People in Indian-controlled Kashmir are casting their ballots as the fourth phase of India's parliamentary elections begins.
Voting is being held in the region for the first time since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government stripped Kashmir of its semi-autonomous status in 2019.
Modi's Hindu nationalist BJP party isn't running any candidates in the area.
The decision to bring the Muslim-majority region under direct rule was deeply unpopular among residents - and some are choosing to boycott the vote.
Control of Kashmir is disputed between India and Pakistan, who have fought two wars over the territory. An ongoing decades-long separatist insurgency has left tens of thousands dead in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

End of Article 370 (Special Status) doesn't threaten Kashmir, it threatens end of hegemony of Punjabi Army in Pakistan. Pakistan Army directly & indirectly devours 54.7% of national resources (Stephen Cohen, 2003). Pakistan Army must keep Kashmir cause & anti-India campaign, terrorists alive for its own survival which helps it to devour huge resources (Pamela Constable). Punjabis constitute 62% population of Pakistan but Punjabis only have 26% Punjabi land. Punjabi politicians & bureaucrats also know that Punjab can not survive without devouring resources of other provinces. Kashmir cause helps in the double-devouring process. Col. Lawrence Sellin, PhD., Writer & a Veteran of Afghanistan & Iraq wars rightly observed: “Article 370 was most useful to Pakistan: It helped Pakistan spread poisonous militancy and misery in Kashmir. Pakistan used ‘special status’ of Kashmir to claim J&K was ‘disputed territory’. With one stroke, India has ended that claim. Pakistan now faces ruin itself. It has nothing to offer Kashmir."

What an approach. What kind of reporting is this. Railways reaching Kashmir, no corruption by the State Govt & people getting the direct benefits of the Central Govt schemes, no mention of that. More than crore people of all of India visiting Kashmir every year now. Local people with the tourism industry are getting the benefits of that, no mention of that. One thing one need to understand Kashmir is heavily militarized for decades but people were not visiting so long for fear and if more than a crore people of every part of India is visiting every part of Kashmir without fear that means something good has happened & the locals are happy because people are getting into normal life, schools, collages are open & very soom there will be assembly elections also. Why dont u report that. By the way among these tourists in Kashmir, my relatives from Bengal were also there & they travelled almost 60% pf the valley without any fear & received great hospitality from the locals.
