The process of some random shoe model using Autodesk Fusion 360.
It's maybe too long of a process to be useful as a tutorial, but oh well... hope it's helpful for somebody somewhere.
EDIT:
The foot model that I used as a reference can be found here: grabcad.com/library/human-foot-1

Hello guys, This is quite impressive demonstration of a Fusion workflow. I want to ask its gurus for an advice. I’ve been working in Rhino 5+Tsplines for many years, got used to it a lot and find it a quite universal application. Yes it (Rhino) has some disadvantages as the absence of any construction tree and real weakness in filleting capabilities (so quite often I find myself exporting files to Solidworks and making fillets there, then export back to Rhino. It saves lots of time than doing fillets manually). But it was unpleasant surprise that Rhino 6 WIP did not support Tsplines anymore. So I decided to move to smth new. First what I checked was Fusion (since Tslpines moved there). At first, I was amazed but then the euphoria gone and frustration came. It is not that “design as you go” as I thought. It is not that hybrid modeling I was looking for. No osnaps (can’t imagine working without it), no decent move/rotate/scale with ref points as in Rhino, Tsplines are not that powerful as they used to be - no chamfering with keep distance option (only percentage), no keeping edge, no inserting edges perpendicular to other edges and so on; no way to directly modify edges or vertexes. So I thought it is not what I was after. Then checked Solidhinking and again got disappointed. But with this video I think that maybe I should look into it more deeply? Knowing basics of Solidwoks, good knowledge of Rhino, AutoCad, Tsplines it took me few hours to get the hand in the Fusion basics, but I am missing too much tools here, too much to feel comfortable. What do you think, can Fusion replace Rhino making the process of modeling as easy?

Fusion is more of a parametric modeler like solidworks or inventor, it doesn't do generative node-based stuff. I've seen a lot of people request this feature on their website, so who knows... maybe they'll implement it in the future.

Excellent tutorial. I was surprised nobody asked you this question. You seem to be an expert with both Solidworks, Fusion 360 and probably other programs. Ive been using Solidworks for years now and compared to fusion 360 - it seems very expensive. Basically Im wondering will there be a transition of users moving from Solidworks to Fusion 360. Do you have any opinions on this. Would you recommend someone like myself learning fusion. I teach solidworks to my students but if they wanted to do some design on there own - they would have to purchase a licence of Solidworks for nearly 4000 dollars. Its quite steep compared to Fusion. Thanks....Tim
@unimportantprojects
@unimportantprojects 7 жыл бұрын
Not sure if I have a clear answer for this one, but here's my opinion: For freelancers, contractors, and startups, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a shift in users to Fusion, simply because it's a fully capable tool at 1/10th of the cost (or free if you qualify). It has become the only thing I use for personal/hobby use for this reason. For people already using tools like Solidworks in the industry, I doubt there will be a major shift any time soon... Getting companies to adopt new software and workflows is like pulling teeth. In these situations, companies might use Fusion as a supplemental tool for using features like t-splines or the new mesh editing tools for 3d print prep. The reason I follow Fusion isn't just because of where it is now, but because of how active their development team is. The speed at which this software changes is quite impressive. That said, it is still missing tools that some may consider as deal-breakers; sheet metal tools aren't there yet for example. If you do decide to learn Fusion, you should find it quite easy to transition what you know from Solidworks... The base concept of parametric modeling is the same in both programs. You'd probably begin to feel comfortable with it after just a couple days. The same thing applies to your students; as long as they understand the fundamentals of how parametric modeling works, it should be easy enough for them to pick it up on their own.

Great workthrough, name notimportant! I bought a SolidWorks license a decade ago after completing my MA (had already used it professionally for 5 years beforehand as a mech eng). I haven't regretted it, in spite of Dassault mucking about with the pace of development, maintenance etc. However.... Nowadays I use SW for all freelancing work (I work with smaller design houses in the UK and they all seem to use it) but I am increasingly using Fusion for my own design project as SW refuse to add a T-Splines equivalent to the package for a sensible amount (how much for nPower Power Surfacing or the new SW Industrial Designer???!!). It's great for hacking up stuff for 3DP and I can always use the surfaces produced as a template for 'proper' (ha!) SW surfacing. I seem to remember reading that Dassault had a chance to purchase T-Splines before ADesk bought it. Whoops... (In an ideal world I'd have bought NX, but anyway...££€€$$) Rest of your comments seem entirely sound.

Hi Tim I'm a 3D modeling amateur, it's my favorite hobby. I used Solidworks for nearly a year before I discovered the wonderful Fusion 360. Moving on from Solidworks to Fusion is easy. Of course I felt some difference at first due to interfaces styles and options... I also felt frustration thinking that some features didn’t exist. Then bit by bit I discovered that they actually existed in a different way. The main reason I moved on to Fusion is the sculpt mode. Unfortunately Solidworks doesn’t have features for a really flexible free-forming that fusion has. And so, making an optical mouse body or even a car body is much easier in fusion. In the first 2 months of using fusion, I was still using Solidworks in parallel. Now I’m on the 4th month and I don’t open Solidworks any more. This was a brief description of my experience. I wish you good luck.

Karl Christian Otten There are a couple ways to do this, but it requires plug-ins or external software. The easiest way for Fusion is probably to use a tool called "exactflat", there's a free trial period if you want to try it, but it's pretty expensive for full time access if I remember - if you only want to do a couple projects with it, I think they have the ability to pay per project or day use that isn't so bad. Another option (what I'd usually do for flattening) would be to import step, sat, or iges into Rhino and use the flattening tools in that - they aren't as accurate as exactflat, but usually get you most of the way there. Another potential option, although a little challenging, would be to use pepakura designer on a low-res export mesh, then refine with illustrator... It's meant for paper, but I've seen people do some wild things with it. There are also a few dedicated shoe design packages which certainly give you accurate flat patterns, but they seem to be prohibitively expensive for individuals or small businesses. Honestly, if it were me, I'd get (or model and 3d print more likely) a shoe last, tape it up, sketch out the pattern, cut up the tape and do it old-school, this is how it's been done for ages and many still do it this way. Also, depending on how you work and which factories you're working with, they may not even want a flat pattern, it'd only slow them down, a reference and some definitions of materials may be all they really need... Remember there needs to be many different sizes, which means many different patterns, some factories will help you manage this. Sorry I couldn't give you a clear simple answer, but I hope it was helpful anyway.

@unimportantprojects

These are two different types of software for different purposes... Max/Maya results in a poly (mesh) model and is more for CG artists and animators, Fusion results in solid parametric models and is more for product designers and engineers. If you want to do computer graphics where the end result is an image, animation, or game asset, learn max/maya/modo/etc... if you want to do modeling where the end result is a physical thing, learn fusion/solidworks/rhino/etc. Given the variety of things I've worked on... it's valuable learning both.

@unimportantprojects
@unimportantprojects 7 жыл бұрын
The only ways I know of are not native within Fusion... There may be other ways, but these are what I would look into: -There is a plugin called ExactFlat that can create 2d flattened patterns; I've never used it, but looks fairly robust. -In the past, I've used Rhino's surface flatten tool for laying out fiberglass layers - it worked well for most things I tried. -Depending on your needs, you may want to look into dedicated shoe design software... these all give accurate flat patterns. Crispin Shoemaker is no longer available, but you can find others if you do a search. If anyone knows a better solution, feel free to share.

It's just a regular mouse, shift+middle mouse, nothing special. It's interesting you bring this up though... I had to battle with the orbit in Fusion for the longest time because it didn't behave like I was used to, but there's a setting in the preferences that allows for "constrained orbit" (instead of "free orbit") which can make things much easier [EDIT: I say that, but I don't think it was setup like that in the video... but I still recommend trying it]. Another trick I use (not sure if I mention this in the video) is when moving stuff around in edit form, I'll often switch the coordinate space to "view space" to refine the form from various angles. Hope that helps.

Should be reasonable to make molds and a last - 3d print the sole, make a mold from it, then cast some polyurethane or something - the flat pattern is a bit tricky - there is a fusion plugin called "exact flat" that can make flat patterns from surfaces, but I'd probably end up doing it by hand. Similar in some ways; with the t-splines plugin, Rhino is equivalent to the patch and sculpt mode of fusion with model history turned off. Rhino may be a bit more robust in the patch/surfacing area + gives access to generative design tools via grasshopper. Fusion adds parametric model history, parametric solids, parametric sketching, and a lot of other stuff so I prefer it.

Go to preferences, then go to the "Preview" tab (last one down), then enable "Mesh Workspace". The mesh workspace is still in "beta" mode but Fusion allows you to choose what "betas" you want to try or enable. I recommend enabling all of them.

I believe they have a free version that works with blender. Otherwise, as far as free renderers go, I'd probably recommend Cycles (included with blender)

You body which you are meant to trim might not be visible or might not be intersecting. Just check the body carefully

You can directly send this model to a 3d printer and have your own shoe ready in a matter of hours

Hello nni, i'm just stucked trying to trim the front part of the shoe at 7:19. It does not work as you explain. Can i share with you my Fusion file ? I really want to go to this tutorial until it's end. Thank you very much by advance

Gilles Carali Typically, if there is a problem with trimming, it's because the surface you are using to trim doesn't fully intersect the surface you are trying to trim from -or- the surface you are using to trim intersects other parts of the body that aren't supposed to be trimmed. If you still have trouble with trimming, I would check out m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKrTg3holqubnpY for approaches on overbuilding surfaces
