Any time I suggest to someone to use automotive finishes in woodworking it is usually just dismissed or laughed at. Few realize how much better they are and how much easier it is to get a nice finish with and the durability is way better. Automotive clear is the best thing to use on kitchen cabinets. Much more durable.
@MattLaneWoodshop8 жыл бұрын

Hey Matt, your cabinet looks great and would love to give you some tips on the painting for cabinets. I have a cabinet shop. Sanding sealer will seal the grain in the oak plywood and the cut ends on the MDF . There is also a more dense MDF if you are having issues with that. I recommend Pre-catalyzed tinted lacquer for the finish. Not that the automotive paint you used can't work but the Lacquer can get so many sheen options as well as aging, distressed and other amazing wood working possibilities. Hit me up if you are interested in this stuff. Your work and detail looks really good!

Sweet build Matt. I was wondering why the sheet rock mud and not bondo
@MattLaneWoodshop8 жыл бұрын
+HCAC BUILD The reason I didn't use auto body filler is because I really didn't feel that it was necessary and the filler is much harder to sand. I felt that because of that reason it might give me trouble with the mdf being softer and the areas around the filler sanding away before the filler sanded smooth. Hope that makes sense! Thanks for watching!!

With ANY pneumatic sprayer (even lesser quality) you've GOTTA take the entire thing apart & clean it till water will run through clear. I'm a Set Designer, Lead Scenic Painter & I used to be an on-set carpenter. I've had my share of expensive AND cheap guns, but cleaning is the only way to get an even spray(like the gun is new again!). Hope this helps man! Cheers! ✌

MDF is worthless crap. 0 resistance to moisture. Drywall mud is not a wood filler. Use Bond-o or a real wood filler. Other than that nice work!
@MattLaneWoodshop8 жыл бұрын
+Mark DeWall A loser move? You realize Bondo is a brand right? I've been painting cars for the last 10 years, I'll put my finish beside your any day you want to. Why would you use auto body filler when you know it's harder than the MDF once hardened. There is no way you can get the surfaces to be flat and in the same plane.

A lot of people over do fish tank stands, building them out of 2x4 frames and then skinning them with plywood. It ends up being very unnecessary. You just need to take into account that the tank full will weigh around 8lbs per gallon. Which you did for sure that is a stout stand! And that finish is awesome, you can tell you're a pro!

@MattLaneWoodshop8 жыл бұрын
+Frank Ingram Thanks Frank! Normally I'd say Yeah probably, but when I primed the cabinet with a catalyzed hardener it seemed to also harden the mdf as it soaked it up and dried.
