I think the Deck Build packs are cool for like a Theme event. Some friends an I usually will get a box each, then call what deck we'll be building. We'll then pass around cards for that strategy and duel with what we built using only what came out of those packs. It's pretty fun, and each of the decks feels like they work pretty well when compared to each other. I always figured that allowing some outside support could help, provided that it's generic extension and search, as oppossed to adding something like Baronne or Zeus, but we haven't tried that yet.

I always liked the idea of the Smogon tier lists in Pokémon. If an archetype's being used by too many people in the advanced format, it's banned in the tier under it. Rinse and repeat until you get an extremely low-power tier where all archetypes can find their place. Yes, even War Rocks.

As usual awesome talk Paul. I felt that the closest Konami came to addressing these types of issues was in duel links where some of the abilities required you to have a certain amount of archetype cards in your deck before you can use the ability. Maybe make archetypes a little more strict like this for balance? Just a thought.

A big part of why many people play Yugioh is how freeform it is. You can make specific powerful cards with non-generic requirements that only the archetype its from can pull off but you can't go too far without tying us into classes or colors like every other boring game out there. Its a matter of balancing the cards against generic levels. Stuff like Verte should be Predaplant specific with pred materials required. Just want to point out that specific archetype stuff doesn't make things better. It just makes everyone play the best archetypes instead of the best decks, made from the best archetypes combined.
@Malister23 Жыл бұрын
We basically have heart of the underdog in master duel where every master duel event has a different banlist and most of the times you can play different decks in each one but still people hate it cause it still has one or two best decks and everyone plays them which is what will happen in tcg too so I don't think this will solve the problem with decks not seeing play because they are bad

@bleack8701 Жыл бұрын
A direct quote from people at my cars shop. "Amazing defenders and traptrix will be 'fun decks' so I don't know why they're bothering to print them" and everyone laughed and agreed. Then they proceeded to talk about tearlements as being the only thing that's relevant nowadays. When I said I was making a branded deck the reaction was "it's kind of competitive, but you're better of with tearlements". They didn't even consider that I said that I'm making branded because I think the lore connection between the archetypes is fun. When the local shop is so super competitive and dismiss anything that's not the best it's difficult to organize something more casual or find someone that just wants to have some fun playing the game. That's why alternative formats have a hard time in my area, and if the shops weren't hosting nobody would play them. And even then, goat format has about 5-6 people playing, so it's about 1/4 of the people that are at the shop at that time. Goat is mostly played by a couple of hardcore cost players that reject modern and the rest are just people that sign up for the packs or they're bored.

The core issue with Yugioh which keeps people playing competitively is that the game follows an anti fun formula: • new set releases • best new archetype is only available in that set (Tear/Spright/Kashtira) • no deck can really compete with said archetypes • said archetypes are high rarity & short printed • people get priced out • people who can afford the decks say that people complaining about that need to suck it up, leading to gate-keeping. • people leave the game.

I think you guys as a community need to create formats. They don't have to be officially recognized out the gate to be popular either! Commander was a fan made format, primarily made by judges who wanted a use for their years of accumulated bad cards and something more casual to do while traveling for higher level events, and it naturally spread through the community before being officially recognized by WotC and supported with products. The actual commander rules are still handled by a fan-run committee but also heavily emphasizes rule 0 for local playgroups to ban or allow whichever cards they like and modify rules as they see fit. And commander is just the tip of the fan made format iceberg. Others may not get as popular as commander but it's still not too hard to find people to play with. If the advanced format is stagnant I say don't wait for Konami to fix it or create a new format, do it yourselves! Konami may even come to recognize it and officially support it down the line.

I loved how you mentioned pure Drytron as that is what I created. I didn't add in any of the fairy cards since I wanted it to be a more of a pure deck and I love it. I wish Konami would say you need to have X amount of cards from the archetype in your deck. I see so many decks on KZbin that are made with the bare minimum amount of cards from a particular archetype (like Drytron) but they still call it that archetype. It's not a Drytron deck when 85% of the cards in your deck are fairy cards. (getting off my soap box now)
@Totallythebestname Жыл бұрын
I agree, i honestly love building pure decks more despite the fact they aren't "tournament viable", it's more fun building decks like that playing around what the deck is supposed to do, not turboing your way to victory and making it not fun for your opponent.

Could see it being enforced at tournaments, but not KZbin certainly. Also I hope you don't mean enforcing a minimum archetype card count per deck. I like making dumb things like my Jank Shaddoll Deck with a P.U.N.K. Orcust Stardust and Invoked engines.
@SgtKickass926 Жыл бұрын
No offense, but that sounds like a terrible idea. Enforcing some arbitrary limit, wouldn't have made pure Drytrons any better and would just limit deck construction for no reason. Say what you will about Sprite, but the fact that it had Level/Rank/Link 2 synergy led to some cool tech (Wind-Up Kitten in 2022 is based). One thing I do think Konami needs to stop doing is making Boss monsters (especially Extra Deck boss monsters) so damn generic. That way you don't have any wierd restrictions on Deck building, while also not just turning an archetype to summon Extra Deck Chungus turbo
@WavemasterAshi Жыл бұрын
I've asked this same question before, and I never really get an answer in terms of how you actually implement this. Let's start with question 1. 1) Does the Extra Deck count also? 2) What about Side Decks? 3) You go to the Side Deck. Do you have to do a deck check right away to make sure that it's still legally allowed to use the archetype? 4) To what extent would that restrict things? (E.G. Would this tunnel people into saying "Okay, which archetypes fit this rule but still let you turbo into Accesscode?")

It is sad that the majority of the playerbase only plays tournament yugioh. It means unless a card is pushed, super powerful, or a staple, it will never be looked at. That means trap cards and normal monsters just will never see play. And the only cards people will play are tournament meta relevant cards. That is super sad. 4:44 just kind of wanna add, I think it is quite generally accepted 'fun' when you and your opponent play decks that on same tier/powerlevel, tier3 vs tier3 is fun for casuals, tier1 vs tier1 is quite fun for competitive players. The purpose of banlists and formats are for this reason imo, so that there's no tier 0 or deck that just not on same powerlevel with any deck. Banlists take care of tier 0, but to separate tier1/competitive decks to the lower tiers, indeed formats are needed so I wholeheartedly agree with you. Well Master Duel trying things in that direction with their events and recently theme chronicle
@momiwantcake Жыл бұрын
I mean that is really the issue when you power creep the game to this high of a level. It eventually becomes harder and harder to keep power creeping and making good but also creative archetypes. The game has just gotten out of control competitively and would need a pretty big overhaul to make more archetypes viable. Unfortunately, a lot of players would get upset if that were to happen due to price crashes but eventually Konami will have to do this to keep the game alive. Hopefully the people working on balancing stuff in Konami won't mess the game up too badly when they do decide to fix it.

I think the problem here used to be less visible. I started going to locals before HAT format and people brought nearly everything to the table. Were there clearly better decks? Yes. Geargia, Mermail, and a few others come to mind, but the power level was a lot lower. As long as your deck had a decent setup turn followed by some way to capitalize you were fine. Nowadays like you said that bar is so high that 90% of decks (including new product) aren’t even able to compete.

Yugioh needs to formalize the tier system and create separate formats around it. For example, let the tier 1 format be the open format, which would work just like the advanced format currently does. Then a have tier 2 format with its own banlist specifically designed to let other decks shine competitively. This hypothetical tier 2 banlist doesn't need to be that different, all it needs is to include the most problematic cards from the top decks in the tier 1 format.
@jpem4664 Жыл бұрын
Magic has a lot of things Yugioh is unable to do/missing out on. Commander is the big one but Booster drafts for instance are also popular and they also do those "Jump Start" boxes where each booster pack is half a deck based on a theme and each player picks 2 packs. These things always get shut down when suggested for Yugioh because Yugioh archetypes are so rigid and can't function when mixed together outside of very specific engines. The divide between competitive players and the more casual players isn't going to go away unless Konami puts effort into other formats.

Examples could be: you can normal summon twice, when ever you play a card you flip a coin and if you win then the card resolves, skip your standby phase, etc…] I think these could be fun if enough intrest is shown

And later support actually helped them out (Strenna from ROTD as well as POTE with Rikka Princess and Rikka Konkon) And then another case for me is Exo(r)sister. DECENT and you could tell that with the right support, it could be viable to a degree. They also had great in house Rank 4s and access to OTHER generic Rank 4s so at worse, they had nice toolbox options. The new support is genuinely great and pushed them up to a higher place where I don't get made fun of for playing them. XD I guess that as much as I like Mikanko, it feels too much like a power crept GUSTO deck. And I LOVE Gusto as an archetype. Lol. It sucks that it's basically the Ritual Oohime Mikano as an engine piece in other decks and isn't even decent on its own.

Don’t know how it would work on a larger scale, but I’ve always liked the idea of having “Battle Box Tournaments” - a tournament where all of the decks are given out to players, having been properly balanced for fun against one another.

Honestly, it feels like the complaints are that the game isn't producing more broken stuff. With how hard it is for the casual player to get into the game now, I'm fine with them starting to tone things down.

As a mtg player and old school yugioh. I would love a format that limits the cards. So if it's my first week back into yugioh I don't completely crushed when I play some one with a perfect meta deck. Drafts with in a set would also be alot of fun.
@lefteron6804 Жыл бұрын
I started playing in August, build Labrynth. Mostly getting my ass handed to me. I've heard of a shop in my town that runs a "fun format". Basically they have their own banlist. I've been meaning to give it a try, though unfortunately I haven't heard the best about the place, both about the establishment and the playerbase.
@itsMakkura Жыл бұрын
Honestly it’s better to be left up to card shops, like you said everyone has their own idea of how “balanced” yugioh is. So it should be up to the shop to take notice what is taking over to prevent it next time. And the people participating could directly communicate with the shop to voice their opinion.

The problem with Yu-Gi-Oh isn't that something is missing. The problem is the mentality of a large portion of the player base. If a deck isn't competitively viable, it's crapped on, even if the point of playing that deck is to have fun. And that's more of a problem with the players. Not everyone wants to be a competitive player, and those who just want to have fun don't really get that chance
@eeveemaster8902 Жыл бұрын
yep, had a judge comeplain and name players for being competitve but then would laugh at people for playing fun decks like cyber dragon (my deck) aand would then go and get floo
@LunaticKD1991 Жыл бұрын
Gee I wonder why the player mindset could possibly be that way. 🤣 Oh wait maybe it's because if they don't play a deck that specifically shuts down other specific decks they get told no and that they can't play. The game itself is unbalanced no matter how you slice it which ultimately results in decks that don't win being ignored. No one wants to spend tons of money on new decks every 6 months to a year just to be prevented from playing the game and losing.

I want to extend this. Solemn Judgment syndrome. These people THINK certain decks aren't good, not because they checked, but because someone on KZbin said so,
@Darth_malefic Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t call this a solution to this dilemma but in the yugioh 2010/2011 world championships ds games they had a format/style of play that allowed you to have 1 banned card in your deck and I thought that was pretty fun

That's why I said they should create cards laterally rather than vertically. No reason to powercreep when you still have so many unexplored concepts. They need to implement a hard once per turn rule. This kills ftk decks. Monster negates need to go hand traps included. Just traps negates. Give every type a rota. Introduce more generic type /attribute support. The existence of b.l.s. means any light or dark monster is at least useful for that. more bls can make every monster virtually playable. Retaining the banish for summon condition and adding a different but equally powerful effect like the original. This will raise the floor of ygo making all decks at lower tier at least being able to chaos. And that's before we get into how it would help diversify archetype decks buildings too.their will be to many options to homogenize. And the most skilled players will raise to the top.
@Bunsense_Gaming Жыл бұрын
I agree with this video. I like playing mid power decks like witchcrafters and galaxy eyes BE AND DM. But it's only fun If you're not playing against big board 4 monsters all with negates no extra deck monsters
@MrCraiggy Жыл бұрын
I think one approach would be maybe the MtG approach where, if a certain deck/combo takes up a high majority percentage of space in the meta from organised play events, WotC review the issue and will usually ban key pieces/individual cards causing the flooding of the meta. It then allows for more variety in the meta and lets a wider range of decks thrive.
@0rnami Жыл бұрын
The first thought I had was to create a new sort of "ban list" that doesn't ban single cards outright, but rather particular combinations of cards? That way, you can have your crazy modern Yugioh cards that have been powercrept to all heck, while still maintaining some semblance of balance. Example: players may play Pot of Greed, but only if their deck does not contain any cards beyond Pharaoh's Servant or something.
@1FMAlchemist Жыл бұрын
I think what may help is altering the banlist to be something that we see in speed duels/duel links. Putting some cards on a pick 1 basis could open up more strategies and limit others. Perhaps more cards could come off the banlist that way. As for new sets I am hoping to see some powerful spells that make normal monsters as viable removal options to disrupt these 10 minute strats the meta likes to play.

A think a good alternative format idea, "Hindsight Format," would be cool. It's the modern banlist, but you can't use cards that have been released less than 6 months ago.
@arthurbellon9446 Жыл бұрын
I think it's lacking identity, PLAYER identity. For how many years has it been the same exact story? KONAMI creates a bunch of archetypes > one of them dominates the meta > they ban the foundation stone of said archetype > they create new wave of archetypes > repeat. Also, each archetype feels like a script, a linear code. If A then do B. If B then do C, and go on and on and on (15 minutes turns). There is no player agency. I mean AT ALL. Everyone is just blindly dumping money on konami for their newest, most powercreep cardboard-printed "code". There is no room for players to brew their own. And with yugioh's lack of resource system, without no real restraints in how you special summon, play spells, recursion and search outside archetype conditions, any kind of good generic effects that would be made for people to actually brew, will inevitably be exploited into degeneracy.
@brendanmcnamara8648 Жыл бұрын
I’m not a magic player, but MTG seems to have solved this problem. They have 3-4 different formats that people play. Would be so cool to have something like a draft format in Yugioh. The fact that Konami hasn’t added other formats is probably because they believe it would not be good for business to do so.
@gary97keren Жыл бұрын
I feel like the best way to do lower tier format is like how smogon do it with pokemon. Just base it on representation, that way it's objective. Like the archetypes that don't go past X% represntation avg in past 3 YCS or sth goes into the lower format. Then if there's actually enough interest then repeat that process to create more lower tiers. Can even customize banlist for each of those formats. We don't even need konami, if big creators like Team APS do monthly tournaments using those formats there'll be enough interest for sure, but probably needs to do it one of those online simulators first then if it gets big enough maybe it'll kickstart a new format :).

Points are the way, Konami should start issuing point values for each card in each new set and slowly roll out point values for every other card, even banned ones. This way you can have 1000 point formats or 100 point formats, and cards like Pot of Greed could come back at a cost of 50 points or more when something like an Apollusa is like 20 points and a BEWD is 5. To get the idea of scaling. This way decks that do not rely on OP archetypes and have low point values could have more room for other OP cards like Pots of Greed in order to boost their consistency and play-ability.
@HighPriestFuneral Жыл бұрын
That would be difficult to make work in real life, but digitally that is a great idea! It would encourage a good deal of experimentation. This could work as a legitimate alternative format. If a committee wants to come around to assign points to each of the 10,000+ cards. But it's the internet, I'm sure there would be a group with enough devotion to do so.

A banlist will just result in the best few things that didn't get hit being the clear option. I think the way to do it is to make a list of ALLOWED cards rather than a list of banned ones

I don't think we specifically need publicity for that kind of stuff, i'm a relatively new player (been playing for about a year) and i've been going to locals for some time now, and my locals is very competitive, lots of tearlaments, lots of spright, you name it. But i like that that's what the tournaments are for, hell i've even won one playing weather painters! i've been there a lot and played frindlies with a guy i barely knew, and he wiped me with spright and i was playing box of friends, then i asked "can you play a bit of a weaker deck? this one can't compete" and he obliged, and we both had a lot of fun. These ways to play in my opinion are also super fun, but they don't need dedicated tournaments, and konami support, we just need to find a person willing to play stuff like that together, for fun, and if you go to a local card shop for tournaments or otherwise i guarantee that you will find such people!

Pyro still waiting for something to pull them out of the basement. There isn't any unifying core with which you can build off of besides Volcanics and Royal Firestorm Guard. And RFG is an iffy card since it's just recursion. The rest of the Pyro stuff boils down to burn or banish/destruction.

In my opinion, modern YuGiOh is missing the casual audience appeal. You can't just sit down and play the game effectively unless you have done research or hours of tinkering. Also, a lot of archetypes are just not up to the current level of play, and there's decks that can stop players from playing the game. Seriously, wtf? As a casual player I've found ways to have fun, but there's times I have to stop playing because I got tired of the other player deciding if I can play lol.

My local group has sorta done a home brew banlists so we can play viable with each other. 1. Advanced Format (for when we're fighting in locals or YCS or something) 2. GX Format. (Advanced ban list. + top 30 most used cards in the last 3 ycs top 8 are also forbidden) 3. 5ds Format. (Previous 2 banlists + nothing that has gotten support in the last 2 years) 4. Zexal (first two 2 rules + no generic engines or boss monsters allowed. Meaning, all boss monsters have to be either connected by archetype or require VERY SPECIFIC materials They're all supposed to allow us to play our older cards or the more "table trash" cards of things we like without having our decks get mollywhopped by each other

Just do what smogon does with pokemon tiers. Yes I know it would OBVIOUSLY be more complicated to actually implement, I mean i know yhat it would be nigh impossible to seperate every card, but it would be funny to see celtic guardian become a meta threat.
@aceguy1234 Жыл бұрын
I've always thought there should be similar usage based tiering like Smogon does with Pokemon. It would be harder certainly with "archetypes" instead of individual cards but I think still generally doable. Just blanket banning any card that has the name Tearlament in it in a lower format would work fine even if technically the weaker Tearlament cards don't see top level play.
@agentslink6133 Жыл бұрын
Not that the game needs more rules, but a action limit per turn would help a lot with the decks that can play there whole deck in one turn. Instead of be able to play cards tell you run out of plays, you would only have ten card activation per turn. I think it would make for a better back and forth, instead of the game taking half a hour too be decided with in the first couple turns.

As a casual player who enjoys a wide variety of archetypes, I can definitely feel this. One of my favorite archetypes is the Elemental Charmers/Familiar-possessed stuff and those cards fucking suuuucks competitively. And I'm not a big fan of when you basically "have" to throw in a really strong archetype to make the archetype you actually wanna play sorta good (like putting branded with dragonmaids or adventure engine into... whatever adventure fits into I guess lol)

Under appreciated or sometimes ignored archetypes isn't something new and I do agree that it's due to the way Yugioh is played when it comes to the advanced format. If sealed played has showed people anything it's that the lower end stuff can offer some fun gameplay when they are paired against other lower end decks with similar power levels. When it comes to a place it's the same as all of the other lower end decks go, casual play groups. Me and my friends are a perfect example, we don't play in tournaments since we know these decks wouldn't stand a chance and instead we just play amongst each other with archetypes that we find fun. At the moment I'm currently playing Vampires, Nordic and Gusto.
