Unfortunately, the focus of this interview shifted from the economic topic to name calling. Karan should have spared Rathin when he clearly doesn't want to call name and got into the details of the economy. That way, the viewers could still connect the dots and the focus of the interview would still be the economic challenges it is facing.

I agree. I guess Karan was expecting headline blaring names from Rathin Roy (he being in the Economic Advisory committee of Modi before being fired). I would have given Rathin a pass. But interviews like these stretch both the interviewer and the interviewee to the hilt.

Amazing interview, a clash of two different perspectives. Rathin Roy is interested in a systemic critique and his observations are of the system as a whole, but Karan is of the opinion that the system consists of people, and the critique must extend to them as well. The fact that the system as a whole is broken doesn't take away from the fact that the current individuals in power are agents of said system and have moral culpability for their failures even if someone else in their position would fail similarly due to the inherent flaws of the Indian political system. I agree with Karan on this one, but I don't begrudge Dr. Roy from staying away from trouble.

Fantastic interview! Always a pleasure listening to Dr Roy! On a lighter note however, I believe Mr Thapar does get Dr Roy in a bit of a soup at 37:39, considering Roy's earlier statement about the root cause being administrative and technical incompetence and not the lack of political will in general.

A very bold, direct set of workable solutions for the economy. Pity that Mr Thapar doesn't let Mr. Jathin Roy complete his analysis by trying to force him to pin everything down to specific persons rather than to the governments that collectively make policy. The interview I believe was not intended to bash Modi Govt … it was to understand what’s wrong and what are the measures to revive economy… the conversations were of high quality but u were pushing it to a political discussion and wanting a renowned economist to be blaming politicians than institutions in capability

Apart from the key structural changes that Mr. Roy suggested, I believe there are two more which are equally or far more important namely Judicial reforms (incl. consistently adding capacity of our courts) and electoral reforms.These are directly tied to our social & economic prosperity and how the world, especially business community would view us.Do we want to be country where enforcing contracts is near impossible, and getting an electoral outcome is purely based on the resources available with you. I certainly dont.

Thanks for the insightful interview. While identifying people who run the system is important, (since most of us know who they are and Dr Rathin would not name them) Karan Thapar should have focused more on "system" as Dr Rathin Roy was brilliant in his analysis of system and that is something many of us would have overlooked or not known

Some may call it hardball interviewing. But approaching it with preconceived answers and browbeating the interviewee when he demurs veers very close to abject rudeness. Why bother having an interview if you insult the interviewee when he doesn't give you the answer you think he should? You might as well talk to yourself.

In a way agree but both stuck to their respective proverbial guns. I believe Karan should have been more prepared with his questions to corner Rathin having known him for so long. Karan assumed that Rathin would readily agree to his suggestions regarding what Rathin wrote in allegorical direct article but he (Karan) was as much taken aback by Rathins defence of his article and at the same time not calling out individual names. Personally, I endorse this quality (if it is applied all the time across the board). It is a rare quality to possess in today's time.

This interview is a piece of art. A gem. But unfortunately happens in an echo chamber. Dr. Roy is left-leaning, Karan is, The Wire and most of them, seeing and commenting are. It would only make more sense if anybody from the government could be subjected to such scrutiny with their words. Please invite Gadkari-ji. I believe if there is one person in this government who would be game, it probably would only be him. Plus, his department routinely reports good numbers.
