Grew up in a single parent household in poverty. I stole this album from a buddy of mine and laid on the floor of my family’s living room playing it on repeat praying it will all be okay someday. Thank you Isaac, Eric and Jeremiah. Three lost kids making jams for lost kids just like themselves

KZbin comments on music like this are so special. They give you little glimpses into lives you've never lived, loves you've never felt, memories you never made but somehow you feel that connection and nostalgia. It's a weird feeling when you randomly read about the guy who once loved a girl who showed him this song and now 20 years later he cant hear this song without thinking about that time in his room she showed him this

Modest Mouse has the gosh darned tastiest guitar lines in the history of music. The perfect balance of distortion and clean riffs drives me up the wall. The sadness and happiness and nostalgia all wrapped into one gives me the shivers it's so good.

I think many can relate to this song because it's about the heartache of youth and growing up. Once a person reaches a certain age they can look back and see many regrets and missed opportunities , as well as mistakes not in their control. Maybe the song is apologizing to itself so that it can move on toward a more mellow chapter.

Of all the songs by Modest Mouse, this is the best 'acceptance' song by them to just play and listen when you know your life's been signed and sealed forever. This one makes me feel some sort of weird/sad nostalgia for moments I want to remember as much as I wish i could forget them as soon as I do. I get transported to when I was a kid and and this song has followed me for most of my adult life and I love that it allows me to time travel and go back and give myself a goddam break for not having everything figured out then. Like anybody really does.

Jason McHenry I know that feeling man, I grew up moving in and outta but spending most of my life in a town that as a whole could best be summed up as trailer trash, and this song touches base with so many experiences I've had and seen others have, it brings about a beautiful sadness in me. Especially since I have difficulty remembering many of those experiences due to heavy drug abuse during those years, I want to remember but at the same time don't, it's a crazy feeling, may not be quite the same as yours but it's amazing how music can touch base with different people like that.

its funny how only fans get the power of this song. like weve all been drawn in by the frequencies. the average ear doesnt hear it. and the average brain cant lace those connections of feeling the exact way this song makes you feel. this song makes me long for the days as a fifteen year old. at that rail none of us could skate. kickflipping the three stair instead. passing around tiny joints. feeling free.

***** It's upbeat. Catchy. And makes you feel good. Basically it appeals to the mainstream that just want songs that make them feel happy, as the majority of casual listeners use music as a form of escapism from the dreary and mundane. Don't get me wrong, Float On is a fantastic song, but it is barely on par with such masterpieces as Third Planet, King Rat, Cowboy Dan and Dramamine (and of course, Trailer Trash.) You get what I'm meaning, and this comment is pretentious enough as it is, I don't mean to sound like I think my opinion is better than the majority of music lovers, because that would just be stupid. But hey, float on, right?
@knifeforkandaspoon9 жыл бұрын
***** Because Float On received radio airplay while this did not. Float On's notoriety was also due to the sampling of the main riff in a hip hop song. Float On was also "cleaner" while this song has a rawer edge that isn't friendly to the ears of a mainstream audience.

The more time passes, the more sure I am that Modest Mouse was the absolute peak of rock as an artform. Now that we’ve culturally moved past rock bands & indie labels (for the most part) in favor of rappers and internet collectives, i can confidently say that MM was the GOAT rock band. They’re the ultimate expression of a trend that began all the way back with blues musicians and artists like Elvis, and 50 years later, we ended up with this; the perfect band, the perfect balance of everything that made guitar music worthwhile. Equal parts raw and refined, explosive spontaneity and meticulous virtuosity, quiet introspection and angry catharsis. They managed to elevate an intentionally dumb & mindless form of music to the level of high art, without compromising any of the primal energy that made it special in the first place. Their records from Crowded West to Good News and everything in between are some of the best ever made, and will likely never be topped. This is as good as it gets, folks. Let’s not take these masterpieces for granted

The very first Modest Mouse Album I ever heard was the moon and antarctica, introduced to me by a friend and I instantly fell in love with this band. Every single song on that album is incredible. Soon after that I went out and bought every single modest mouse album I could find. I love all of there music. They incorporate so many different instruments and Isaac's lyrics and voice are so unique and incredible. Fucking love this band. I told myself this is one band that I have to see play live before I die. And on August 28th 2009 that dream was fulfilled at outside lands music festival in Sanfrancisco California. I got to see Modest Mouse and Built to Spill, Who are from Boise Idaho, I am from Idaho Falls Idaho. Pearl Jam, Cage the Elephant, Q tip, Tenacious D Atmosphere so many great performances and great bands. Best experience of my life. But anyways got to check that off my bucket list. Love modest mouse.

I introduced myself by first listening to building nothing. (that album sucks in my opinion, except for life of arctic sounds, neverending math equation and other peoples lives,) and then i kept finding more and more of their better music,=.

For everyone, there is a song they consider lyrically perfect. You have those who'll choose a Bob Dylan song or a Soundgarden song or whatever. For me, it's this. Yes, the lyrics are crude at times. Yes, they repeat, a trope I usually cannot stand. But once you look past that, what do you get? Total sadness. Brock paints this excellent picture of a guy who has grown up, gotten married, had kids, and now works at a dead-end job. When he realizes what his life has become, he reflects on every important choice that he's made up to then. He finds that his marriage was pointless, what with both spouses falling out of love, leading up to a emotionally numbing divorce. After this, he begins to understand that his children don't really mean anything to him anymore, they're just a result of the life he has sadly chosen. And now, after all this time, he is stuck, living as the titular trailer trash. High school means nothing, indeed.
@TruthHurts91111118 жыл бұрын
actually... what makes Isaac the best is that he can mean whatever that individual, such as yourself, wants him to mean. he grew up in a trailer. he did a lot of his earliest writings in that trailer. just fyi...

Godofmoar actually he lived in a trailer pretty much by himself throughout high school. It's where he started writing. So the song can mean alot allot of things for alot of different reasons for alot of different people that's why I love Isaac so much.

This song reminds me of a time when my brothers were alive. We grew up in a trailer park and life was a fucking disaster. One time some guy said under a Modest Mouse song: "don't feel bad for the fact many people don't know/listen to Modest Mouse, be happy that at least they didn't have to go through something that terrible that would make them listen to Modest Mouse". Makes sense.

When Florida and Spitting Venom came across my pandora in college one night my life changed. MM has been a part of helping me overcome every tough time ive faced since. these men are a testament to the power of music.
