40+ inches already on the Lake Erie shoreline SW of Buffalo. That's high for December. 65+ inches (reports of even higher totals than that) already in some locations inland of Lake Erie (along the Chautauqua Ridge and SE). The lake is still in the high 30's.

The blizzards stopped in the 1990s on the East Coast. All warm Atlantic Ocean air is drawn inland first by any anticyclone before precipitation arrives like this weekend. It's going to be 61 degrees here and rain. And then the cold comes back and the sky's are clear. Every time.

So I would full heartedly disagree with that. I live about 30 miles slightly northwest of Philadelphia. And 2010 through 2013. I definitely remember several consecutive weekends of 12+ inch snowstorms.

Also 2011 and 2014. I dont remember what year it was but sometime in the last 20 years we had 2 blizzards 5 days apart. February 6th then February 11th. We in the philly suburbs had 50 something inches of snow in those 2 storms. There was no where to put it. The snow piles were around until May

I remember about 2 years ago Boston was getting snow rates of 6-12 inches an hour. I think people tend to just block out the fact that we still get terrible snow storms and focuses on the 1900s which I really can't wrap my head around because we get insane snow storm still but nobody talks about them and everyone calls them trash and this and that.

Perhaps the problem isn't current snow amounts it's how fast the snow melts afterwards. Is the one thing I can say is the 1900 snowpack would stay from December all the way through March. I mean depending on where you live, now it either melts the same day or melts within a week or two.

63 and grew up on south shore around Bellport. Ponds were always frozen for pond hockey as a kid by Xmas. Bay froze solid and was doing stupid stuff like driving cars on, iceboating, etc. that might have happened once or twice in the last 30+ years. Tides are higher and a lot of the roads to the bay flood at normal high tide. Wonder what happened?

The polar Vortex typically pushes the jet stream down south across the mid states. It's very normal at this point. Remember how bad Texas had it a couple years ago. The real snow for the NE happens 2nd week of feb through the rest of the month. It's uncanny how often it happens around valentines day.

So long as there's cold air in place in my neck of the woods (northern Mid-Atlantic), it'll all depend on storm track, which has been aggravating in recent years, to say the least. Also, the model that shows a a 3 to 5 day period of highs in the single digits and lows -10° to -°15 is laughable to me, as that just isn't a thing around here anymore, but I hope that model ends up being correct.
