I took a long break from MTG after Origins released and returned recently. I was flabbergasted to see modern had sanded most of the staples I used to both love and hate. Restoration Angel, Kitchen Finks, Celestial Colonnade, Gavony Township, Master of Ethereum, Aven Mindcensor, Qasali Pridemage, Linvala, Tidehollow Sculler, Remand, Siege Rhino, Voice of Resurgence, Scavenging Ooze, Vendillion Clique, Eternal Witness-the list goes on. Even whole decks seem to have vanished. I can’t remember the last time I saw Scapeshift or a Coco deck, let alone Monoblue Tron, Hate Bears/Death & Taxes, Bogles, 8 Rack, Lantern Control, Soul Sisters, Blue Moon, Dredge, and Elves. Not all of these were huge decks, and some of them are probably better off gone, but it’s really strange not seeing half the card base I grew up with obscure to a few Commander decks. The current modern format can really feel oppressive with how difficult it is to avoid certain cards despite a large number of alternatives existing.
@FaithlessLooter Жыл бұрын
You named three of my four decks in that list, of course I'm playing at more casual events though. Still nobody expects 8 Rack and I get quite a few wins from people not knowing how to play against it.

@@Greg_Ulmer It’s obvious that modern would change, but the point I’m trying to make is that, specifically after MH and MH2, the format was accelerated artificially to the point that even the strongest staples were rendered mostly irrelevant. The reason I listed so many cards and decks is not to wax sentimental like an old man, but to show how potentially unreasonable it is to have a small pool of MH cards knock out 8 years of meta. Not all of the power creep was caused by MH and MH2 obviously, but it’s a big elephant nowadays.

@jakecollin5499 Жыл бұрын
Theres several videos of content creators and pros playing with banned cards including splinter twin. Its pretty much unanimous from them that splinter twin is still crazy good. This is because its a good combo but the rest of the deck can use cards that have been printed since the banning like force of negation and subtlety (the deck used to play pact of negation, these cards are upgrades by not including the text, you lose the game.) You can comfortably splash white as well to include 3feri which essentially prevents your opponents from interacting with you combo. Cards like dark confidant haven't gotten better because the cards around them haven't gotten better in a way that suits it. When lurrus was legal dark confidant was perfect for those decks and hierarch fit right in but that got banned. It's entirely likely that something like this will happen again several times.

The biggest lie ever told is “invest the money once, and you can play a Modern deck for life”. Sure, Modern never rotates. But aside from staples of the format like Splinter Twin getting banned, the even bigger problem is that the influx of new cards is just as high as in Standard. Which didn’t use to be a problem, because most standard-legal cards weren’t competitive enough for Modern. But now the new cards constantly drive out the old ones. Modern is essentially just non-rotating Standard at this point. It still requires you to always be up-to-date with the latest sets. We used to play Extended back in the day, precisely because people at my LGS (including the store owner) did NOT want to always have to keep up with the newest sets. Which has become harder than ever, of course, with the absurd number of sets being released per year now. Where even full-time Magic content creators admit they struggle to keep up.

@dragunkiller360 Жыл бұрын
It’s a fun idea, but I think most people want to avoid closed formats because a lack of new cards means the top decks risk becoming hegemonic very quickly. Sure, you may have access to a number of decks that are not viable in today’s meta, but no shake-ups from new cards also means they also may never move in terms of ranking, power level, or influence. Yeah the format would likely swing over to agro decks winning for a bit, but, really, isnt that more fun for everybody then footfalls vs tron? #unbanskullclamp

The One Ring has supplanted basically all planeswalkers also. With a few rare exceptions, (Wrenn and Six, Small teferi, Minsc etc), it's basically always better to play 4 Rings than any of those old planeswalkers like JaceTM, Teferi Hero.

Basically, Modern Horizons created Modern 2.0. I have mixed feelings about it, but the current meta is fun at least. One I might have expected to see was Aether Vial. I feel like every time I get one out on turn 1 in game 1, it gets hit with Prismatic Ending. And the card is almost a dead draw outside of the opening hand. For one toughness creatures, I know Nikachu has basically deemed Silvergill Adept a dead card. I still run them for the card draw and I play a lot of Lords, but they do tend to get boarded out.

Not being funny, I genuinely think the majority of the Modern ban list can be unbanned at this point...and I DO mean some of the scariest cards too like Dark Depths, Cloudpost, and Hypergenesis. The format has the answers now for these cards (the MM2 Incarnations, FoN, Boseiju ect)...heck, they could bring back Twin and it would land in the format like a wet fart.

Maybe I'm just an old grinch, but I can't help feeling like they are openly taking us for fools. Years ago, they were creative and worked hard to bring different content without burying previously released cards. It's really sad when they print a new card with the same mana value as an old one and add an extra effect; very, VERY lame. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next couple of years I see new stronger fetch-lands with scry or some other bullsh*t, 4/4 two-drops with a couple of positive effects and no draw-backs. Now that "exile" effects are as common as "destroy", they'll release some sort of "unexiliable" static ability and, a bit later, a new kind of removal (maybe tearing the physical card apart, who know$). This is not "the evolution of the game", it's called "I don't give a damn anymore about the game and/or players, I want more money, I don't want to think too much or I won't be able to spit editions like a water sprinkler".

I kinda feel like MTG has reached a point where I don't like it as much anymore compared to the past. Even in limited it feels like there are too many cards that do too many things too well at the same time. In construted pretty much every card is either extremely undercosted or is just a overly solid multipurpose card that does many things at the same time and pretty much has no downsides. I miss the old times where decks and cards had vulnerabilities and downsides and denial strategies were a thing. Now every match is just a rush to who can bury the opponent first in card advantage and board presence.

I have to fundamentally disagree with the modern community that thinks these cards are completely unplayable tho. I've seen nothing to indicate that formats like modern are solved except when things like Oko happen. Outside of those times there's always room for innovation. For example death's shadow was a legal deck for ages before anyone figured out it was really good. Faithless looting was a legal card for ages before people started to piece together how broken it was. It wasnt even included in a lot of storm lists that ran pyromancers ascension. The way we understand magic shifts as the game shifts. Go ahead and watch videos of Reid Duke talking about how faithless looting was a fine card because its card disadvantage. You can see him talking about this like 2 weeks before the card was banned. Reid is a rock midrange card/resource advantage legend so as he understood the card at the time it was not as good as people were making it out to be. He just like the rest of us had to change the way we understood the game. The magic community is plagued by confirmation bias. This is hardly unique to us but it's pretty clear that a content creator's opinion can sway the community heavily. There's also some pretty shoddy probability and statistics being used to confim those biases. You know what another perspective is? Bob is like $12 right now. Liliana is like $15. Sounds like 75% off to me. I can assure you thoughtseize into bob/goyf into liliana is still going to win you a lot of games. Bolt Snapcaster bolt still does 6 damage at instant speed last time i checked. Snapcaster Counterspell still counters spells. To those that feel down about this, do me a favor and be a nerd again. Stop being swayed so easily. If you dont like all the new pitch elementals or the one ring or bowmasters dont quit. Innovate. Be the adventurer you once were. See that as the raid boss that it is and figure out how to beat it. Torpor orb anyone? Learn to overcome again instead of being defeated by literally anything that gets in your way.

This. As a homebrewer friends are constantly saying “why don’t you play this it’s winning right now”. I’m like part of magic for me is the creativity of making decks not just playing the game. Been doing it for so long, that I am a great deck builder where friends come to me asking for me to make a list with an overview of what they kind of want to play. It took years to become this kind of homebrewer. Sometimes it’s still challenging because a lot of analysis, play, and thought goes into making a list. On average it’s about a 3 day process just to get a solid rough draft. Then more days to refine. But still, I’m in love with that process.

I understand what you're going for here, but going back to playing old, out of favour decks isn't 'innovation'. Those cards have been replaced because the meta is just straight better, it outperforms them and punishes them heavily, bowmaster being a perfect example of that. It doesn't mean that people can't go for those old decks and statistically win some of the time, but those decks no longer make up a relevant play % for a reason, they aren't winning enough
@jakecollin5499 Жыл бұрын
@@SuperbFairy I wasn't suggesting people play an entire old deck. That's why I used the lurrus meta as an example.
@jerrywhat4799 Жыл бұрын
I don't even know what you're disagreeing with. Sure, innovation is still alive and new decks will still pop up. But this video was about objectively how cards have started seeing less play which can be statistically shown, not presumed but factually shown, and a brief explanation as to why they see less play. You can litteraly win games with a grizzly bear and giant growths, but just because you can doesn't mean there isn't better options that will win more CONSISTENTLY

These days, the vast majority of playable cards in the format have to either generate 18 different forms of card/board advantage upon playing them, be insanely undercosted (often free), contribute to a game ending as fast as possible within the rules of Magic, or some combination of all three things. Basically, if it isn't bastardizing Magic, it's very likely close to unplayable. Hard pass on Modern.

so what do we have now ? ... I was hyped when pioneer started but the format is so boring now and there are so few viable strategies

A lot of these cards were already on their way out the door before modern horizons. Cards like VC, confidant, and nacatl were already getting pushed out by Eldrazi, Humans, and the usual suspects that still exist today like Living End, TRON, and Burn. Some of these cards just never really saw serious play like Bitterblossom and Ancestral Visions so I wouldn't say they don't cut it anymore since they just didn't cut it in the beginning despite continuous efforts to make them work. I think some of the low hanging fruit missing from cards that used to be good/staples but were slowly getting phased out in recent printings would be: -Cryptic Command/Remand/Mana Leak: because counterspell didn't exist. Well counterspell exists so... -Lightning Helix: burn spell and even control/midrange decks used it as removal and survival. Now for burn there are better alternatives like skewer and vortex and midrange decks have a wealth of removal choices. -Tapped Manlands: now there are manlands that have the option to come into play untapped, have a lower investment cost with monocolor, and are a lot strong (den gives value, hive controls GY, hall haymakers, and lair does green stuff...we just don't talk about white). These are the cards I expect to have the lowest chance of coming back.
