hi there is another reason why the battery should not be charged with a load connected because the tp4056 charger stops charging when the current reaches 10% of the set value eg 13ma when it is set for 130ma if the current does not reduce to that level it will be constantly be float charging at 4.2v

Yes, that is what I came here to say. To safely charge while running the lights, you can add a diode, a P-Channel mosfet and a resistor. Search for "tp4056 load sharing" to get the circuit. Note that the lights will be dimmer while charging, and power supply must be powerful enough to handle both loads at the same time.

Ahhhh. The Bob Ross of DIY electronics. Great video and well timed. My wife recently purchased a bunch of these to put on our mantle. Thanks!!!

Yes, I liked where those happy little resistors were placed, and the happy little mistake with the positioning of the switch.😏🇬🇧

Nice tip on changing the TP4056 charging current. Thanks

We used to have a lot of independent micro breweries in SYD back in the 80s, but the big beer companies bought them out and closed them down to kill the competition. They came back with a vengeance recently so that we now have a beer mile where you can go from brewery to brewery on a pub crawl - lol -. One is called Hawkes brewery after our prime minister that held the record for chugging a yard glass - lol -.

That is a very Australian sounding record!

Great idea for repurposed vape batteries, I will be modifying my lights very soon.

I prefer the one with the 2 AA batteries and the 8-16 hour timer.

I wonder what the current would have been and the longevity if it was powered by just one 2032, the LRD's may have been clamping the voltage a bit when 2 batteries are being used Looks like the spring may be long enough to do that.

I used an 18650 holder, protection circuit, and a resistor to set the current. It runs days between charges. Use them all year long on the mantle etc, good night lights. I don’t have to take down the string of lights to charge the cell, just swap a cell and recharge at my convenience. This way, I keep a series of 2 dozen cells in constant rotation. If there is a power failure, I have recently charged cells to use in flashlights. The cells all came from discarded laptop batteries and still have over 2000 mAh capacity. Usually bad laptop packs have only a few failing cells, the test have plenty of life left. Also, burned out TP4056 modules may still have good protection circuits.

Replying to @pault6533: Your light string runs 6000 days between charges

Nice simple video, about the level of complexity I can manage 😂. Does the charge controller provide any protection from overdischarge? I think no? 🤔
@stephendredge6077Күн бұрын
The forward voltage of white LEDs is about 3 volts, so they will go out and stop drawing current when the voltage drops below 3 volts. No separate overdischarge protection required

The main chip controls the charge and the DW01 protects agasint both over and undervoltage cdn.sparkfun.com/assets/learn_tutorials/2/5/1/DW01-P_DataSheet_V10.pdf
I showed that Ohm's law chart to some guys a while ago and got chewed out! They said it wasn't Ohm's law because it included watts (P)! Too bad for them. I still like it.

Yeah, it's ohm's law plus other useful (and closely related) information. I can't imagine the pedantry needed to actually complain about it...

hmm, but now you need to switch it on to charge it 🤔(edit : i will never learn to watch the video to the end before commenting )
