Model Trains Easy Weathering- Using PanPastels to Weather Rolling Stock

I spend some time showing you how to easily weather a freight car using PanPastels. We take a bargain eBay find that needs come TLC, and spend about 15 minutes at the workbench improving its look. Would it win a modeling contest? No, but that's not the point. Every freight car in the contest doesn't have to be your best and most detailed weathering job. It's about the overall effect as the train rolls by. What's your favorite way of modeling locomotives and rolling stock?

Great video Ryan! I have been using Pan Pastels for years. My first application of weathering years ago was black india ink diluted with alcohol but I get weird results with the factory paints on the newer models. So pretty much weather the same way as you demonstrated. Thanks!

I weathered the B&O S1a in the opening sequence with PanPastels. It’s my go-to method.

Nice How-to, Ryan. I have similar brushes for applying artist pigments. For pastels, I use a mix of brushes and sponges depending on the goal. I got 2 packages of 100 makeup sponges for Christmas. You know how hard it is to wear them out? 😄

I like the sponges too, depending on what I’m trying to do. The angled brushes are probably my favorite though.

Very. After about 10 days it's pretty much permanent. Handle it gently until then. It doesn't wear off. I have stuff I weathered with PanPastels a decade ago and still looks great.

@@alpugliesetrains9753 Thanks Al! Yeah, I really like the Big Six. Sunset/3rd Rail did a fantastic job on those. I thought the weathering turned out well.
