I don't see what everybody's so worried about. The mortar was definitely too damp but I think it'll be just fine, it wasn't that bad. The pre-plan was definitely better than the top but I personally think it'll be fine if someone doing wet beds for 17 years. Secondly, all the weep holes being siliconed I never even saw on the video. I saw some silicone and looked like around the top part of the drain after it was bolted to the bottom but that shouldn't matter. The weep holes are further in so as long as he didn't literally silicone those specifically I don't see what the comments are all about. I thought he actually did a great job especially with the framing and the pouring of the pan with the folded edges. I do that myself but I'm not using a Schluter pan so there's no seams. That's great, framing was great, he used chicken wire to reinforce the pre-plan, I thought all in all it was nice install. Maybe a quart less water next time in the mud and he's good to go

Could have done a tiny slope into the shower on your shower curb for that extra A+ credit. Could achieve it with some 1/16” tile spacers on the outside edge of one of the gaps in the 2x4s.
@TonyVM7754 ай бұрын
As a Tile Contractor this is tragic not going to lie. The silicone under the liner is correct but the silicone on top defeats the purpose of the rocks being for drainage. You covered the weep holes making your preslope useless. The Deck mud was to wet even for the pre slope and I’m not even going to mention the final slope. All in all we all start somewhere and in your case you’re better off spending $400 on a schluter pan than spending $250 to do it this way. Best of luck.
@tyrelirwin4 ай бұрын
you gave a lot of examples of what is wrong, but not why it is wrong. what will the net result be?
@TonyVM7754 ай бұрын
@@tyrelirwin The weep holes being siliconed will result in excess water being absorbed by the deck mud every time they use the shower. Making it smell like mold and eventually leaking due to standing water being present. The deck mud being to wet makes it less strong and it will eventually crack and crack grout lines on the tile floor and walls from movement.

Don't want to rag on you Mike, as most of your other work is fantastic, but this shower is likely to have problems down the road. As another comment said, blocking the weep holes with silicon is a big no-no in this kind of system, and those funky corners in the liner may give water a way to wick into the wood curb and rot it out. There are plenty or great tile and construction professionals here on KZbin with excellent content on how to do one of these the right way- and it ain't easy even though they make it look that way. Plenty of other waterproofing systems for you to consider, so I'll agree with the other commenters who advise you rip this one out and re-do it after you do some research and consider what other options might be better. You'll get another video out of it and us DIYers can get the benefit of your mistakes. We all make them!

What was done incorrectly or what could be improved?
@kyleaguiar34133 ай бұрын
Most steps were done incorrectly. The biggest issues were siliconing the weep holes on the drain. This is a "water in water out" system. Water that makes its way under the tile is supposed to drain under the mud pan, run down the pan liner and into those weep holes, then onward into the drain. With the weep holes blocked, you're just going to have stagnant water sitting under the tiles. It will discolor the grout and possibly tile, and cause major mold issues. Also, his "dry pack /deck mud" was wayyyy too wet. It's supposed to look like damp sand, not play-dough. It really does not need to be pretty as it's only taking on compresional force, but with that much extra water, it probably shrank like crazy, and it's probably going to crack and delaminate as too much water can was out the Portland cement in the mix (it's ~ a 5:1 sand / cement mix, so you really only want enough water just to activate the cement). I'm all for learning by trial and error, but the fact that this is a house flip irritates the hell out of me. The updated shower will surely be a selling point while the unknowing people who buy the house are going to be paying a good $10-$15k minimum to get it fixed correctly within a year or two. If this was a video of him vlogging his own house project and looking for feedback, I would not support any negativity, but hacks like this perpetuate shit workmanship (the dude has no clue what he's doing while confidentially misguiding viewers) and also might as well be robbing the new homeowners while also telling them to go fuck themselves. @@jbichl

Can you tell me where he siliconed the weep holes? I didn’t see that part. If the mortar mix was too wet and it had more cure time would it work? If he followed the directions on the bag and added the amount of water the manufacturer says to how can that be bad?
@jbichl2 ай бұрын
@@JoeSlaughterJr I believe he cut the silicone part out after posting.
@Chris-of6xmАй бұрын
I too did not see where he's siliconed. It looked like he had a little silicone underneath the upper part of the drain where was bolted to the bottom part. A little silicone around the outside of that shouldn't be a big deal though the weep holes are further towards the inside of the drain so I don't see what everybody's talking about. I thought he did a pretty good job actually besides the mortar being a little too damp

One time i pulled up a shower pan like that and they literally had a bunch of shims under the drain like he did but between the liner and they pushed the membrane upwards and all the water was standing all along the outside of the drain all the way to the walls, literally over an inch of eater across the entite floor that was unable to get to the weepholes !

You did not property put nail guards for all the electrical wiring in the walls. You don’t put mortar against any wood surface. The drain isn’t correct either. You didn’t the water lines either.
@cameronbarber37684 ай бұрын
Edit: he did have mortar against wood around the edges, but I can't be for certain how big of an issue that is. 1. He didn't put mortar against any wood surfaces, he used it above the wire mesh that was on top of the tarp paper and then over top of the membrane. 2. The drain is sloped as it should be for that size of shower and installed correctly. 3. The water lines aren't going to move so he didn't need to mess with those at all. Even if he did he still has access behind the blocking he added to make any adjustments. 4. Also there wouldn't have been any need to add nail guards below the mortar line but above there should be but it's not too late for that.
