00:00 Modern Interior Design Classics Introduction
The modern style of interior design was a hallmark of the mid-20th century and it still remains quite popular today. With its emphasis on clean lines, functional materials, and practicality, it can represent the apex of both comfort and beauty, and it’s incredibly appropriate for gentlemanly spaces.
01:16 The History of Modern Interior Design
decorating your space in the modern style doesn’t mean appointing it like the headquarters of a James Bond villain or like the Brady Bunch home. There are a number of more subtle modern design touches that can be effortlessly implemented in a gentleman’s home, but at the same time, we do recognize that the modern style can be polarizing.
So, whether you want to go full Mad Men with your interior design or just add a few modern touches, we think that there’s a lot to love in this versatile style.
05:01 Characteristics of The Modern Style
The modern style actually encompasses several different sub-genres of design, but through all of them, there are a certain amount of fundamental principles.
Modern Design Pieces for Gentlemen:
06:20 1. Barcelona Chair
07:58 2. Eames Lounge Chair
09:53 3. Knoll Sofa
11:31 4. Pop-up Bar
12:55 5. Bar Cart
14:11 6. Arco Floor Lamp
15:40 7. Houseplants
If you do choose to use house plants in this way, the modern style favors deep, rich greens rather than excessively vibrant colors. So, we’d suggest using leafy plants rather than flowering ones. As such, here are a few suggestions.
** Fiddle-leaf Fig Tree or Ficus lyrata
** African spear plant or Sansevieria Cylindrica
** Split-leaf Philodendron or Monstera Deliciosa
** Creeping Fig or Ficus Pumila Variegata
** ZZ Plant or Zamioculcas Zamiifolia
19:41 8. Modern Art
21:39 Buying Modern Interior Design Pieces
We should note here that famous modern art pieces purchased new tend to have relatively steep price tags anywhere from $3,000 to $15,000. So, you should keep this in mind and decide whether this is truly the right decision for you.
Famous pieces of modern furniture can be somewhat expensive secondhand due to their popularity, and, of course, you should also keep an eye out for forgeries. Helpfully though, there are guides available online that can help you to discern a fake from an original.
Guides available for free online will show you how to discern an original from a fake:
www.artzolo.com/blog/fake-art...
www.mentalfloss.com/article/5...
We hope we’ve given you some good ideas on creating and constructing a space that works well for you. As Charles Eames, himself, put it: “The role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests.” And after all, who visits your own home more than you do.

I'm one of those who think that modernism definitely did humanity a favor. One of the things I like most about Mid-Century Modern is that it's a reflection of the philosophy of the time: the preference for practicality and functionality without losing sight of an elegant and light aesthetic that undoubtedly adapted much better to the lifestyle of twentieth century society. It's still a very current style. I have an Arco lamp from Barcelona Designs and I'm in love with its features. Great video!

When we talk about the modern interior, we should not forget Mr Ingvar Kamprad and his company, IKEA. It made many modern interior items accessible to large masses.

Yes, but unfortunately Ikea is becoming more and more "mainstream", apparently to sell to the broader market. I've also noticed that less and less of their once incredibly made products, have been cheapened up and are now being manufactured more in Asian countries and not Sweden, like they were to begin with.

As for me, Scandinavian modernist designs are the more elegant due to it's more warm, human-like appearance and shapes in contrast the cold European tube-syndrome (probably triggered some gentlemen) designs. One of my favorite designers like Alvar Aalto and Hans Wegner, especially Wegner, treat wood with enormous respect and let it show it's great qualities, what I really admire. Aalto, as a good example, has made beautiful shapes but also used always birch wood as it grows like mushrooms out of the ground in Scandinavia, which is more cost-effective but also much eco-friendlier then the expensive (and often endangered) exotic woods and steel used in works of the typical European cannon. Yes, I like wood more then metal but still have respect for the (social-minded) mid- and post war European modernist way of thinking and aesthetics. Ater all you've done a great job, as always, and mentioning the top icons is totally fine and not a mistake for sure, but still, it would be just a bit more professional to mention also the more 'unknown' (or at least overlooked by the majority) design pieces. Once more, great respect for you and your efforts and keep the gentleman subjects coming!

Yes I like the Eames lounge chair... Or a similar design with easy to clean leather. But you only want 1 because a standard sofa or couch is better for reclining, and can seat 3 if needed. It would be nice if the footstool had adjustable height. I like somewhat masculine decor. Luxury Decor gives me the stressed feeling of: "Gee, I hope I don't break something."

Good video. Nice intro for those not too familiar with design (which I'm betting is most guys). One pet peeve, though. The bar cart with the lamp (13:06) has the lamp's power cord just hanging out in space, flapping in the breeze. Not a good look. (in the computer/electronics/gadget age it's unfortunately quite common.) It doesn't take much effort to run the cord down the leg of the cart and make it much less visible.

What kind of 17th/18th century design, specifically? There's some variety in that range, from baroque to rococo and classicism (and of course the regular furniture normal people actually had). But mostly you find that in late 19th century or 20th century, factory-made revivalist versions, which can be a very different deal. I've found that sticking to more modern (namely jugendstil and functionalism) styles is much more practical, since there's actually stuff available for us non-millionaires who can't afford traveling after Christie's and Sotheby's.
