Dear Andrew, the "amplify dampers" that you put in the door are a nice idea and we testet it once in a sound lab while I had to study physics as part of my main study which was geology/paläontology. Indeed there is only very little sence to cover the entire surface of the tin. We discovered in the lab at university stunningly enough that one only has ti cover 1/3 of the surface to get the "amplify-damping-effect" if the damping sheet (f.e. Alubytol) gets placed not at the edge yet approximately in the middle of the surface. Approximately positioning them is good enough. Below 1/3 of covering the damping effect goes fast down. Above 1/3 of surface cover the damping effect is not raising anymore, just the efford in time, money, work, material is. And of course with 1/3 is not ment the entire surface of tin of the car. It is ment the 1/3 of any surface in each field of free surface, that one is very clearly noticing be f.e. renoving the door's panels and looking at the door from the inside, noticing all the pillars, side rails and struts forming the edges of each area that then (all of them) have to be coverd by 1/3 by damping material to get the amplify-damper-effect to work out well. I bag your pardon if my sentences might have been to complicated or if they contain misstakes and/or flaws in grammar and/or orthography, yet English is not at all my native language. Sincerily, Stefan, Kiel/Germany

@AVRO filmvideo Actually we have to look different on your issue and on Andrews. Andrew runs his 4WD in Australia. Cold is no issue there if you do not visit the Australian Alpes in the high mountain area in summer or at all in winter. In addition to that we have seen him struggeling with his doors. There is no way to get more then 9 mm into the doors of that car. And it pends in how you insulate. If you go for plastic or metall sheets like for examble the aluminium based and very effective yet very expensive Alubytol, that you only go for sound improvenent. If you go for closed pore foam like Armaflex then 9 mm is enough to get the same sound improvement as with standart Alubytol. (The difference on the laboratory had been 1 dBa in favor of Alubytol.) And if you go for temperature insulation in a vehicle and you do not schedule to drive to the coolest place on earth in winter yet you do your ordinary living in a van all year through in Northern America, Europe or Australia, than the standard 19 mm that most closed pore foam is coming is good enough. The insulation only has to come bigger, if you go for nature, like sheep wool or horse hair or so. We tested that 2019 in a lab, since we have been curios about it before going on turning our 4WD-truck into an offroad-touring vehicle to travell all the way from Germany through Poland, Russia, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Timor to Australia in it. Unfortunately the zombiecalypses stopped us from getting all equipmebt needed and from starting the tripp, so we now are the slowest builder in the world, yet as a scientist I do now have more time to get the facts right independed from any intuitiv "gut feeling".

Hey Andrew, In Ronni Dahl's project lusy, Ronni ran a spreadsheet tracking weight and cost. As you're at the beginning of a new build, I think it would be interesting to do a similar spreadsheet with 1,weight plus or minus, 2, what it would the cost would be for someone not sponsored or supported, 3, rational for doing the mod, and 4 a retrospective, was it worth it which will be interesting particularly from a weight prospective.

Pro tip on door plastic/moisture barrier removal: Invert a can of canned air (like you'd use to blow off keyboards/computer) and spray in small areas. It'll freeze the tar strip and will pull straight off without getting gummy or stringy. Repeat around the door until removed. It'll be preserved and can be reused, it also ensures you don't over-pull the plastics and stretch them out.

Suggest having a couple of screws on the after market door pockets as when there is more weight, the door card can't hold on with the original plastic clips. Especially after water crossing the lower level of the card perishes over time. Also the driver's side door is open /close more than the others maybe Toyota did not want to put the pocket or to discourage drinking and driving. But on a lifted vehicle a pocket running all the way I often bang my knee. Maybe it's only me.

Really like the videos Andrew. I wish we could buy these here (technically we can, but can't use them on public roads). Just as a side note, some times when a manufacturer changes something on one side but not the other is due to crash regulations. Maybe they found that door pocket change on the passenger side (left side) didn't work for the drivers side because of the position of the drivers feet on the pedals during a crash, or it could be that they didn't want to do it because they would have toget recertification and they didn't want to.

It’s good and it’s bad. It’s good Becusse you only add what YOU actually need. It’s bad because it cost money to do so.

@@dunk1 only stupid people spend money on all those things though. At the end of the day, all you need is a steering wheel, cruise control, and ac.

Terrain Tamer ?

@@kromey111 I've put the 700Kg Terrain Tamer parabolics on my Troopy and they are excellent. Did the Border Track last week and was very pleased with the comfort both on and off road. Paired with KONI RAID 90's they are a good bit of kit. And quite a bit lighter than the OEM springs too.

Yeah I did my doors with sound deadening insulation.. best thing I ever did wil my 79.. After owning a patrol (4.2 stock) for many years and climbing into a 79 series I couldn't believe how much like a tin can it sounded like every time I opened and closed the doors, it actually drove me crazy.. Also after owning both I would have to say the Patrol was better in the running gear, cab space, leg room and general ride comfort. While I think the 79 engine is far superior (my opinion only) along with its chassis strength and ability to carry better loads due to its longer wheel base for weight distribution, better towing ability too.. As I did crack the chassis in my old patrol 🤔 I can guarantee if Patrol had a v8 diesel we would be seeing endless modification youtube clips (with added chassis strengthening) as opposed to the 79 series.. Luckily, Toyota don't have any competition.

And you paid HOW MUCH for that vehicle and you still had to insulate the doors?
@overland-workshop3 жыл бұрын
FYI. Very few cars, even expensive ones, have insulation in the doors.

I had two of the earlier model HZJ75 cruiser utes on very rough or corrugated roads the gear lever would periodically smack you in the kneecap this used to happen to my travelling companions as well if they were driving so it wasn’t just me, I could be quite painful.I don’t hear about it much these days the new cabs do seem a wee bit larger.

This gearbox is quite a bit better. And when the gearboxes wear, the lever does move around a lot!

Haha - I just bought a brand new troopy and cut the roof off of it! That was a day of nervousness :) Put on an AluCab roof top tent. A pair of air-shears just chopped off the roof, like opening a tin can with an electric can opener.
