Tariffs only punishes consumers, not importers or exporters. American inflation is high enough already. Besides America does not manufacture necessary goods for its population like clothing, textiles, rugs, toys, stuffed animals, dvds, laptops, cellphones so they must be imported. American salaries and wages are also way too high to make them remotely cost effective. American labor skills and quality are also often much worse than the cheapest foreign product anyway.

If the US, a developed economy, exercises reciprocity in tariffs with India, a developing economy, then Trump must either call the US a 3rd world economy or he must call India a 1st world economy. He can't have it both ways. In any case, weakening India's economy during its recovery phase will directly empower China geopolitically. It will also push India further towards empowering BRICS at the expense of the G7. Good luck with that!
