I was actually privileged to be at this concert when she sang this. It was so mesmerizing, the entire conference center was silent. As soon as she stopped, 18,000 people were on their feet cheering and clapping. One of the most amazing nights of my life.

The whole thing, Sissel, the orchestra, and the Tabernacle Choir, were top notch talented. But there is more, something deeper, something about the music, the message, and the belief of those performing, that sent a powerful spiritual message that pierced everyone’s heart and our very soul. The people who came to that concert, came to feel something and they were not disappointed. I know that I have sought to feel the Spirit of the Lord from this song and I felt it. I could feel God’s presence, his love, that He is with me even when life is hard or I’m sad, etc. If I am still enough and seek Him in prayer, I can feel His Holy Spirit and that is what I felt when she sang that song.

I agree, it's hard not to feel it. Thanks so much for the listen!

I was there that night and sitting relatively close in a hall of 21,000. I think there was a space edited between the end of the song and the applause because we ere all so stunned by the shear beauty of what we had heard that there was a couple of seconds of silence before the applause began. I have attended concerts for over 60 years and that is the first time I ever heard such an ovation emerge from silence. Everyone knew they had witnessed perfection. Never to be forgotten. PS: my understanding is that she did the concert free of charge in exchange for the Tab Choir singing backup on a couple of Christmas songs she was recording. She sang a Christmas Concert with them in 2006 and was universally adored by many choir members from that moment on.
@randyharris40622 ай бұрын
I was there too, and there was definitely a 5 count gap at the end of the song before the applause started. I looked around and notice that everyone, including me, was just staring with our mouths gaping open in stunned reverence as we tried to process what we had just heard. I for one, had never heard of Sissel before that night and did not know what was about to happen to us. Simply the closest performance to human perfection from Sissel, the orchestra and the Choir. Just brilliant. I listen to this video many times a year, especially when I'm feeling stressed or depressed and it totally turns my mindset to God and afterwards, all "...is well with my soul." (Don't even get me started on Hugh Bonneville's performance at the Christmas Concert. I ugly cry every time I hear it!)
@jbbevan2 ай бұрын
@@randyharris4062 Yes, I think you experienced about the same feelings I did. I did know Sissel from her Christmas concert with the choir in the mid-2000's. I also knew, because my sister was in the choir then, that of all the guests they ever had most of the choir members liked Sissel the most because of her "heart" and her personality. I had never heard of her before that. But that CD of that concert was nominated for a Grammy. She is a very unusual lady. Yes, the Hugh Bonneville story "It is well with my soul" gets me every time as well. I have seldom been touched by Lord Grantham...but he got me good that time.

I'm late commenting to this because I had no idea that there were reaction videos to this song. I was there that night. It's hard to find the words, but you are correct. It was perfection. It was as if, just for a moment, everything stopped and every person there could feel heaven joining us. I just can't describe it any other way. It was a prayer that was sung. If anyone ever doubted that there was a heaven and a God, all they have to do is listen to this particular performance of this song. The doubts would be washed away. I listen to this song a lot...even 4 years later. It's truly one of those songs that heals the soul.

You aren't kidding - everything came together to create pure magic for that performance. The song and lyrics are great, but her performance and the support from the choir, orchestra, as well as the audience being transformed on the spot, turned it into a universal experience of peace and hope that speaks to every human heart and soul, religion or not.

Since the year 2000, the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square (Salt Lake City) have hosted many guest artists for their Christmas concert (broadcasted on PBS) as well as this Pioneer Concert. The venue is the 21,000 Conference Center which was designed for these types of concerts. Your comments are spot on about Sissel and the feelings felt during the concert. If you ever get a chance to visit Salt Lake City, you must check out a Thursday night practice of the Choir. The Christmas concerts are filmed over a 3-4 night period so as many can witness a performance (editors take the best performance for the broadcast).

You should react to sissel kyrkjebø - the old castle or adagio (both live from the same concert). I give your pronounciation a 3, not too bad but you kinda have to say it in a different tone. Like your tone have to go up at «bø». Its difficult for foreigners so I think you did alright. 😊 Glad you appreciate Sissels beautiful and calming voice. I also like more uptempo stuff, but she is an exception because its for chill listening sessions:) or falling asleep to.
@almost_harmless Жыл бұрын
So, kyrkje means church (though some say kirke (chirk-eh), which is more modern) and it's actually similar in how you pronounce it, though with less emphasis on the ch sounds. Bø is basically the land belonging to a farm. Tshurch-ee-buh (or boe) would perhaps be the closest to her last name for an English speaker, as some of the combinations are hard to get correct. The Norwegian y's are difficult for people not familiar with it. Her name might also be pronounced differently in different parts of Norway, just to confuse a bit more. Your reactions are always so honest and interesting. Keep ut the good work, sir.

Ky and Kj are Ssh sounds in Norwegian. So her name sounds (close to) She-shu-boo. Siss created history at Temple Square that day. There hadn't been a standing ovation mid-concert, before. This was Sissel at 50, when other singers of the classical style voice may be starting to fade. The song was composed by an American nearly 40 years ago. Siss is perfect for it as she is a believer and has sincerity on her side. I was a snob about music ( Callas, Netrebko et al) before I came across her voice. It is a balm for the soul. She's introduced Scandinavian songs to me I probably would never have heard otherwise. I feel indebted to her. She has many hotspot performances like this one throughout her 4 decades of professional singing. Eg: Her Shenandoah with Paddy Maloney & Kalle Moraeus. Many of them on KZbin.

I see your record covers on the wall. It's all prog rock. If you're into prog rock and want to react to a Norwegian rock band, I recommend Kaizers Orchestra. They sing in Norwegian but give them a chance. At least you will hear some solid interaction. They announced last week that they'll make comeback after 10 years and play shows during summer 2023. Their debut album is from 2001. I think they launced 9 albums over an 11 years period including a live record and a triology. They won fans from the vast European continent which don't even know Norwegian. They also played a gig in New York. Try out - Ompa til du dør (Dance till you die) - Maestro - Hjerteknuser (Heartbreaker) edit: Oh, I forgot! - Begravelsespolka (Funeral polka) definately also worth.
