‪@MerlinsOldSchoolGarage‬ is at it again! After the engine swap he puts the 1915 Model T Runabout on the dyno for a second test to find how much horsepower and torque it gained... or lost? Will this engine swap be a win for the model T or an embarrassment?

My Father , and I restored a bunch of T's back in the 60's / 70's...Not to HP them but back to factory spec's...Some are now in Museums. One thing we used to do to help cranking them was to put the driver-side wheel up on a jack...leave the trans in gear... crank the motor ( hand crank cars only )...The added drivetrain would add a kind of flywheel effect allowing one to really spin the motor. The practice was stopped when I sent a fully restored 26 out the garage...across the street into our neighbor's garage door. Hmmmm.... 36Hp running " T "...Will need to put a 9" in the rear next...Then replace the trans with something stronger..? And the " Hot Rod " was born... :) Take Care... Enjoy your show..!

Nice HP gain from 13.1 HP to 36 HP with all the upgrade parts on the model T. Very cool. 👍🇺🇸✌️
@keithammleter3824
@keithammleter3824 9 ай бұрын
That's as much an indication that the first motor was sick, as much as it indicates the worth of the upgrade parts. A stock model T engine is rated at 20 HP. Old Henry's data was a bit rubbery, but getting only 13 HP shows something is wrong.
@FJB8885
@FJB8885 9 ай бұрын
@@keithammleter3824 Henry's HP rating was from the crank not from the wheels.
@keithammleter3824
@keithammleter3824 9 ай бұрын
@@FJB8885 ; Yes, I understand that - it is the standard way to measure engine power - but you simply don't loose that much in the gears and differential. Modern hypoid differentials have better than 90% mechanical efficiency. The Model T diff had a non-hypoid design, so its efficiency would be better - around 96%. The gearbox used planetary bevel gears so it would be around 98% efficient. If he tested in top gear, that is straight through, so better than 99% efficient. So with 13.1 HP at the wheels, the engine output at the flywheel was only 13.1 divided by 0.95 i.e., 13.9 HP. That is simply WAY too low for an engine rated at 20 hp, and simply way too low for this 2.9 litre / 177 cu in engine even with its low compression ratio and poor breathing design.

@@keithammleter3824 The plot from 1922 (apparently from 1918 data) shows 12hp/81ft-lbs/20mph @ 800rpm and 20hp/65ft-lbs/40mph @ 1600rpm. The plot also notes 3.63:1 gear ratio and 30x3.5 tires which makes me think the measurements were taken at the wheels. It also suggest this modern dyno test never spun up the engine very far.
@keithammleter3824
@keithammleter3824 8 ай бұрын
@@mknm1349 ; Torque foot-pounds is calculated by multiplying power (in HP) by 5251 and then dividing by RPM. So, for 1600 RPM, 20 x 63025 / 1600 equals 65.6 foot-pounds - close enough to the specified 65 foot-pounds. So the specified power and torque output was at the engine flywheel as has long been standard practice for car engines. You can check this with a number of online calculators. If torque was defined to be that at the road wheels, it would be about (allowing for transmission losses) 20 x 0.9 x 5251 x 3.63 / 1600, i.e., 214 foot -pounds. Tyre diameter does not affect power or torque. The road wheels could not be turning at 1600 RPM as that would mean the car going at over 140 miles per hour. But 1600 dived by 3.63 equals 40 MPH which is what a T was capable of. It isn't clear from the video but it appears he slowly increased throttle until the dyno indicated power falling off, then slowly throttled down, which is the normal way to do it. It was probably running on only three cylinders when throttled up.

I've never seen a lifting eye stuck in a spark plug hole for engine hoist interface, but there it is--I guess that's how they did it back then, isn't it? Gave me the willies watching it, but that's just a lifetime of goofing around with newer stuff with aluminum heads talking, I suppose. That's probably what the shop manuals specified back then: "Take a No. 2 lifting eye and stab the bugger into the No. 3 spark plug hole"

Turbo it! A rear mount turbo. With a little intercooler hidden underneath. It should make 60 hp easily. Possibly 70hp. Just tune thr turbo to make boost higher in the rev range. To be easy on that tiny crank.maybe 5psi about 1800rpm. Definitely wouldn't push it further, without aftermarket crank and rods. Maybe 10 psi with a counterweighted crank.

We can add power to the GO department but what about the WOAH department? What have you done to the brakes? They used to say that in an emergency just jamb both feet on all 3 pedals. The standard optional extra for the "T" was a foot ruler, one side was marked in gallons to check how much fuel was in the tank, the other side marked in inches so you could work out how far you have traveled. Ted from down under.

My uncle had restored about 20 model T's one piece at a time, my dad did two, I had started one at age 18 but was more interested in chasing girls, my other uncle ended up with the one I started, and he used to always wrap his thumbs around the crank handle, one time it kicked back and shattered his hand and his wrist which never healed because he was very sick with cancer. So I noticed you wrapped your thumb around the crank handle also, just something that might save you you a lot of pain if you keep in mind not to do that. I still have me model t book too, which has the engine years based on the serial number, if you don't already know the year of your block.
