Both sets of my grandparents used iron skillets and pots. I was shocked when I received a skillet for a shower gift and everything stuck to it!! My grandparents could slide food around and nothing stuck! I had no idea it needed to be seasoned! The assortment of iron ware I have today is Lodge pre-Seasoned from Cracker Barrel . The only hiccup I have had is the morning I found my skillet in the dishwasher. My daughter thought she was helping! A kind a sympathetic neighbor took it and brought it back to life!! Until our next visit....keep up your content...I never know where you are taking me! ❤😊

When we downsized, I gave family members over 30 pieces of cast iron that I found at sales and rescued. I always used steel wool and salt to clean the ones I found or a drill with a steel brush attachment. Then washed in a hot soapy water oven dried and oiled and left in the oven overnight.

MY PARENTS WERE MARRIED IN 1934 AND THE ONLY WEDDING GIFT MOTHER SAID THEY RECEIVED WAS A CASKIRON FRYING PAN FROM A FRIEND OF DADDY'S. THAT PAN STAYED IN THE FAMILY UNTIL I COULD NO LONGER PICK IT UP BECAUSE OF MY HAND BEING HURT. I GAVE IT TO MY SISTER IN LAW. I TURNED 82 TODAY AND STILL WISH I COULD USE THAT PAN.

If pans get really cruddy with a lot of burnt on grease, they can be thrown directly into a fire and left for a while and then bring them out and give them a light scrubbing and they will come out like new. I put mine in my oven when it's on a clean cycle, and it's great.

Love it when I find your video has downloaded in the morning. What a way to start my day!! Cast iron can be scary to clean and use. I have glass top electric burners so I rarely use as it scratches so badly. But we do use outside for fish frying and deer frying. I have never watched a video that takes me through the whole process of cleaning and curing. Thank you for that. Good Afternoon Jessica, i enjoy watching you do your chores and when I saw that pan i thought oh boy that's going to take awhile. WOW you did a fantastic job without having to do alot of hard work. I thought it was so wonderful how you said you still loved Wyatt lol kids just don't understand sometimes about taking care of things I'm sure he will remember this and hopefully it will encourage him to learn to take good care of things like that he should watch you do your cast iron the different ones you have that way he knows exactly how to take care of them so something like this doesn't happen again. He is such a handsome young man that has manners to boot that's a great combination many teenagers wouldn't be as helpful around the place like you have shown him being especially with your Christmas vlogs . That shows he was raised by two wonderful parents that have took the time to be hands on with him and the patience to show him in a kind way how to do and act without screaming and belittling him . I have seen so many be broken by their parents not treating them the way they should be you and Aaron have done a wonderful job with your children. Sending you love and prayers and hoping you all are doing good and Aaron isnt getting overworked and that the two of you are enjoying your evenings together. 💛🙏🏼💛🕊️💛🫂 P.S. I wanted to thank you for the beautiful Christmas card it was so lovely your's was one of two i received this year both from creators. I wish more people would get back to sending Christmas cards again i miss that hopefully you will be able to do that again next year . I sure appreciated it.

As for seasoning my pans, I would dry with paper towel and season with veggie oil and stick in a hot oven for 10 mins. I have two deep dish skillets, one flat iron and a 17 inch paella pan. Thank you for sharing your method of seasoning your cast iron. I use cast iron both in my kitchen and also outside. My normal method of cleaning all of them is to sprinkle a couple tablespoons of kosher salt into my pan while it is cooling down from cooking. I then scrub it with a nylon scrubbie then a paper towel. I brush any excess salt from the pan and I’m done. If someone burns some food in the pan, I’ll wipe it out as best I can, heat 2 inches of plain water in it and let it simmer for 10 minutes. I then dump the water and clean it with the kosher salt. I then put it back on the stove to dry it then I’ll wipe it down with a tablespoon of canola oil. Whenever I’ve actually had to fully season a cast iron piece, I do it on our grill outside as the one time i tried to season in my oven I smoked the kitchen! I’ve seasoned all my 3 legged cast iron Dutch ovens (i have 4) that we used when camping-now that we can no longer camp due to medical issues, I use those Dutch ovens on a special steel table that my Hubby made for me to use outside. I can build a fire right on the steel and cook in my Dutch ovens on the coals. All my cast iron ware will pass to my youngest son when I’m gone along with the cast iron ware I inherited from Hubby’s Mom when she passed. Hopefully they will continue to be passed down through the generations along with my favorite recipes.

Once I even cooked a fresh peach pie using my 14” DO.

Great video Jessica. I love my cast iron and use it daily some pieces are over 100 years old and I have never taken it down to bare metal either. I grew up learning how to take care of my cast iron from my grama. She used to use lard as well and wipe down her pan and stick it in her cook stove oven for hours, so that’s the way I did it. There are so many ways of seasoning pans, you just gotta do what works for you. I also do a quick season like you do. Thanks again friend 🌷🇨🇦

Over the years, I've had cheap pans, expensive pans, trendy pans, and everything in between. But I came back to cast iron at least 20 years ago. They are the healthiest to use because of no chemicals plus they add iron to our bodies. And, as you said, they are nonstick if properly cared for.
@jamiesmith383711 күн бұрын
They can add iron to our bodies? My doctor tells me all the time I need more on my diet and put me on iron pills! ❤
@LauraElliston-o6j11 күн бұрын
@jamiesmith3837 Yes, cast iron pans are made of iron, which our bodies need. The iron seeps into food as it is cooked. That's one reason prior generations didn't have iron deficiency (anemia) like younger generations who haven't consistently used cast iron pans. Similarly, chemically treated pans leak those chemicals in our food too, many of which are carcinogens. We should all be aware of what we eat as well as how it is cooked.

Circumstances put my boyfriend and I living in homeless shelters for two years. One of the places that we stayed in had room for about 25 people x2. A day shift and night shift. I have social anxiety disorder and that many people put me over the top. I would resort to scrubbing the pots and pans. On the odd side, i hate to do dishes!! How would you recommend cleaning and re-seasoning the grill-style pan? I found mine at a thrift store a while back and I don't know what its previous owner(s) put it through, but it keeps peeling up in shards between the grooves no matter how much I scrub 😬

I have a few pieces of cast iron and some mini ones as well. Do you just wipe the pans out after cooking in it ? Wyatt is banned from the cast iron for life. You look like you’ve lost weight. Looking good darl.
