Can I ask why you guys never carry a larger broom? I know some graves the leaves ect. Have made like a carpet but the ones that aren’t too bad just seems like it might save you guys backs! Just curious! Love the video and it is odd that such a recent burial but it’s so abandoned. So sad..... if there was a little flag marker at each field stone grave like the little orange markers it’d be amazing to see how many really are there! Looking at the video when showing a large area it’s a little hard to see and imagine just how many!

It seems unbelievable that a cemetery that has a burial as recent as 2015 should be so neglected and forgotten. The homemade headstones are really touching. That cemetery was a lot larger than I 1st thought. Keep Safe ❤Keep Well ❤

About 20 yrs ago, a local cemetery was shut down due to questionable business practices concerning burials and cremations. It's closed to burials but family members still go to maintain the graves of their loved ones. As the living family members grow too old, move away or stop caring, that cemetery will eventually end up like this one. Sad

Miah, ain't that the truth! All these folks crying: "Somebody should do something!" I wonder when's the last time they were in a cemetery, family or otherwise? These aren't urban chemical-grass cemeteries where families pay for long-term grave maintenance. Rural cemeteries depended on the local church or families to maintain them When the old churches and families die off, it's not like that mysterious "somebody" comes along with a tractor to keep the area cleared. The Roberts and Cody ARE "somebody" working to at least uncover some of the forgotten graves and history Too bad there aren't more of them. This reminds me of the Find A Grave people who have dozens of photo requests for family graves, yet have no grave photos taken for others among their credits. "Somebody" else is supposed to do all the work.

@@lucygray6162 you are correct about care of cemeteries. I have found that most young people aren't interested in their own families. Thank God for Robert and his friends for taking care with strangers' graves. It used to be a Southern thing to care for your family plots. I alway hope that a family genealogist that is researching and asking "where are they" will happen upon one of their family members on Side Step videos and take over the care of their family cemetery. I have my "Wet and Forget" and soft brushes ready to work on grandaddy's section. I just have to wait for cooler weather and coordinate with the church as they only meet twice a month. My grandfather is buried in a church cemetery in rural Alabama. It is maintained by the church. Like me, the church members are getting older. I had a discussion with one of the church ladies the last time I was down there about what will happen in the future. It doesn't just magically happen. So I am trying to decide how I can help. Right now I send money (and not nearly enough) to the church. But I realize that when those precious church members can no longer do it, then who will. Another story of a rural area thinning out as young folks seek work in the city.

The cemetery where quite a few of my dad’s maternal family are buried used to have a church, & I didn’t find that out until recently. Found an 11-page PDF from Maryland Historical Trust on MD’s government website from the 1980s & was last updated in 2003. There was what’s called “the Old Quinton Schoolhouse” that was a single room structure from around the 1870s and a “Quinton Methodist Protestant Church” that was directly beside the school. “The Church and school have been either moved or torn down, but the cemetery remains to mark the site.” Theres even a picture included of the schoolhouse after it was moved to a farm near the site!! A shame the buildings are no longer standing, it would’ve been cool to see. Thank you for the work you do!

It doesn't take long at all in the South. The heat, humidity and rain makes everything grow twice as fast. The thorn bushes can take over in a year, and kudzu...well, we don't even want to talk about that nasty stuff. Pine saplings grow into trees fast enough to be harvested many times over a human's lifetime. You spend most of your life fighting back against the growth, even in a neighborhood.

When small family operated funeral homes go out of business or have no relatives to take over, the land and often the records are lost, destroyed or misplaced. When in Brunswick, GA years ago I found many abandoned graveyards. CSA stones could be traced but when people moved from small towns, moved to the larger cities or military or GA Power took the land for no tax payment, the graveyards were inconvienent and not important by the counties, utilities and state. Local church records often get lost or the church is closed down. Church property gets over grown and burial maps lost.

It saddens me to see a cemetery with recent burials to become something so neglected. I noticed one born in 1951 same year as myself. I thought what if that was me & my family let it get like that. That I had become forgotten & unloved. It cements in my mind my resolution not to be buried & have my ashes scattered into the sea. My father & grandparents are buried 100s of KMs so I can't visit. My mum died young & my aunt owned her grave & their fathers. There was a time limit in the cemetery which is up. She has their ashes & I have no idea what has or will happen to them. My aunt is nearly 100 years old & has dementia. All this has influenced my decision. I wonder if those that have been forgotten, knew what would happen would change their minds on how their bodies would be disposed off. Thank you for remembering if only fleetingly those buried. My opinion only but the county or state should be ashamed of the neglected state of neglect. 😭😭😭😭😭😭 Australia 🇦🇺🐨. PS I'm sure we also have cemeteries in the same neglected state. 🥺😭😭😭

Poor families, both black and white, would put a field stone head and foot stone to mark the grave in hope to come back later with a proper headstone. On some graves you will find a headstone that was placed later. One of the things with this you can identify children's and adult graves.

I'm shocked how many abandoned grave sites there are in Georgia, who owns the land they are on and whats stopping anybody today from being buried in them? burial plots are very expensive where i live.
