Corporate greed has hollowed out gaming and made it sterile and soulless. AAA games take years and hundreds of millions to make and they're rarely any good, overworked devs who were forced to make games they didn't want to make in order to keep their jobs are laid off anyway and the the industry is therefore drained of talent and creativity. @@ssz28envyI'm with you on DLC. I didn't agree with it back when it first started, and I still don't agree with it now. When you buy a game for £70, it should be the full game, not the majority of the game with future DLC already in development before the game is even released. I mean, now people aren't happy when a game isn't going to have DLC, which is a completely backwards way of thinking about it. Larian came out a day or two ago saying "No BG3 DLC!", and everyone's crying about it. That game had a definitive beginning, middle, and end, but people are complaining that they can't pay an extra £20 or whatever price DLC is now to play a bit more of the game they paid full retail for in the first place. People these days are letting game developers walk all over them, and in return they're happily throwing more money at them to grind their heels into their groin a little harder. People need to stop throwing money at these greedy game developers, but they won't because people are morons. Anyway, rant over. I'm going to go back to my latest play through of the original FFVII. This mentality has really kicked off in the last few years when more people have braodband. Games before mid-90s were created because they were fun. Developers wanted to make their vision a reality. Of course there were a few cash grabs, Atari was the worse. You had Sierra and Lucas Arts kicking out adventure games with a fun story. Then there were the days where id Software and Epic Megagames were competing against each other with online multiplayer with Quake and Unreal Tournament but mostly to push the hardware to its limits, take advantage of new tech and to make great looking games with great performance. Most played both because they were unique experiences and id and Epic welcomed it.

I think in terms of bad practices such as releasing broken games at launch, having intrusive micro transactions, and unnecessary DLCs, yeah it’s the worst era in gaming if you look at it from that angle. However, if you’re a fan of JRPGS, single player games, and just immerse open world games then I think this is by far the best era of gaming if you’re a fan of those type of games. It really just depends on which angle you’re looking at it from because some of my favorite games of all time have released in the past 5-10 truth be told.

When it comes to ‘woke’ I agree, in 90s/2000s nobody had an issue with female leads like Buffy or Xena Warrior Princess but now like Pavlovian conditioning with modern media if there’s a female lead in western media 99% of the time they’re pushing ‘woke’ talking points like intersectional feminism, gender theory, critical race theory and that kind of thing and it’s just boring. Like, the protagonist is a super smart lesbian who has a mastery of STEM and who’s also really good at everything else with their only weakness is their confidence due to the patriarchy and toxic males or something, it’s so boring and tedious that it’s conditioned me to not consume that media from Hollywood or California or wherever unless I’ve read more about it but if it’s an anime or Japanese movie with a female lead then it’s completely different.
@hotpockets6910 ай бұрын
The problem is you white dudes don't actually know what woke means and just apply it broadly to anything that doesn't have a straight white male or straight white cast at the center of the story. Horizon Forbidden West: y'all cried when it was revealed that Aloy is a lesbian. TLOU2: Y'all cried over Joel, your white male savior character, being killed off and replaced by a woman and cried that a trans kid was in the game. Forspoken: y'all cried because the game had a brown woman and manufactured selective outrage over the "cringe" narration (y'all never say a word about the absolutely cringe and corny commentary in super hero movies though). GTA6: game isn't even out yet and y'all are crying because it's possible that it won't be as overtly offensive, non-politically correct as previous games were.

"Modern" gaming, it says it all. Half baked live service games and concepts that are old, to much thrown at us and getting stale and boring. Huge graphical and performance power changes that make new things possible that weren't possible, are just gone. As from the HD era of gaming it became modern gaming and games aren't evolving into something new anymore. Backlog has all the nice looking games we want these days and personally graphics were interesting but reached a plateau for me with the HD era. Gaming these days is just more of the same. Been there, done that.

I'm betting they're hosting the servers on a cloud infrastructure whereas back in the day it was dedicated hardware. Around launch time, this cloud service was probably scaled up fairly aggressively. But as the launch window passes and people are playing online less, these servers are likely getting scaled down a lot.

The problem is that games are supposed to cost over $200 but we gamers would have a foaming in the mouth fit, if they tried to charge us a fair price 😂. The problem is actually our own expectations as gamers are actually a bit unrealistic, we expect better and better performing games every new generation. In 1994 it took about 50-80 people around 2 years to make a AAA tier game for the latest consoles of that time. They would charge $50 for the game. In 2024 it takes 200 developers 5-6 years to make a AAA game on the latest console. They charge $70. If you just factor in inflation from 1994 till now, games should cost $120, butbif you factor in the additional time cost and manpower. Your average game, like say the newest COD or whatever, should cost you $250.

@@boscotheman82 actually the cost of cartridges were not as big as you'd think in 1994, they were starting to be phased out, they did play a role in driving up costs, but it was less than by 1994 $10, i believe around $7 per cart, which means there is $43 still unrelated to the cost of cartridges, lets say $40 for arguments sake, $40 back in 1994 would be $83 today. This is JUST ON INFLATION. This doesn't include the double the amount of development time and triple the amount of staff or over heads to even make a video game.

@@boscotheman82 even if games were $30 back in 1994, with extra development time, with the extra staff needed to make the game and with the additional inflation from 1994 till now. You would STILL be paying $150 for your video game if the cost was priced fairly.
