Coming from a metal fabricator/welder here you are spot on with this video! Thank you , your time , knowledge,and all that goes into making a video that will help and make it faster for some one else to do.

I came across the Swag Offroad kit last year. Like you I could have made it from plate steel, but it came down to time savings, or so I thought. Ordered it the on Jan 10th this year. It got lost at the Portland, WA post office. Opened up a case with USPS and wrote Swag. Swag said they have had that problem several times before. However I had to wait 30 days before Swag would send me another one. After 30 days I asked to have it sent some other way other than USPS flat package. I have a feeling it got tossed around and the box probably fell apart. The new one arrived today, Feb 15 via FedEx. Good thing they put the USPS box into a FedEx tyvek bag, because the box inside was torn apart where the metal plates were busting thru again, but the bag held up and all parts were there. Temp today was -6 when I woke up this morning and my garage is not heated, but I managed to weld on the wings tonight in 16 degree temp. I did have some warpage on 1 wing that needed to be pounded out. Tomorrow I'll start the top portion and the drive unit. Going with the original HF axle and using the HF threader pieces. Like you I'll be putting in a shim made from a 7/8 to 3/4 crank shaft sleeve adapter that I milled open weeks ago to go on the shaft for the HF threader die. Can you tell I've been waiting to get this thing put together. Upcoming project with twelve 1.5" tubing to be connected together for 47' long, bent into half circle of 30' diameter. However, if I ever need to do square tubing like you I'll have to order Swag's keyway shaft and dies, along with their drive hub to weld on the shaft. More money $85. Its all 4130 chromoly, so a little different in welding it up that I have never done and may have to find a professional since I don't want to screw it up. I wish they would just sell the axle and drive hub already welded. One thing I noticed on the HF base, it is not perfectly perpendicular, which leads to that slop between the rollers. I ground mine down and got the sides to run parallel to each other and perpendicular to the base.

really appreciate the time you put into making this. I have a hossfeld and saw dies for 1x2 but after talking with them i'm glad i went with the roller option in my shop as well ( less kink). the tip for the wider leverage is genius. the straight out of the box attempt and then modified is what i needed to see to make my final decision for a 16 foot curved section i was gonna used a forge and sand on. guy from swag said .095 wall was fine without a pack so i'll be off and rolling here soon. thanks

I have the complete SWAG Off Road mod kit with the wings and the hydraulic jack and the electric drive. It still is a slow go on heavy wall tube but it works great. Oh and a foot pedal so I could keep better control of starts and stops.

"I thought it was cast, but I did a spark test on it apparently something you can weld to" sounds like me! Good video with factual information.

Cool vid. I converted mine to a hydraulic motor and the swag axle. The key keeps shifting and imho junk. Have to modify or remake a shaft.

The guys at swag should make a kit to build the entire roller.
@WildmanTech2 жыл бұрын
They make one. It's $900 without the power drive and dies are $190 per set.

wanting to do a tube roll of similar radius for arches to grow plants. wondering how many passes and how long it took to complete each segment with the added power? Thanks And yes just watching you manually roll one mad me tired.
@WildmanTech2 жыл бұрын
I ended up rolling four more tubes and it took less than two hours for all of them. I didn't count the passes.

Do you think you could have done without wing extensions and just the motor addition?
@WildmanTech2 жыл бұрын
It might have worked, but the guys at Swag said the first thing to fail would be that screw on the top. I'm not thrilled by the additional amount of waste on the ends, but the labor savings is totally worth it!

When you do this mod, you lose the original roller holes. The new ones are either 15", or 21" apart.

Is it possible to use an inexpensive $75 winch motor from harbor freight instead of the electric pipe threader? I believe it should have the torque and power
@WildmanTech Жыл бұрын
There are lots of different power sources you could use. The trick will be interfacing to the drive wheel. All the parts to interface to the pipe threader are readily available.

What was the wall thickness you were bending?

What gauge was the steel section box?
@WildmanTech Жыл бұрын
The rectangle tube I was rolling? 0.065" wall. Roughly 16 gauge. If you're talking about the wing and riser kit, that's all 1/4" plate.

@WildmanTech11 ай бұрын
It's going to have a pretty large radius, but yes.
@todds595611 ай бұрын
@@WildmanTech how tight of radius do you think for say a 75 degree? Thanks
@WildmanTech11 ай бұрын
@@todds5956 This isn't the right tool for a tight radius. With 1-5/8" tubing it will be like 6' or more. This is what you need... amzn.to/47mz9Uq

Damm. I don't have the stocked workshop or know-how to do all of this. I'm going to have to pay a fabricator to bend square tubes to spec.
