Quick question , where can I find a super outdoor antenna like the one you show at the beginning of the video???
@ModernDogos
@ModernDogos 3 жыл бұрын
@@MarinesGardens That's just a out door rigged antenna. It looks like a 70 USD, 8 or 10 db antenna from Amazon on a solar panel pole. It is used to plant a miner at a remote location far away from your house. A good antenna for me may not be a good one for you. It all depends on where you live and what is around you. 10db antenna may be the best for me if I live in a rural area but it will be the worst antenna for someone lives in the city.

Hmmm...maybe. Respectfully, I have more than 20 years of RF link design in unlicensed spectrum (900meg, 2.4, 5 gig). Angle of incidence (the angle at which the RF waves hit the window) counts for a lot. Most non-tinted glass (reflective tint) is pretty transparent- on the order of 2dBm or less of loss per window pane, but any angle greater than 20 degrees off the window will increasingly reduce the amount of RF energy that makes it through the glass. Range between your miner and the other hotspots also count for a great deal- the formula of path loss as the square of the distance is an average over the entire distance. The loss per given unit of distance is higher at greater distances. Also, where both ends of the RF link in the first Fresnel of both locations also counts for a lot. There's more to it including glass thickness, and post signal bit recovery, but this might suffice for now. Your chart of occlusion value is helpful but does not account for range. RSSI measurements per site are what's required but not likely to be done by the average Joe. Absolutely agree with your premise that an indoor "put it by the window" approach is no comparison to an engineered outdoor RF deployment. Hope this is helpful and is respectfully offered. Thank you for your channel.

I live in a condo, can't put an antenna outside. It would be better to have the antenna go through my walls rather than through a window and window screen, right? It came stock with a 2dBi antenna, which is probably ass. I got a 6dBi antenna coming in soon, I'd think that'd improve my hotspot a lot?

Great video! I do want to say that there are people who are taking this network seriously enough to go out and do the work to find the prime locations to build the network in their local area (almost identical to the one you show in this vid) For me, I have no intention of hacking at all. I'm just approaching it as a business and an investment in something that happens to be a passion of mine which is light physics :) keep up the good work!

This is an interesting primer...... Initially, I was going to place this behind a window..... But now, I'm thinking about standing it on a base atop an 8-foot high ledge in the living room (beneath a vaulted ceiling), away from windows, electrical, and air ducts...... The signal still needs to permeate through drywall, the wood above the attic, and tile roof.

Any opinions??? I live in Spring Grove Illinois, in my area most other hotspots are southeast towards chicago, there are a good amount of them about 20 miles from my house in the same general direction. The elevation gradually goes up in that direction going towards the city. I'm wondering if an 8dbi antenna would connect with some of the hotspots that are 15-40 miles away b-line. Also, where is the best place to buy antennas for helium bobcat miner? Thanks for the great videos Modo Tech

very nice explanation of signal loss on indoor antennas. the simple and most effective thing to do is place the antenna outside. You will see a night and day improvement as long as you use very short cable, or super high quality cable. no lmr-240 please
@ViezeVingertjes
@ViezeVingertjes 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the situation though, got one place setup where i had to use LMR-240 for 10 meters even (33ft?) due to the route it had to follow (pre-drilled holes, tight corners etc), but combined with an amplifier and a filter, it made up for the cable loss and overperformed in the end. Sure, using straight up LMR400 would've be cheaper (400 is actually cheaper then 240 in here and you wouldn't need all the extra hardware...), but it's quite situational.
