I'm surprised the DC-DC converter is mounted to the battery. You'd think it would be better to integrate into the high voltage equipment at the front (isn't the heat pump 400v?) to shorten that big 12v wire. Is there some safety reason for sending 12v directly from the back of the main battery?

12V components are cheap and available off the shelf, and can share commonality with the Model 3 and S and X. 48V components would be more expensive and probably require a bunch of custom parts to be made by or for Tesla. Apparently cost savings was more important than weight savings.
@jamesb.492
@jamesb.492 4 жыл бұрын
Disagree. Many car manufacturers are interested in 48v components and some have already moved in that direction. They just have to ask suppliers and they will be happy to deliver. Else someone else will be happy to deliver. Just look what Munro shows us. Not many standard components anyway, if any. Or did you see a 12v Pioneer radio?
@rwdplz1
@rwdplz1 4 жыл бұрын
@@jamesb.492 If Tesla goes to a supplier, say Bosch, and asks for half a million of a custom 48V part, do you think that's going to be cheaper than the ten million 12V parts they're already making for several other car makers? It's called 'economies of scale'. This is why manufacturers are interested in 48V systems the same way they're interested in electric cars: They're waiting for other companies to make the initial investment when it's more expensive, so they can come in later and benefit from the work already done when it's cheaper. And yes, my Pioneer stereo uses the same standard FAKRA antenna connectors you see on the Tesla infotainment system.

We get the 3 in Australia (where it starts at about USD$50k), and looking at the steering mechanism on the Y, I was struck by how much of it there was to "move". How much effort would it require, to build a RHD model?

Requiring the car to be constantly on in order to supply 12v support from the HV battery would suck a ton of power while the vehicle is off. It would basically require much of the vehicle to stay on all the time. The 12v battery allows the vehicle to completely power down and then be able to turn back on again with the stored energy. The battery also acts as a buffer to power surges and helps protect components by delivering a steady voltage supply. Its like how you can start an ICE and remove the battery and it will keep running. But if you want it to be able to run the next time you want to drive, you will have to either install a 12v battery or just never shut it off.

Most of telecom gear I work with in the central office like Cisco switches pull closer to 7 to 12 amps. The banks of lead acid batteries we use produce hundreds of amps which is why we often will use large copper buss bars overhead and attached relatively large cables to the rack distribution panels. Since it is DC from end to end, it is easy to filter with capacitor banks and basically the telephone exchange is essentially running under constant battery backup which gives us hours to fire up the generators since they often do not want to start right away due to neglect. The old ring generators produce a pretty respectable voltage and amperage from 48 V which you can feel pretty good (in the bad since) if you are sweaty and accidentally leaned against a terminal panel while an incoming call ring is being received.

There might be a lot of products designed to run off 48 volts. But probably none of them are automotive grade. This type of transition would make the parts very expensive to begin with. In the meantime, Tesla can use off-the-shelf 12v parts to it's heart's content.

24v might be a good intermediate step. Military vehicles often run 24v systems, I never got bit by 12 or 24Vdc, so it has safety on it's side as well (although with that fancy PDC (electronic fuse box) I'll bet they could build in GFCI or some other safety for even higher voltages).

The reason 12V is so popular is because DC-DC converters aren't as available for 48V ratings and a lot of electronics are low voltage. Another thing is that all the misc parts in a car made by vendors are using 12V and forcing the whole supply chain to design for 48V parts will be crazy, unreasonable cost and development time, extra parts to convert 48V to 12V if part can't be made to run off higher voltages like maybe a motor or something. What voltage does the heat pump run on? 12V is so ubiquitous that you can run LEDs, fans, motors, electronics with converters, actuators, switches, heaters, etc. Change it to 48V and suddenly you either need an DC-DC adaptor for every part or a part redesigned to work with 48V, neither is doable.

Why not change to USB C & 3.1 wiring. Since all electronics are controlled by their computer anyway they could save a lot of cables. UBS C & 3.1 can deliver not only super speeds but up to 20 volts and 5 ampere, hence 100 watts. That should be ample for all electronics including the led lights. Does a Tesla cooling system suck or blow? 🙂 Years ago in the Twin Cities while visiting Unisys for Microsoft, a Unisys engineer walked me through their corporate museum and explained that was one of the key differences between their mainframe liquid cooling system and IBM's - Unisys pumps suck the coolant through the system, while the IBM pushes it through the pipes. An inconsequential difference until a line is ruptured in which case the IBM will "blow" it all over the entire chassis!

About the change to 48V, not likely to happen in my opinion, as most new electronics likes lower voltages closer to 6-12V. Having power distribution busses running at 48V means more complicated and expensive dc-dc down converters. A reduction of wires diameters already happened with LED lighting etc. And a reduction in total wires lengths is happening already from several kilometers to a few hundreds meters. So it is over.

Possible answer to why 12V and not 48, maybe you’d need a heavier 48V battery to run a 48V system. I know you could just have power from the high voltage supply stepped down dc to dc, but then if there’s some fault surely you’d want to be able to run emergency lights etc.

Sandy, can you please check the option for a front facing 3rd row option, as shown in Tesla's website ? Do you see Tesla making a flat floor, moving the battery bump elsewhere similar to what they did for Model X ?

Can someone clarify whether 48 Volts is still the legal limit of low voltage circuits. Off-grid systems trended up from 12V to 48V some years ago. Cordless tools were 18V then added 42V tools but now some are 60V or 80V which is way higher than 48V. 😵

So am I correct in thinking that this car's heating and cooling system can, say, heat the cabin and at the same time cool the ADAS?

Yes.

Reverend Al looks like it. And its a great idea as you always have some source of heat especially with all the electronics and you also have the place to send that heat to (the cabin). Wonder what happens when it’s 40 degrees outside (C, not some crazy F stuff)
@JRP3
@JRP3 4 жыл бұрын
@@mgmacius When you don't need heat it gets routed to a radiator and cooled outside, if it needs to be colder than ambient air can get it then the A/C circuit kicks in to cool it.
@mgmacius
@mgmacius 4 жыл бұрын
JRP3 of course, but I wonder where is the breaking point where the radiator can’t dissipate all the heat from the electronics, battery and the inside. The radiator itself was not so awfully big, was it?
@JRP3
@JRP3 4 жыл бұрын
@@mgmacius I thought it was a fairly large unit considering there is no giant ICE to cool down. The electric motor/inverter generate the most heat but still much less than an ICE.

Absolutely agree that the automotive industry needs to move away from 12v, especially now that so many ICE cars use idle-stop , lots of electronics and electrical devices now requiring huge current output from the alternator, etc. Seems like it would make more sense for cars to use at least higher voltage systems, maybe 48V. I believe even a mild hybrid system would be beneficial, even if it was just like GMs old BAS system, since that could aid with the stop-start, allow for high voltage, etc. A higher voltage system (probably higher than 48V) could even allow for electric AC systems and resolve the issue of interior cooling during idle stop on hot days. It would also allow for the reduction in the size of wiring and electric motors for high torque applications like steering assist, cooling fans, starter motors, etc. I'm sure you know more about this than I do, but I suspect the reason that Tesla (and other manufacturers) haven't done this yet is because the entire industry is design around 12(ish) volts. 12v motors, control modules, electronics, etc won't work on 48v (or at least, not for long.) You could make a 12v motor work on 48v but it would require additional circuitry to step down the power output. Building a car around a 48v system would require them to use either custom built everything that requires electricity or sourcing all of it from a different industry that uses 48v (if such an industry exists).

As a fan of "The Expanse", when I saw your title, I was wondering why a Tesla needed a Point Defense Cannon, a rail gun like device that fires slugs at very high velocities. Perhaps some defense against deer attacks against your car. expanse.fandom.com/wiki/PDC

Sandy - Fascinating.. But to be honest I am rather shocked by the complexity of all the plumbing. It seems to be a rats nest of tubes pipes pumps and valves. It may have a million mile battery but will all that plumbing last very long? Seems to me it will require flushing servicing frequently and replacing before long. Is it durable enough?

A manufacture like Ford could make the bridge to 48v, but Tesla is just breaking into the world of being a major manufacture and I would imagine the cost creating new connectors and re-engineering non-inhouse parts would be costly. In my experience, suppliers are often your biggest handicap. It is interesting that 48v hasn't become more widely used, I see it in the marine industry, albeit haphazardly, but not much elsewhere.
