Modifying a Numark PT01 to hifi quality. When you own a cheap turntable you often hear the warning "Don't ruin your expensive vinyl on that thing!". Why does it ruin your vinyl? What can you do about it? In this video you see a modified Numark PT01 safely playing expensive records ;)

Just stumbled across this video. I've been improving my Crosley. Before anyone comments, they don't chew records! I have a Philips hifi with the SAME BSR turntable mechanism and tonearm/cartridge and I still own the vinyl and it's not chewed despite being played for 40 yrs! The bit that chews your record is the cheapo needle that is often shipped with the unit - I've replaced that with proper diamond one, upgraded the ceramic cartridge, added counterweight, upgraded speakers, added high impedence pre-amp for the ceramic cartridge (omitted from most cheap turntables which makes them sound flat), new main amp etc. Anyway, my Crosley sounds good for a portable record player but I would like to try a magnetic cartridge on it to see if I can get it even better. Obviously the pre-amp will need swapping with a pre-amp suitable for the MM cartridge. Just waiting on the bits to arrive before I try and retrofit an audiotechnica magnetic cartridge to it. Wish I had a 3D printer ;) You could sell those brackets on ebay - would make a fortune ;)

It's not the ceramic cartridge that wears out quickly, it's the sapphire stylus it comes with, which only lasts about 1/10th as long as a diamond stylus. Upgrading it with a diamond stylus will solve that problem. The tonearm of these Numark and ION players has anti-skating and tracks at 5 grams, which is the recommended weight for the cartridge they use, and below the 6 grams of tracking force that vinyl records were originally designed for. The spring is part of the design of the tonearm and allows it to play a record at any angle, even upside-down! (See my video "Amazing gravity-defying turntable" for proof of that.) Overall these are not bad record players and in normal use they will not damage your vinyl!
@XjunkieNL
@XjunkieNL 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Agree with you a 100%. A sapphire stylus will not damage vinyl. Only maybe when completely worn. Most probably the high tracking force will not have too much effect. Although on my unit it was above the 6 grams you mention. My main goal was to improve the sound quality. I wanted to have at least a moving magnet cartridge. Instead of changing the sapphire stylus to a diamond version. I love this little turntable. And it's fun to use. Cheers. /Paul

About playing upsidedown, that s great, probably the only record player that does it, unfortunately I have two and none can do that, they r the first models, the USB ones, why u think this is so? Could that be fixed?

R we sure it s a spring or a magnet? Apparently springs r for the tracking force. By the way congrats 4 ur excellent video. Is there any way to get the ones with that brand? No sure right know the latest Numark does that too
@vwestlife
@vwestlife 2 жыл бұрын
@@dealingwiththedarkestsideo5392 The PT01 uses both a counterweight and a spring. The counterweight balances the tonearm and the spring applies the tracking force. If the spring has gotten detached or is missing entirely, it will still play in the normal position, but will no longer be able to play records at any angle or upside-down.

I had that Numark PT101 and used it to rip and upload my needle drop videos ten years ago. I don't miss it; always thought it sounded dull with the included stylus. I never measured the tracking weight, but always felt it tracked very heavily. But I did like the pitch control so I could sync it up with a CD to get the exact rpm. - Red

@XjunkieNL 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for stopping by, Red. Tracking force, especially with the standard attached spring, is crazy. I had to add a lot of weigh at the back of the arm to get somewhere in the ballpark. What a great idea to use a digital track to set the correct speed. Gonna try that. Cheers. /Paul

When it comes to anything audio you are brilliant Paul. Now did learn most of this tweaking/modifying or upgrading stuff by researching it online? Your knowledge in electronics is very sharp. I dig how you even changed the speaker. Wow, 200 spins with that lithium battery? Jeez, it really does sound a lot fuller and also a bit punchier. I did not even know that the portable Numark's came with a pitch control. Funny, I was just going to ask you if you thought that the $100 was money well spent figuring the turntable cost was similar. But you answered my question before I could type it in. {smile} My theory is this: No amount of money is too much if it is bringing you true happiness. Thanks for sharing this one Paul. I thoroughly enjoyed it~ Rob/Boston

Hi Rob. Always enjoy reading your comment. This upgrade is a mix of what I have seen others doing and my own ideas. Most make a little portable scratch table. I think I'm one of the first modifying it to fit a cheap hifi cartridge. Half the fun is thinking and fiddling about. It was the first time I could play with a 3D printer. This made the job must easier. Money wise I spent a little more as intented. All the best. /Paul

Finally found such a video - I searched for a few days if anyone did that, such needed modification for these portable record players (and I'm talking especially about all the Crosley's and their like) I think it's very good you recommend to make that upgrade. I think it is disgraceful to see all these trashy new record players use the ceramic cartridges - I think, especially if it's done in mass production, including magnetic cartridge and adequate MM pre-amp won't increase the price of one unit that much - it's all about greed. I'm sure if people will know the benefits of preferring MM cartridge many if not most of them will pay a few more $$ for that setup! Well done @X junkie NL !!!

Hi! I agree. The minimum on these turntables should be a conical MM cartridge. It will give so much more joy to the owner playing vinyl. I found what you just said as profoundly HARLIROUS! Why? Because I took a screen shot of your video and looked more closely at what was missing like a finding Waldo puzzle🤣😂. 2nd I took a closer look and worked out the ohm, and I hat each capacitor did. Thus coming up with the removal of one leg on each, then flipping the board over, joining the capacitors as one and then running a ground wire that a soldered in, gave me that pure, high quality & clarity I was seeking! Secondly, I placed a small retrofitted slither of Dr Suzuki plastic film over the four felt padded supports so when I place a slip at on before the album it reduced the amount of torque required to spin the album thus impacting tracking requirements getting a more closely attuned “pitch & key” result in sound quality. Thanks for providing me a small key to unlock the other ideas I was contemplating with a formula for solving those equations. Taking something that is cost efficient and turning it into an item that provides quality is a life’s quest. Peace and blessings!

@@XjunkieNL YES!!! Okay 2nd part, I was noticing how you performed your battery installation. Did you select to also connect the battery to capacitor on the boards? It's the black three pronged power cap that sits on the same board with the input for power supply. It appears that you ran spliced cables and adapter to the battery pads. Just wondering if you added some other alterations there.

Interesting, I've never heared of Visaton before. Don't forget to select an amp with a RIAA filter built in. A cheap 20 euros Behringer PP400 (35dB gain) or one of many rebadge duplicates will do fine in most situations as a compact internal Phono preamp.

As you already picked up on the Dutch accent, on Conrad.nl the Visaton speakers are available in many different specs. Great replacements. It's funny you mention the RIAA filter.
@XjunkieNL
@XjunkieNL 5 жыл бұрын

Dankjewel ,Marc
@XjunkieNL
@XjunkieNL 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Marc. Fijne feestdagen. /Paul

I just posted the following in some forum related: Hello to all of you! I read all your comments related to the buzzing noise of the portable turntable Numark PT 01 USB. It seems that you give some suggestions and ideas but none of you apparently found a real solution, a real fix, and the real cause of the problem, 1 or did you? In a nutshell, 2 is there any real valid solution to get rid of the noise once and for all that is heard when the platter spins? (especially when using headphones) 3 Is "your" noise caused by the spinning platter or not? In my case it is, there s no noise is the platter doesn t spin. 4 So are we talking about the same noise? the noise that is heard when the platter spins? It seems that one of you got rid of the buzzing noise temporarily, but then it came back, and then suggested to remove a kind of a white square piece apparently related to the USB feature. 5 Does that completely fix the problem? 6 If not what does? 7 Did any of you find the real cause of the noise? 8 Did any of you completely removed the noise once and for all? There are many videos on youtube related to this turntable but as far as i know no one mentions this buzzing problem. This is the only forum and info related i found on the net. 9 Are there any more? I also asked everyone (Numark pt 01 related videos) on youtube regarding this noise, and apparently nobody has ever had any buzzing noise, because they either completely ignore my question and comments, or are asking me questions like " What kind of noise? " etc which makes me think they have no idea what i m talking about because they actually never had this noise. Some youtubers play records using this Numark PT 02 USB, and there is no noise whatsoever, none at all. 10 So what's wrong with our models? 11 Are they defective? I bought THREE Numark PT 01 USB from three different sellers, THREE, and ALL OF THEM have the same annoying noise that makes it especially annoying when playing some kind of classical music etc. 12 I´d like to mention another problem if i may, related to this Numark PT 01 USB model: The speed: It's uneven, and this speed problem is, as a matter of fact, something many owners complain about. 13 Do you have the same speed problem too? 14 If so how did you fix it? ( i'm not talking about changing belts, but using a new one and still have the same problem) Some technician fixed the speed problem in both of them, and when using a stroboscope, both 33 and 45 were ok. I didn t ask him to adjust 78 tho The problem is, the speed was uneven two days after, without using them during those two days, in both turntables. 15 How on earth is it possible that this turntable has uneven speed and buzzing noises and yet being satisfactory used by so many people who even invest almost 500 bucks in modifications, like pro arm forces, to be able to use pro stylus and cartridges)? 16 I mean who would even bother investing any money with a turntable that has a buzzing noise and an uneven speed in the first place? Expensive tonearms would not fix that as far as I know. 17 Who would do that investment having this annoying buzzing noise and uneven speed in the first place, and not even mentioning it anywhere ? 18 this buzzing sound appears to be only in the USB model and not in the scratching model? "The third model" , the one who has a built in battery has a buzzing noise too according to some youtuber who actually is very happy with the one we are talking about here, because his has no buzzing noise, but complains about the one he bought brand new with the built in battery because it does have a noise. These turntables are extremely affordable, 19 maybe that's why they have so many issues? 20 or it s just that we had bad luck and have defective ones? 21 If all of them had the same issues, why on earth people would talk so highly of them and invest money to replace force arms etc? 22 May i mention another turntable, the OMNI, who already has a pro arm force, and is more expensive. 23 Do any of you have one? And if so, 24 could you tell me if it also has the aforementioned problems? Which are: A) Uneven speed B) Noise when the platter spins C) "Ground noise" regardless if the platter spins or not 25 May I mention the Vestax Handytrax? I have two. One of them, the first model, has a noise as well, but not related to the spinning platter. The noise in this one seems to be "a ground noise" which increases when touching the surface of the turntable. It also has an uneven speed. And the other one, a white one who is a slight different new version, has no noise whatsoever, but an uneven speed too. 26 Who would be ok purchasing and using a turntable that doesn t even offer the very minimum requirements? Minimum requirements meaning playing a record with the right speed, even speed, without the extra annoying noises, and without damaging the grooves. I would be more than glad to pay more money for a light portable turntable with exchangeable light batteries, that would not damage the grooves and needle with excessive weight, and would spin at the right speed, even speed, and without annoying noises of any kind. Both the Vestax and the Numark are too heavy when using batteries because they require a lot of batteries that are not rechargeable, too heavy, and not environmentally friendly, unless there is another option, 27 is there? 28 Am i asking for too much? am i being irrational? The OMNI seems to have all basic requirements according to the informative emails I received from them (HeadacheSound brand) but after all the stress and wasted money and time invested in the aforementioned ones, I have my doubts the OMNI will fit the, again, basic requirements, so I have my doubts. I hope some of you will kindly provide the theoretically simple and practical solution, a real one, in order to get rid of the buzzing noise once and for all. Thank you very much. Feel free to contact me here too: veganroommates9@gmail.com

Hi! Great video. I have the same turntable, the non-usb one and I wanted to do this modification myself but when I look at the preamp that they sell now, they say that is not compatible with the non usb version. Do you have the instructions of the one you bought or a link to it? It will help me a lot. I might be able to adapt the new ones that they sell but I would need to compare.

Hi Frank. Sorry for my late response. I had to check what preamp I used. As I remember now, I did use a preamp version for the USB version from Bihari. You can't use the connectors and need to do a small modification to the PT01. It works, only the volume control range is compressed. You can only use the volume control from 6 to 12 o'clock. Hope this helps a little. Cheers. /Paul

if you open the turntable right next to the pitch control there is one blue knob that you turn to correct the speed, at least it was like that on the numark pt01 scratch.

Would it be possible for me to add the lithium battery to my Crosley-like record player that doesn't have a battery at all? If so, how would I do that?
@XjunkieNL
@XjunkieNL 5 жыл бұрын
Most probably, yes. It depends on the voltage the unit is running on. If it is converted to something like 9 Vdc. It's all about finding that spot in the circuitry and connecting the battery. Maybe with a voltage regulator in between. Being the first doing the modification is always tricky, as it can go wrong and warranty is out of the window. Good luck. Cheers. /Paul

Question; How do you install a battery? I looked up the battery, and I don't understand how you connect the battery to the record player. The only thing I can think of is sticking it inside the record player, cutting a hole in the back where the battery can stick out just enough for me to toggle the ON/OFF switch and plug in the charging cord, then, when the battery is done charging, plug in the power cord it comes with into the battery, and the other end into the record player, taking the power from the battery into the record player. I'm sure the way I came up with would work, but how did you do it?

The DC In spot in the back says 5V.
@XjunkieNL
@XjunkieNL 5 жыл бұрын
Good question. It's something I didn't think about for your turntable. As my unit is already ready for battery power, there is inside space for 6 big batteries. It is exactly at this space the lithium battery is placed. Through the battery door latch I also access the on/off switch. You have to do it the way you suggest. Or make somewhere an access hole to reach the switch. You will need to use the switch, and cannot leave it switched on all the time, as it will loose it power. Do you think you can fit the complete battery inside? /Paul
@XjunkieNL
@XjunkieNL 5 жыл бұрын
So you probably only need a 6 Vdc lithium battery. And use 5 Vdc voltage regulator or connect directly a 5 Vdc lithium battery. /Paul
