15-20 hours is the ideal for most games, I’d much prefer a new game+ to extend the lifespan of a game if I choose to go back, if it means the narrative, gameplay and graphics are kept high quality. For an FF style epic, I’m happy to go up to 40 hours, but it needs to earn that playtime. Games that don’t respect your time, I simply won’t buy them any more.

Games are definitely way too long and expensive nowadays. Most of the time gaming nowadays is spent doing repetitious tasks over and over to pad game time or have exhaustively massive worlds that are mostly empty voids where nothing happens. Games as a service is cancer to the industry. A service goes offline (like servers that run the games) and poof - bye bye multiplayer with friends or bye bye to playing the game at all anymore. The industry is in a very, very bad place today, but consumers refuse to stop consuming half cooked chicken and raw cookie dough for a hefty price. Literally almost every company in the video game industry today: "If the people are willing and dumb enough to keep eating up hot garbage, why change or do better? Gamers are stupid and will consume any pile of trash they come across. They pay us to screw them over. Bahahaha! Morons!"

I would even argue that games like Persona 5 Royal or Like A Dragon (Yakuza) series are surprisingly cheap with what they offer. Sadly, the short games end up mad expensive, which is why I am glad that I only paid 30€ for Ratchet & Clank rift apart. 70€ would have been a total rip-off and... yes, I platinumed the game and still had only like 30h. I would also argue that the variety was sadly not huge either... what was it, 7 planets? Man, sure they're long but the classic route with shorter but more planets was waaaay cooler.

Same here with Dread, it was that damn addictive that I started a second playthrough instantly after beating my first, and I did it entirely without thinking, didn’t take long to reach the halfway point and then I realised that I was on track to beat it again - and it was even better given that I’d skilled up considerably. Now that’s a sign of true quality over quantity to me! I’d often rather replay the same shorter games over and over than play a single game that is huge. Recently I played Alan Wake 2, and the first 12 hours felt great, the last 4 or 5 felt like they dragged a little. This is down to story/mission pacing and repetition, but it also brings to attention the time spent playing. Open world games mostly end up being over long too, as you address in the video, too much filler and 'stuff' to do that doesn't add to anything.

i think more broadly, the issue is A) open-world games being inherently problemy, and B) trying to appeal to too broad an audience at once. They are TERRIFIED that any player will be unhappy, so they try to please the long-game and short-game people at the same time, by putting in enough that you CAN keep playing for hundreds of hours, but making all of that very optional so the short-game people won't be sad. Just pick your niche and fulfill it. To me, the REAL problem with these long games is... it's really hard to feel 'done.' and if you actually HAVE done everything in the game, it feels... weird.. like this has become an every day part of your life, making tiny little slivers of progress toward completion, so once it happens, it didn't warm you up for it properly. Quite the opposite, the content tapers off, instead of building up for like, a congrats.

There are plenty of short games that exist in today's age, 50ish hours for FFXVI is short for a final fantasy game if we're being honest. I think all of the people complaining about the length of games just need to look outside of the RPG genre (Final fantasy, BG3, Starfield etc.) go play Stray, or Insryption, slay the spire, Hades, or any other shorter game and don't pressure these companies into shortening games that don't need it. Imagine if Larian thought BG3 was "too long" and cut 50% of the content?
@sawdust8691 Жыл бұрын
I'm perfectly fine when games are longer, but only when it feels right. And there are just too many long games. Unless the game in question is particularly fun or interesting to me, I just want it to end by the time I reach 25-30 hours. Thankfully most games I've played seem to end around this time frame or earlier. But man, after playing a massive game like Zelda for 100 hours, as fun as it might have been at times, it just feels so nice to play a game that is shorter and a more cohesive tighter experience. Most recent example is Armored Core 6. That game freaking rocks. It is non stop action. It only has a few mechanics but is in depth and basically perfect im what it wants to be. It takes around 15 hours to beat. And it also has strong incentives for more playthroughs with both story and gameplay. Before that, Hi Fi Rush. Like 8 hours of pure fun with a good story and characters that don't overstay their welcome. From all the games I've played through the years, I absolutely prefer quality over quantity. Even if it's one of the rare ones that have both, if the game is too big I just start not caring as much and will probably never replay it.

I loved Fallout 4 but learned to ignore "clearing out my quest list" and just went for the final kill. Elden Ring I played for 4 months and loved it but I couldn't beat it. An example of a short game that's still great to play is Stray. I hate games where to constantly have to gather loot- check every room- follow up on your kill to loot the body- craft, cook things. I did play No Man's Sky for a bit- and yeah- it's all those things. Some games try too hard to be everything at once and end up too exhausting to play (GTA 5, FF15...ugh dont get me started on that mess) cheers

Yes, I dont understand why these companies keep wanting to make long games that end up being played once, and not only that, they will also make a sequel to the previous game with a bigger map but literally the same thing. I couldnt finish Tears of The Kingdom because it was literally the same experience and gamplay not much different, I passed out on Spiderman 2 because when I saw it I knew it would've been the same experience as the first game, I couldn't finish Horizon Forbidden West for also the same reason. If I wanted to experience the game again, then I'll play the first game. I enjoyed playing 16 and loved the gameplay, but it was just stretching the story and adding boring fillirs to extend the game and dont even get me started on the side quests I'll never want to do that again it was so boring if I wanted boring side quests I'll play an MMO gamr seriously dont waste my time making me a fetch boy! I enjoyed racing the game more than my first run, skipping all cutscenes and side quests except chocobo and ending the game in approximately 6-7 hours! It was such a satisfying run. Then, I'm playing FF7 Rebirth with the same issue. I already played FF16 the game of side quests. Why would I enjoy doing that again? Rebirth didn't feel at all like the remake. I finished it and didn't have fun at all, unfortunately. The changes in the battle system mostly delay issues, and the boring side quests just made it a bad experience entirely it felt like a copy of 16 mimicking the gameplay of remake wasn't satisfying at all. I've been playing the pixel remaster lately and was having a lot of fun currently on FF4, and im just thinking about how my friend will react to me hearing spoilers about FF6 lol but aside from that these games are tond of fun and I'm enjoying them a lot!

AC Rogue is better than AC4 too. XD

> Too long to beat > Shows TOTK on the thumbnail > "What's going wrong? Maybe it's me?" Yeah, I bet it's the games which are wrong. Especially when you can beat the Final Boss from 40 minutes onwards.

Longer payments 👏🏻 Equals more time 👏🏻engaged on a subscription service 👏🏻👏🏻 I keep trying to point this out. Because yes, that’s what we’re moving towards. Or companies like Microsoft especially want us to move towards. Game Pass isn’t for impassioned gamers. It’s for casual players that can jump in and out of games when ever they want, which not to be offensive, is sending a message to devs from these types of players that they can get away with skimping on quality. Especially, when devs are pressured by publishers that content needs to be addictive, not fun. Why? Publishers want people glued to that subscription model without realizing that’s what’s glaringly happening. So bloated, dlc loaded, mile wide, inch deep games pumped out under crunch and then turned into live service so the game never ends and CEO’s can feel good milking a title for all its worth. Meanwhile, the devs attention is being split between the live service game and the upcoming game. A dev literally can’t devote their full attention on their next game if live services are involved and if their studio is small. But then theirs also management issues that stifles creativity with larger studios. No matter what the conditions for creativity have been absent for years for a lot of devs and perhaps that’s why everything feels so samey and why hardly anything new is innovative. We’re in a creative drought and if you look around, that most media these days.

Too long and repetitive af. I would rather play a shorter game, especially when the game play is repetitive af.

i dont think TOTK is a good example to use for "taking too long" you can beat this game the moment the tutorial is over granted its not ideal its still possible

final fantasy 7 takes 50 hours main+side 16 takes 57 main+side. side missions are irrelvant if the game is good. red dead 2 a game that is a top 10 of that decade has boring hunt quests with mediocre side content of you just helping someone not die or finding some random thing yet its amazing story makes up for it because even if the side content sucks the main story can be amazing

i hate long campaigns tbh. prefer 6 hours ones I'm older than most of you, and this impatience for padding, or things getting samey, only gets worse. some of the "good examples" everyone cites annoy the hell out of me with their padding. I just gave up on forcing myself to end games. when they annoy me, i drop them. it's that simple. i got to chapter 10 of plague tale requiem, loved the game, but it was getting stale 2 chapters ago. so i dragged myself through it to finish the game just to learn there are 7 more chapters. I just stopped playing. no way. i've been through enough shit already, just let me have a W and end it ffs! It was the same with ratchet & clank. loved the game, but dropped it right at the end. this one i'll never resume because i loaded an earlier save, it overwrote my main save and i lost 3~4 hours of progress. i had done all the things to fight the "final boss", both characters were heading there already. my progress was at 65% completion or something, but i'm assuming it only goes 100% for completionists since that felt like the end of the game. But redoing those 4 hours? nope, bye game. it's been fun, but too long. As someone who has played all sorts of games extensively, i COMPLETELY lost my stamina to play a game hours at an end. i usually stop after an 1 hour session. if i play 2 hours, i already feel like i wasted my day and get super tired. so a 40 hour game will take me MONTHS to finish. that's just... no. i don't want it.

I disagree that its a problem since there's still variety. We get bad long games (Starfield) and good long games (Elden Ring, RDR 2). We get good short games and bad short games. I think some of these new games are way too short while being too expensive for what you get. I mean look at the new Spiderman games. You can beat one of them in like one or two days. And why would I pay 70$ for Spiderman 2 when I can get a game like Elden Ring and for 40$ which is a way better, longer and a replayable game. Yes I know that it came a year or two before but why would someone eho doesn't have either want to buy a 70$ two day one filled with propaganda when you have a god like game like Elden Ring
