As most, if not all of the Rosicrucian current, Levi had a Christian element in his philosophy/practice; just not the Christianity of the popular churches. He always strove for a unification of Freemasonry and Christianity, trying to get the Roman Catholic church to be open to esoteric and Hermetic thought.

Seemed like an inordinate amount of detailed preparation to go through to get a spirit that may or may not have been Apollonius to tell them some pretty mundane things about people he and the mysterious woman knew, only to get a morbid and unhelpful answer. Someone who could endanger his own life, and the lives of others while trying to perform Abramelin occult ritual. Just like Crowley, who was a drifter living at the expenses of others, Levi died in extreme poverty. So much for the myth of the powerful magician....

Except for drawing the Baphomet and the inclusion of tarot inside the whole system of "occult sciences", I struggle to see where he was original in any way. The theory of astral light come from the medieval arabic magic of the Picatrix, the system of sympathy and correspondances come from late antiquity magic and is very common in hermeticism, his perenialism was already the dogma of the Renaissance esotericists, etc... Like always in modern esotericism, his toughts are so confuse and baroque that's it's nearly impossible to distinguish clearly what could be their core and main points.

Fascinating video (I do recommend double checking pronunciations before recording haha, but ignoring such minor quibbles, very good info & visual aids). It’s fascinating to me that a lifelong socialist & spiritual esotericist (someone so mentally liberated from most of the hegemonic ideologies & axiomatic assumptions of capitalist society; dogmatic, orthodox religious doctrine; & so on- someone who clearly was capable of critical thinking & questioning deeply rooted presumptions about the world- would still fall so prey to the related ideologies of nationalism & imperialism that he would believe France would be the salvation of the whole world (literally the same nonsense that colonialists & imperialists have used to justify every conquest from the “civilizing mission” of the British empire to “manifest destiny” in the American empire. Internationalism & socialism go so hand in hand, it’s hard to fathom how a committed believer in socialism & universal emancipation (even an early, relatively naive iteration of utopian socialism) would simultaneously hold these ideas in his head- but thus are the contradictions of 18th century Europe. Thankfully, by the time Marx’s historical materialist conception of class conflict would become widely held among leftists, it would become clear that anyone who pits working class people against working class people across National/racial/ethnic/other lines are working AGAINST the interests of the workers & only serving to “divide & conquer” them on behalf of the ruling class (who are the ones typically disseminating nationalistic propaganda in large part for this purpose- to prevent us from uniting wround our shared class interests, against our shared antagonists, worldwide, the way ruling class elites do (they certainly don’t drink their own koolaid when it comes to organizing & conspiring with their fellow billionaires from other countries, which gives them a MASSIVE advantage over workers when we’re nationalistic & squabble amongst ourselves on the basis of which side of an artificial line the ruling class drew to limit our freedom of movement we happen to have born on)… Unfortunately, a lot of people would fail to recognize the fundamental conflict between nationalist ideology & socialism in Germany after the nationalistic fervor following their defeat in WWI, which would lead to the rise of the Nazis, “national socialists” who essentially were just far-right fascists, but exploited the terminology & iconography of socialism in order to win the support of the working masses for what was ultimately just a corporatist, fascist, genocidally racist tyranny… The Nazis’ economic program was literally the origin of the term “privatization;” they criminalized all independent labor unions such that the only phony one people were allowed to join was an organ of the Nazi dictatorship; they worked closely with corporate owners from IG Farben to Volkswagen & merged state & corporate power on their behalf; not to mention literally just purging the country of all real socialists, communists, Marxists, internationalists in general, authentic labor organizers, & labor-based political opposition very broadly… Essentially, they (along with Mussolini & Franco’s fascist dictatorships) would become the archetype of fascism as a blatant & unambiguous means by which the ruling class simply uses unfettered state & mob violence to crush the left & organized labor brutally, silence all political opposition to their dominance, & re-assert their class rule whenever capitalism collapses or the labor left becomes too strong & starts to win better terms & wages for workers at the expense of billionaire capitalists’/corporations’ profits. It can be anything, because these people don’t actually have anything to do with the poverty & suffering of average workers- it’s JUST because of capitalist profiteering & ruling class control of state policy… But if they can pull the workers who otherwise could be revolting against them & instead get them fixating on black people, Jews, Chinese or Mexican workers, feminists, or whoever, then they can basically play act at doing a sort of bourgeois revolution (actually just a coup of reactionary elites against more progressive elites, whose interests continue to be served either way as long as they shut up & don’t resist the dictatorship) without actually fundamentally changing anything about the mode/social relations of production, or the living conditions of workers (often they shred social safety nets so conditions only get way worse for poor workers), or anything else meaningful that socialism- the actual dissolution of the class divide & creation of a worker-owned economy- is supposed to resolve.

Such great minds throughout history....and then there was Eliphas Levi whom was the farthest thing from them. I don't criticize his field of study, just the man himself and his interpretations. Gold pass through the ages while being tarnished with dirty hands on each passing. His were filthy. Truth can enlighten, but it can also be dangled in front of others and also be used in contradiction to its very principles. 'Satanic ritual abuse, or SRA, is the abuse of a helpless person (most often a child) in rituals performed in the worship of Satan. These rituals, as reported by survivors, include physical violence, sexual violence/molestation, or emotional and mental trauma, e.g., forcing the subject to watch violent or disturbing acts. Ritual abuse has also been reported in association with other religious cults outside of Satanism. Satanic ritual abuse is often associated with the “Satanic Panic” that occurred in America during the 1980s and ʼ90s. A book called Michelle Remembers, published in 1980, told the story of a woman who suffered satanic ritual abuse as a child. Or was the Satanic Panic a witch hunt that resulted in false memories, conspiracy theories, unfounded allegations, and unjust imprisonments? The general consensus today is that ritual satanic abuse was not as widespread a threat as many had alleged. There is perhaps no subject more inflammatory and frightening than the issue of child abuse. Protecting children is a natural human impulse, and when children are abused, we instinctively feel the degradation of the society where that abuse has occurred. The idea that child abuse for the purpose of devil-worship could happen in our own society-in our own neighborhoods-is especially horrifying. This fear and horror, plus the sensational nature of the subject, have likely led people and media sources to amplify the prospect of satanic ritual abuse. That is not to say that satanic ritual abuse did not or does not occur; there may well be genuine instances of satanic ritual abuse among the false or distorted reports on record. But it’s doubtful that an underground network of cultic child predators exists. Many individuals have reported being victims of satanic ritual abuse, and it is not up to media stars, social commentators, or bloggers to say whether or not those experiences are real. Satan is a liar and a murderer (John 8:44), and committing ritual abuse is well within the realm of possibility for those whom he influences. Christians live in light of Christ’s victorious work on the cross (Colossians 2:15) and do not fear what Satan can do. If you or someone you know has been a victim of any kind of abuse, including satanic ritual abuse, please report it to local law enforcement. Also, seek help from your pastor or a counselor-someone you trust. God “hates the wicked and those who love violence” (Psalm 11:5, ESV). He is “a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day” (Psalm 7:11, ESV). People who abuse others will not go unpunished (Proverbs 20:22).'
