The sour cream reacts with the acid of the baking soda to give the rise, and it does wonderfully. I had no sour cream, so added some greek yogurt I had made. I made smaller amounts in 5-oz ramekins, added chopped almonds, chocolate chips, and decor sugar on the top, then baked for 15 min in a toaster oven at 300. Perfect. The acid is a great addition! You're right about getting information from our grandparents. Once gone, it disappears. What tends to remain is recipes.

Great recipe!@ You are correct in saying you do not need any milk in your recipe. I would substitute a half of cup of butter or a healthy vegetable oil sometime instead of the sour cream.🥰 Oops, you did add the butter. How blessed you were to spend quality time with your granny.

I have made this recipe several times and it comes out perfect and moist each time. I do add 1 cup of chopped milk chocolate chunks, 1 cup chopped walnuts and I top the unbaked bread with coarse sugar which gives the finished bread a cracked top that's reminiscent of strudel topping. Beautiful and easy recipe.
