simply reverse polarity! Some people suggest to rotate the flywheel and strike again at different locations but this has not shown to increase the mag performance. It's a good practice to not apply the voltage through the mag post itself because this may weaken or damage the light weight spring on the mag post. Thanks for posting and I love your tractor sight!

A great educational video. I own model T Ford car over 15 years and I would like to have this video so many years before. Thank you for your insights. So appreciated

Thank you for the video. My 26 T stopped running on magneto the other day. I was driving it, then lost some power and back fired and stalled. It runs perfectly on battery, so I’ll have to give this a whirl. Thank you again

You are welcome! Good luck with it. I would actually check the mag post wire (check the entire length for bare/broken wire and shorts) and then the ignition switch functionality before trying this recharging procedure. Good luck!

It might have shorted out. I caught a piece of wire in mine and I had to take the transmission cover off to remove it to get it to work.

I tried to check the voltage of my 1922 FORDSON F engine after I reinstalled a newly repaired and charged magneto in my engine. I had it sitting on my workbench had my wife turn the hand crank over as fast as she could turn it while I held the red lead of volt meter on the "HOT" lead of the magneto and the black lead to ground on the block. But the Engine was rocking back and forth so much I could not read the volt meter I had lay on the head. I reached up with my left hand to steady the rocking the the block. Then CONTACT ⚡⚡ I got the SHOCK of my life! Every muscle in both arms contracted and my hair stood straights up like Einstein. I never did get an accurate reading. To this day I didn't know how much voltage that magneto put out.

They say AC voltage, like from your magneto, is approximately five times stronger/dangerous than DC is to a human. That’s a good zap!

It will fix weak magnets but my mag stopped working because a piece of safety wire broke off and shorted it out! I ended up finding it when changing bands.

I had my magneto completely die on me two different times. Pulled the mag post and spotted a bit of safety wire stuck to and shorting out the mag... Wire that got loose from installing the bands... I got it out and the mag works again but seems a little weaker. I may rig up an in car recharge. Update: I ran my engine... I have a Magnetometer installed in my car so I can see how it's doing all the time... Mag put out about 10 volts at a pretty high idle. I flashed the mag with just 12 volts, hit it 6 times. Now I get 20 volts with less RPM and the meter is nearly pegged at 30 volts running at 45-50 MPH. I had a heck of a time getting my compass to find a North pole, had to keep moving it away and coming up to the measured area on the hogg's head and bumping my jacked up rear wheel around.

Thanks for the video. I really enjoy them all. I am not familiar with old cars like this. Is there a really simple way to explain the issue this fixed?
@AntiqueCarsandStuff2 жыл бұрын
The car's internal magneto system creates its own electricity which runs the car. That system is made up of magnets and copper coils. If the magnets become discharged or weakened, it will not produce optimum voltage to run the car at peak efficiency. Recharging the magnets will resolve this issue as long as all the other components in that system are good. Thanks for watching!

Question: Must the car run on mag to test and charge? SUppose the car doesn't run on mag only on left position of key? Willl this procedure still work? and thank you for an excellent, well explained video! I subscribed.
@AntiqueCarsandStuff Жыл бұрын
Thanks Gary. The car does not need to run on mag. However, in my experience, this doesn't always work. I actually tried this on one of my other cars and it had no effect. I don't know why. One of the possible "unknowns" is the physical condition of the mag coils and the magnets themselves. If they are bad, this procedure has no chance. Anyway, good luck and be careful!
