It was actually this EXACT episode that got me hooked on Modern Family. I woke up late at night one night long ago...and this episode was on...I could never get enough of this show from then on. I've actually started buying all the Blu-Rays starting from season 1. I'm up to season 4 and counting...and of course I watch all the re-runs that come out every day too.

Not to sound dumb, but if thy were really lazy they could have just screen recorded the whole thing on a laptop which had data on it to make it look like Claire's own.

Basically you don't have full control over your material and production. The actor of claire could misclick and it would be harder for her to act simultaniously. One misclick and you have to redo basically 20 minutes of recording, even if you have an seperate laptop operator. Also the call recipients would have to play along perfectly no redos (altough you could crop in later easily) Other bonuses could be: No connection issues, no computer issues control over cameras, controlvisual content (on social media, so they dont have to create accounts and fill them with content) and most importantly. Full control over timing ( easier in postproduction) filmmaker want full control all the time. So they go to extrem lengths to get it and throught that deliver an amazing product. Sometimes its mindblowing Didn't want to sound know it all btw
