Re: Lucky/Unlucky. I got hit by a car in Japan several years ago. I was running through the crosswalk at a light as the Walk light was flashing green. Some woman in a car came up to the intersection and made the turn right (they drive on the opposite side of the street in Japan) in my direction. I had the right of way, so I kept running. As I got to the halfway mark, I realized that instead of slowing down to stop for me, she was speeding up and staring at the dashboard instead of the street. I was just about to step in front of the car and couldn't stop running in time. I slammed my hands out and caught the corner of the hood just above the headlight. The impact threw me 10 feet, and I skidded on the street, getting road rash on my right elbow, hand and knee, and sandpapering off the top of my left sneaker over the knuckle of my big toe. The impact bruised my chest muscles for 2 weeks. The main thing was that when I went flying, my left foot flew up and smashed her passenger mirror off the car, breaking one of the long bones in my foot. She was under-insured. Her insurance company paid for my taxi fare to and from work while I was in a cast, and for the hospital visits. But, at the end, all I got was 500,000 yen (a little under $5,000) for "pain and suffering." It took 3 months for the bone to heal to where I could start walking on that foot again. Asking the "lucky/unlucky" question - "Would I be willing to be shot in the arm, instead of being hit by a car? And is $5,000 worth all of the hassle and pain?" "Nope." It might be one thing for a simple flesh wound, but if the bullet shattered the bone, $5,000 wouldn't even cover rehab therapy. This isn't just "unlucky", it's potentially permanently crippling. Add a few more zeros at the end, and we can talk.

Sidenote on lucky vs unlucky: In the US, it would really hang on whether your insurance or Medicare covered your bills. Or if the bank's liability(?)/business(?) insurance covered your bills. I don't know many people that would be positive over getting shot, getting paid ~$6.8k, and then having the relevant insurance tell them to kick rocks. Like, if you get to keep the money, that's debatably a decent experience. If you get strongarmed out of that money afterwards, that's overwhelmingly negative and you got kicked while you were down.
