Modified 2006 Pontiac GTO - One Take

The Pontiac GTO (Holden Monaro, for those down under) is an under-appreciated car in the used market. With a 6-liter LS2 V8, 6-speed manual gearbox, independent rear suspension, and probably the best GM interior of the period, the GTO proves to be not only a comfortable and refined grand tourer, but adept at track days, drag racing, and autocross as well. This one has been modified with some choice bits that result in a well rounded, if very loud package.

i think the gto is the perfect muscle car to buy for under 20K, in a market saturated with mustangs/cameros/challengesr it definitely stands out as well as being a great car

I owned one of these, it was a fast, fast car. Pulleys, cams, valves and springs, headers, x-pipe, intake plenum (F.A.S.T.), injectors and a few choice mods like a beefed up rear end and taking out weight where I could made it an absolute beast. Stock power on a humid 95* day was 345hp at the wheels and after mods was about 450hp at the wheels on a hot humid day as well. I was going to have a single turbo installed , not a huge one but was looking for a little over 600hp. Sadly I was rear ended sitting at a stop light by a Chevy Silverado going 40mph... you can imagine how that went. It ran and drove after that actually, but the insurance company totaled the car because they are inexpensive and repairs cost too much.

+TrillMurray That does sting a little. But its probably at least half true. These cars come with a ton of power and not enough tire (8" wide with 245's in the back). If your on all season tires, those with poor judgement can kiss traction and your insurance rates good bye when you mash the throttle. I don't recommend jumping out of a Camry and into one of these without learning some throttle control.

Ha your squirrel/bird comment reminds me of a time I got four big fat doves at once in my car...going about 70 on a rural two-lane highway, I scared them out of a bush on the side of the road as I drove by (unintentionally) and they flew in front of my GTI. Dude, take the knob off, Fill it with as much silicone as you can, pop it on and let it dry before you drive it. It's the plastic retaining clips shaking in the knob. Silicone holds in place so it doesn't vibrate. That shit was driving me crazy when I got the car.

+Grajeda No, the billet shifters inherently vibrate. I have a similar (GMM ripshift) with a solid steel stick with solid steel ball. There are no clips or washers in the knob. I've swapped to a lighter alum knob and it helped a lot.

In five years, even the newest of these will be old enough for total exemption (I'm totally jealous of your 15 year rule, we have to wait 25), and from what I've read, it's fairly easy to get an American-market car under 15 years old registered in Canada. You just have to have a few minor modifications done and get it inspected.

TBustah Yeah the only reason it wasn't "suitable" for the Canadian market was because it didn't pass our safety regulations...but yeah I'm not 100% sure on what the import rules are ,but like you said I think its around 15 years. But I do know for it to be considered a classic it has to be anywhere from 20 - 25 years old but I think that depends on which city/town or Province you live in

Best screaming deal on a performance car out there. I have an '04 auto I picked up in 2010 with 52k on it from a dealership for $11.5k. It's hands down the most reliable car I've ever owned. It now has 108k on it and the only non-maintenance items I've had to replace were a throttle position sensor that wend bad and an oil pressure switch that wouldn't let me reset the oil life. I recommend this car to anyone, not just GTO/Monaro fanboys, of which I am now one of.

I used to post on the GTO forums. A lot of owners would convert their goats back to Monaros complete with Holden badging, bumpers and even stitching on the seats and dash. Holden even had their own version of the GTO called the HSV GTO which was basically a Monaro on steroids.

Not necessarily, If u have cams, intake, exhausts, no cats add about 15-20HP, long tubes. U can easily make 450-460. My ex- girlfriend had very similar mods, except she had a throttle body and a ECU reflash and it made 501 to the wheels, and boy did it sound good.

+iStu9797 Import laws are idiotic. You just cant import a car thats never been sold in my country and get it road legal. If its been sold but youre importing one from outside EU you need to pay a lot of taxes, do homologation process , change headlights if its RHD, change brake lights if its from US..... Not EU is the same thou, every country has its own laws. Spain has them written by idiots, thats all.

When these first came out many ppl were pissed at the way the design the body. The same thing happened to the 1994 Ford Mustang. However as time came and went they became more desired. I was always a fan of the Trans-Am, and would love to have this dudes car.
