It's crazy how much that copy protection being broken in 2016 blew the doors open for the Saturn retro scene. Prior to that the only emulator still updating saturn support was Mednafen which doesn't come with a GUI and you have to use the command line to operate. Then the copy protection got broken and everything changed. ODE's, Flash Carts, a Mister core and new/updated emulators from people besides Mednafen (although I do believe it still has the best compatibility). It really breathed new life into a piece of hardware that felt like time had chosen to forget.

@robinmattheussen23952 ай бұрын
The Mednafen core is still the best one, though it only has a software renderer (it's pretty accurate though). The command line interface is super easy to use, that's not really the issue. More annoying is that you can't really catalog your collection or easily have a per-game config like most other emulators do (I mean you can but it's a little less convenient). There's a couple of frontends out there, but they aren't very impressive at all. I personally use the Saturn core with RetroArch, but I know there's a lot of people who can't stand RA.

MVG, just to let you know, I've been compiling one of the few compatibility lists around, and was one of the first people to actually buy and test the Saroo. I also had a problem with "Golden Axe: The Duel" and even reported it as a "incompatible", but it's actually 100% compatible with Saroo. The problem is that there's a bad dump circulating around, and it seems that (amusingly) it's the one that people are downloading the most. If you really want play that game, download different dumps, and you are good to go. Anyways, I'm glad most of people are now buying a cheaper and better alternative such as the Saroo. MKT Trilogy and SimCity 2000 on the Saroo for instance load INSANELY fast compared to the same games running via disc. I bought my first Saturn last year and was using PSK to play, but then bought the Saroo and I was able to beat all the games I wanted with it.

The solution isn’t perfect; it was a pain to set up, and some games either won’t load or won’t detect a 64 MB memory card. But that being said, roughly 95% of the games I’ve tested work either out of the box or with some tweaking. The Saroo would be a pretty good way not to waste 30 CDs on home made Cardcaptor Sakura X-VCDs, not to mention not being bogged down by 2x speed CDs and just using the Saturn's raw... Well, not bus width but a ROM speed of 20MB/s is less than half of the cartridge bus of 44 or 50. Assuming the VCD card is good enough, you can max out the 3500kbps that Mpeg-1 allows. Too bad ROM sizes aren't allowed past 700 megabytes.

A tremendous amount of programming is knowing not to reinvent the wheel. If someone else has written some code that does what you want, then you need a very good reason to write your own. This is the case from standard C libraries to entire game engines. In the case of a console's BIOS, you could potentially write a new version, but it would certainly have compatibility issues and it is far, far easier to tell people to provide their own.

I feel sorry for the guy who made the Satiator, since it's main selling point was the plug and play nature. That's the only thing that tried to justify it's price point. Thing is, even if he drops the price, the Saroo still has more features with the save games, action reply and 4mb.

I don't think it's quite THAT simple. It's a really clean, elegant solution -- and apparently, just a hair more compatible. Maybe you know the reasons better than I do, but I would assume part of its expense is in the cost of parts, the custom case, etc. For things like this, it doesn't usually seem like the developer just wants to extract as much as possible from every unit sold. Ergo, while admitting ignorance to the production cost vs. price, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that the price isn't going to drop dramatically just because something else exists.

@@Markimark151 So many people trash the $160 32X or complain that the $50 SVP LockOn cart wouldn't have been "enough" to take on the PlayStation. Incredibly, most people don't realize that nearly all of the launch titles and first year PS1 (and contemporary PC games) were drawing 5-20,000 polygons per second, well within the range of the Sega CD+SVP. In fact, both the Sega CD and SVP were also capable of adding 3,000 Gauroud textured, shaded polgyons per second each. Third party developers and SoA already had 4-6 games developed fro the LockOn when SoJ canceled the anticipated plug in. Devs could've taken existing Sega CD and Genesis titles and added arcade sound and 3D scaled backgrounds (using the Sega CD) and the SVP LockOn to add up to 20,000 flat shaded polygons per second, or make 20fps versions of most of the late 90s AAA titles. Indeed, top selling games like FF7 and Resident Evil would've worked just fine on the Sega CD+SVP. All that horsepower in the Saturn was economically useless when 90% of devs couldn't get it all working, and most would just jump ship and go for PC and PS1, which were at least easier to develop games on.

To me the Saturn is so good I use one as the brains of a dedicated shooter arcade cabinet. Compared to other options for building an arcade cabinet this is one of the most easiest routes there is. All you need is an arcade cabinet shell. A gutted cabinet can be purchased extremely cheaply. You don't need a monitor. You don't need the wiring harness or coin door. In fact your don't even need a joystick or buttons. Literally just the shell of an arcade cabinet. Install a cheap color TV. Install the Saturn. Route the gun outside the cabinet, Boom, you now have an arcade cabinet that only plays shooting games. And for the Saturn there's a sizable catalogue of some of the best shooter games there is. In the same cabinet I also have a PS1 and a Nintendo Wii. All the 3 consoles do is play shooter games on an arcade cabinet. And seeing as I don't have the complete library of Saturn shooter games, this flash cart becomes extremely attractive. Cheers for the video(s) mate. QLD Aussieville. EDIT: I'll be getting the Black Elite 64gb from the seller you've recommended. $120 AU posted to my door, as you mentioned, is a no brainer.

I use Satiator Rings and with the speed and ease of navigating multiple folders, screenshots and so on it is just awesome. I have a fairly large collection of Saturn dumps on a 512GB SD card in mine, organized with A-Z and multidisc folders. When I first saw the Saroo I was excited, but then I saw the menu system. Ugh. I mean it would be great for someone throwing a few dozen games on it I suppose, but that menu system is no good at all for a large curated collection. When the menu system meets up with the "everdrive standard" I will jump on the bandwagon, but as it stands now it just could not handle my collection. Also, I think you are spot on that they need to provide an option to slow the games down to their normal load speeds. This has to be causing at least some the various compatibility issues I have been reading about. Thanks for the review...always dig your videos!

The problem of CD media made by sega , not only with saturn but with dreamcast and sega cd is the fact they worn out by themselves, even if you keep a new one sealed in the case

It does seem awesome for the price, but I already have a MODE installed in mine, and the slowdown issue would drive me crazy. If I was on a real tight budget and didn't have a MODE though, I'd probably go for it.

Saroo is compatible with PAL Saturns. However, NTSC games doesn't magically run perfectly on PAL. You would still have to mod the Saturn for 60HZ mode.

the japanese saturn models are 100v 50/60hz so you need either a 115v to 100v step-down transformer or a 230v to 100v step-down transformer

It's very true that Saturn games are way too expensive now. I don't think I'll ever play my Sonic Jam again. I was 15 when i paid around $15-$16 for it from ebay in 2005. Now? There's no way I could justify spending $200 to replace it if something bad happened to it.
@videogameobsession5 ай бұрын
I'm not sure I'd recommend paying $60 -$100 to play the Saroo lottery. And then have only a 75% compatibility and possible bricked cart if you try to flash it to the newest FW. If you are a big fan of the Saturn you'll probably be better off with one of the other, better solutions. I suppose if you just want to play the "popular stuff" you could give it a try.
@SolidSonicTH4 ай бұрын
Actually I think it was kind of the fault of the games. I've never been able to point to a "killer app" game for the platform. NiGHTS kind of had that possibility but it never really made that kind of splash that would move consoles.

10:00 - Wait, the Action Replay makes the Saturn be able to play CDR disks? I know it makes my Saturn play Japan disks which is why I got it. But have I been able to play CDRs this whole time and not know it?
@8bitwidgetsАй бұрын
so is this effectively an ODE solution without having to open up the system? I just got a Saturn and looking to be able to play all games from a usb device. In case it matters this is going to be a Japanese Saturn (friend bought while on vacation recently for me) and Japanese light gun.. if that makes any difference. i'm big on playing virtua cop and others.. I have a 32" CRT to play it on.

Can it boot CD-Rs? My experience with the Pro Action Replay is that it will let you play games from other regions (since the BIOS normally does that check), but the CDB will not let you access the data track until it has authenticated the security ring.

“Saturn games don’t come cheap.” Well, that’s true, mostly for Western Saturn games but fortunately for Japanese games, it’s a different story. They’re not as expensive at Western ones, like they want to please weebs or something. I always thought price hikes were done in retro games because f*ck you. I always thought Saturn games being more expensive in the west was because of asshole sellers who have zero regards for you or your budget. No wonder piracy is so rampant in the retro gaming space but I’m all here for it. It’s also why I don’t buy retro games anymore, well most of the time.

$90 isn't all that cheap. It's reasonable, but it's really not cheap. I imagine the Cyclone IV accounts for most of it. If it could be simplified to run on a Raspberry Pi Pico, it'd get way cheaper.

Does its ability to boot into burnt discs mean that if a game won't run off the Saroo itself, it'll run off the burnt disc? or does it have to be compatible with the Saroo to run? Cuz if it's the former, then that's essentially 100% compatibility in a way right? I've always wanted a Satiator and I still kinda do, but if this is really that good then I'm gonna probably have to just go with the Saroo instead. I don't mind burning some discs if I have to 🤷
@chap3l5 ай бұрын
It will run your burnt discs if you Saturn is chip modded. Otherwise no.

regardless of the price of the ODEs, when you compare their prices to the price of Saturn games, you're saving a fortune lmao. I'm very intrigued by the Saroo even though i have a Satiator but the thought of bricking it does seem a bit scary... also developments on the Saturn core on mister fpga are also looking promising but again, price (though de-10 clones are starting to show up)
