Dealers and manufacturers make more on repair service than the original sale.... and when you trade it in the cycle repeats.

Old stuff was made to last as long as possible. Now things are built to last a certain time period then be replaced / thrown out. The companies that built things to last are all out business now. Mechanical pumps would timed to 1/2 speed vs the engine.
