Her voice is the result of a throat operation for nodules. At first, it was kind of a shock for the musicians she was working with, but they decided to take the lemons and make lemonade. It worked well for her. Her accent is because she is from Wales.

She was also supposed to be on vocal rest after the surgery which she didn’t listen to and permanently damaged her vocal chords. I wonder if she would have had that same success if her voice was different.

@@hungfao - part of Stevie's voice going down the drain was cocaine use. Her dr. said she had to quit sniffing the coke, because the cartilage in her nose was just about ready to collapse and if she didn't stop the coke, she was going to have a hole in her nose. Vanity won out... Stevie confirmed this in an interview..

I think when she went under the knife for her throat surgery (for nodules) she probably thought her career was over. Little did she know that it would actually give her a unique voice that would actually MAKE her career. It gave her a tone that could make her sound like she was crying while she was singing, which is a skill very few singers have. All of her hits came after the surgery.

Here's the story I heard: She had a surgery to remove a polyp from her vocal cords. She was supposed to remain quiet and not speak while she was healing, but something scared her and she screamed. It actually damaged her vocal chords leaving her with that rasp. This was a top 10 hit in the 1970s and you're correct, it was a hugely popular break up song. I remember people playing this song on the jukebox and people would literally cry in their beers in the bar after they split up. It's a pretty emotional song.

There are two versions of Total Eclipse of the Heart - the real one and the Total Eclipse of the Heart Literal Video Version (which is the same tune, similar voice but the words are what is going on in the video). Maybe you should listen to the latter before the former to cheer you up - or do both in the same reaction.
